Abstract
Efficient oil-water separation has always been a research hotspot in the field of environmental studies. Employing a one-step hydrothermal approach, NiFe-layered double hydroxides (LDH) nanosheets were synthesized on nickel foam substrates. The resulting NiFe-LDH/NF membrane exhibited rejection rates exceeding 99% across six diverse oil-water mixtures, concurrently demonstrating a remarkable ultra-high flux of 1.4 × 106 L·m-2·h-1. This flux value significantly surpasses those documented in existing literature, maintaining stable performance over 1000 manual filtration cycles. These breakthroughs stem from the synergistic interplay among the three-dimensional channels of the nickel foam, the nanosheets, and the hydration layer. By leveraging the pore size of the foam to enhance the functionality of the hydration layer, the conventional trade-off between permeability and selectivity was transformed into a balanced force relationship between the hydration layer and the oil phase. The operational and failure mechanisms of the hydration layer were examined using the prepared NiFe-LDH/NF membrane, validating the correlation between oil phase viscosity and density with hydration layer rupture. Additionally, an extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory was employed to investigate changes in interaction energy, further reinforcing the study's findings. This research contributes novel insights and assistance to the comprehension and application of hydration layers in other membrane studies dedicated to oil-water separation.

Abstract
Oil spills and oily effluents from industry and daily life pose a great threat to all organisms in the ecosystem, while aggravating the problem of water scarcity, which has developed into a global challenge. Therefore, the development of advanced materials and technologies for oil/water separation has become a focus of attention. One-dimensional (1D) SiO2 nanofibers (SNFs) have become one of the most widely used inorganic nanomaterials in the past due to their stable chemical properties, excellent biocompatibility, and high temperature resistance etc. Meanwhile, electrospinning technique, as an emerging technology for treating oil/water emulsions, electrospun SNFs on this basis also has a number of advantages such as adjustable wettability, diverse structure and good connectivity. This review provides a systematic overview of the research progress of electrospun SNFs in different aspects. In this review, we first introduce the basic principles of electrospun SNFs, then focus on the design structures of various SNFs, propose corresponding strategies for the property improvement of SNFs, also analyze and consider the applications of SNFs. Finally, the challenges faced by electrospun SNFs in the field of oil/water separation are analyzed, and the future directions of electrospun SNFs are summarized and prospected.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline materials assembled from organic ligands and metallic secondary building blocks. Their special structural composition gives them the advantages of high porosity, high specific surface area, adjustable pore size, and good stability. MOF membranes and MOF-based mixed-matrix membranes prepared from MOF crystals have ultra-high porosity, uniform pore size, excellent adsorption properties, high selectivity, and high throughput, which contribute to their being widely used in separation fields. This review summarizes the synthesis methods of MOF membranes, including in situ growth, secondary growth, and electrochemical methods. Mixed-matrix membranes composed of Zeolite Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIF), University of Oslo (UIO), and Materials of Institute Lavoisier (MIL) frameworks are introduced. In addition, the main applications of MOF membranes in lithium-sulfur battery separators, wastewater purification, seawater desalination, and gas separation are reviewed. Finally, we review the development prospects of MOF membranes for the large-scale application of MOF membranes in factories.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold great potentials for addressing the challenge of highly efficient oil-water separation, but they are restricted by the poor wettability and processability as crystalline membranes. Here we report the design and synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) robust COFs with controllable hydrophobicity and processability, allowing the COF layers to be directly grown on the support surfaces. Three 2D COFs with AA or ABC stacking are prepared by condensation of triamines with fluorine and/or isopropyl groups and perfluorodialdehyde. They all show excellent tolerance to water, acid, and base, with water contact angles (CA) of 111.5-145.8°. The two COFs with isopropyl and fluorine mixtures can grow as a coating on a stainless-steel net (SSN) substrate, whereas the one with only fluorine substituents cannot. The superhydrophobic COF@SSN coating with water CA of up to 150.1° displays high water-resistance and self-cleaning properties, enabling high oil-water separation performances with an efficiency of over 99.5 % and a permeation flux of 2.84×105 L m-2 h-1 , which are among the highest values reported for state-of-the-art membranes.

Abstract
A novel continuous fluid circulation system was designed and employed for the impregnation seeding and fabrication of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) crystals on the internal surface of polymeric hollow fibre membranes. Application of impregnation seeding has been proven effective to decrease crystal size, consequently increasing surface roughness and wettability of the membrane. Evaluation of the as-synthesised membrane demonstrated excellent separation efficiencies (>99%) of surfactant stabilised oil-in-water emulsions. Owing to the simple impregnation strategy assisted by the continuous fluid circulation, the active ZIF layer formed was visibly thinner and denser than typical seeding techniques, hence a high pure water flux of >1150 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 was achieved. The membranes were highly selective and ultra-permeable to water, however, almost impermeable to oils in a water environment, e.g., n-hexane, n-heptane, chloroform and dichloromethane, as well as their emulsion mixtures, with a separation efficiency higher than 99%. Besides, this new continuous fluid circulation method was also found promising for the synthesis of other types of ZIF on hollow fibre membranes.
