Adsorption of Ce3+ and Nd3+ by diglycolic acid functionalised electrospun polystyrene nanofiber from aqueous solution

Efficient Capture and Release of the Rare-Earth Element Neodymium in Aqueous Solution by Recyclable Covalent Organic Frameworks

Rare-earth elements (REEs) are present in a broad range of critical materials. The development of solid adsorbents for REE capture could enable the cost-effective recycling of REE-containing magnets and electronics. In this context, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising candidates for REE adsorption due to their exceptionally high surface area. Despite having attractive physical properties, COFs are heavily underutilized for REE capture applications due to their limited lifecycle in aqueous acidic environments, as well as synthetic challenges associated with the incorporation of ligands suitable for REE capture. Here, we show how the Ugi multicomponent reaction can be leveraged to postsynthetically modify imine-based COFs for the introduction of a diglycolic acid (DGA) moiety, an efficient scaffold for REE capture. The adsorption capacity of the DGA-functionalized COF was found to be more than 40 times higher than that of the pristine imine COF precursor and more than four times higher than that of the next-best reported DGA-functionalized solid support. This rationally designed COF has appealing characteristics of high adsorption capacity, fast and efficient capture and release of the REE ions, and reliable recyclability, making it one of the most promising adsorbents for solid-liquid REE ion extractions reported to date.

Mussel-Inspired Nanocellulose Coating for Selective Neodymium Recovery

Neodymium (Nd) is one of the most in-demand rare earth elements (REEs) for developing the next generation of magnetic medical devices and clean energy. Eco-friendly and sustainable nanotechnology for REE recovery may be highly suitable to address the limited global supply while minimizing the environmental footprints of current practice, such as solvent extraction. Here, we present a novel one-step mussel-inspired nanocellulose coating (MINC) using bifunctional hairy cellulose nanocrystals (BHCNC), bearing dialdehyde and dicarboxylate groups. The dialdehyde groups enable dopamine-mediated orthogonal conjugation of BHCNC to substrates, such as microparticles, while the high content of dicarboxylate groups yields high-capacity and selective Nd removal against ferric, calcium, and sodium ions. To the best of our knowledge, the MINC-treated substrate provides the most rapid selective removal and recovery of Nd ions even at low Nd concentrations with a capacity that is among the highest reported values. We envision that the MINC will provide new opportunities in developing next-generation bio-based materials and interfaces for the sustainable recovery of REEs and other precious elements.

Cerium biosorption onto alginate/vermiculite-based particles functionalized with ionic imprinting: Kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamic, and reuse studies

Cerium is an essential element for several applications in industry, therefore, recovering it from secondary sources is a promising strategy from an economic and environmental perspective. For this purpose, biosorption is a low-cost and effective alternative. The present work evaluated the recovery of Ce³⁺ from aqueous solutions using alginate/vermiculite-based particles (ALEV) functionalized by ionic imprinting. From the kinetic assays, it was verified that the uptake of Ce³⁺ followed the pseudo-second-order model and was mainly controlled by external diffusion. The Langmuir model better described the equilibrium data, and a maximum biosorption capacity of 0.671 mmol/g at 45 °C was attained. The evaluation of the thermodynamic quantities revealed that the process occurs spontaneously and endothermically. The particles reuse and Ce³⁺ recovery were achieved using 0.1 mol/L HCl or 1.0 mol/L CaCl₂ solutions for up to four cycles of biosorption/desorption. The biosorbent was characterized before and posted Ce³⁺ biosorption to investigate the morphology, textural properties, crystallinity, thermal resistance, composition, and functional groups of the biosorbent.

Green Preparation of Aminated Magnetic PMMA Microspheres via EB Irradiation and Its Highly Efficient Uptake of Ce(III)

The modification of polymers can significantly improve the ability to remove rare earth ions from wastewater, but so far few studies have focused on the irradiation-induced grafting method. In this study, a novel magnetic chelating resin for Ce(III) uptake was first synthesized by suspension polymerization of PMMA@Fe₃O₄ microspheres followed by irradiation-induced grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and subsequent amination with polyethyleneimine (PEI). The FT-IR, SEM, TG and XRD characterization confirmed that we had successfully fabricated magnetic PMMA-PGMA-PEI microspheres with a well-defined structure and good thermal stability. The obtained adsorbent exhibited a satisfactory uptake capacity of 189.81 mg/g for Ce(III) at 318.15 K and an initial pH = 6.0. Additionally, the impact of the absorbed dose and GMA monomer concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and initial concentration were thoroughly examined. The pseudo-second order and Langmuir models were able to describe the kinetics and isotherms of the adsorption process well. In addition, the thermodynamic data indicated that the uptake process was spontaneous and endothermic. Altogether, this research enriched the Ce(III) trapping agent and provided a new method for the removal rare earth pollutants.

Separation of Rare-Earth Ions from Mine Wastewater Using B12S Nanoflakes as a Capacitive Deionization Electrode Material

In this study, nanoflakes of B₁₂S were fabricated by plasma-assisted reaction of sulfur dichloride in an ionic liquid at room temperature using europium boride as a hard template. The nanoflakes had an average width and thickness of about 3 ₁urn and 9.6 nm, respectively, and a large specific surface area of 1197.2 m² g ¹. They behaved like typical electric double-layer capacitors with a capacitance of 201.2 F g ¹ at 0.2 mA cm ² During capacitive deionization to recover rare-earth ions, the nanoflakes had higher adsorption selectivity for Sm³⁺ than for other competing ions present in real mine waste water. This is due to the strong interaction of the electron-concentered S-groups (S''') of the nanoflakes with S m³⁺. This provides an alternative to construct efficient systems to specifically remove Sm³⁺ from aqueous solution using B₁₂S nanoflakes. This process demonstrates that other boron sulfide compounds can be used to recover valuable ions by capacitive deionization.

Phosphate Polymer Nanogel for Selective and Efficient Rare Earth Element Recovery

Demand for rare earth elements (REEs) is increasing, and REE production from ores is energy-intensive. Recovering REEs from waste streams can provide a more sustainable approach to help meet REE demand but requires materials with high selectivity and capacity for REEs due to the low concentration of REEs and high competing ion concentrations. Here, we developed a phosphate polymer nanogel (PPN) to selectively recover REEs from low REE content waste streams, including leached fly ash. A high phosphorus content (16.2 wt % P as phosphate groups) in the PPN provides an abundance of coordination sites for REE binding. In model solutions, the distribution coefficient (K_d) for all REEs ranged from 1.3 × 10⁵ to 3.1 × 10⁵ mL g^-1 at pH = 7, and the sorption capacity (q_m) for Nd, Gd, and Ho were ∼300 mg g^-1. The PPN was selective toward REEs, outcompeting cations (Ca, Mg, Fe, Al) at up to 1000-fold excess concentration. The PPN had a K_d of ∼10⁵-10⁶ mL g^-1 for lanthanides in coal fly ash leachate (pH = 5), orders of magnitude higher than the K_d of major competing ions (∼10³-10⁴ mL g^-1). REEs were recovered from the PPN using 3.5% HNO₃, and the material remained effective over three sorption-elution cycles. The high REE capacity and selectivity and good durability in a real waste stream matrix suggest its potential to recover REEs from a broad range of secondary REE stocks.

The Behaviour of Rare Earth Elements from South African Coal Fly Ash during Enrichment Processes: Wet, Magnetic Separation and Zeolitisation

Rare earth elements (REEs) are essential raw materials in a variety of industries including clean energy technologies such as electric vehicles and wind turbines. This places an ever-increasing demand on global rare earth element production. Coal fly ash (CFA) possesses appreciable levels of REEs. CFA, a waste by-product of coal combustion, is therefore a readily available source of REEs that does not require mining. CFA valorisation to zeolites has been achieved via various synthesis pathways. This study aimed to evaluate one such pathway by monitoring how REEs partition during CFA processing by the wet, magnetic separation process and zeolitisation. South African CFA was subjected to wet, magnetic separation and subsequent zeolitisation of the nonmagnetic fraction (NMF); solid products were characterised by XRD, SEM, XRF and LA-ICP-MS. The wet, magnetic separation process resulted in the partitioning of a specific set of transition metals (such as Fe, Mn, Cr, V, Ni, Zn, Cu, Co and Mo) into the magnetic fraction (MF) of CFA, while REEs partitioned into the NMF with a total REE content of 530.2 ppm; thus, the matrix elements of CFA were extracted with ease. Zeolitisation resulted in a solid zeolite product (hydroxysodalite) with a total REE content of 537.6 ppm. The process of zeolitisation also resulted in the selective enrichment of Ce (259.1 ppm) into the solid zeolite product (hydroxysodalite), while other REEs were largely partitioned into the liquid phase. CFA valorisation by wet, magnetic separation and zeolitisation therefore allowed for the partitioning of REEs into various extraction products while recovering the matrix elements of CFA such as Fe, Si and Al. The findings of this study highlight the geopolitical importance of REEs in terms of the development of alternative processes for REE recovery from waste and alternative sources, which may potentially give countries that employ and develop the technology a key advantage in the production of REEs for the global market.

Interactions Between Hydrated Cerium(III) Cations and Carboxylates in an Aqueous Solution: Anomalously Strong Complex Formation with Diglycolate, Suggesting a Chelate Effect

Interactions between hydrated Ce3+ and various carboxylates are of fundamental interest. Anomalously strong interactions with Ce3+ occur when diglycolic acid (DGA) is added into a Ce3+ aqueous solution, unlike various other carboxylic acids. Herein, the complex-formation constants of Ce3+ with these acids are evaluated via absorption and emission spectra. Hydrated Ce3+ emits fluorescence with unity quantum yield; however, addition of various carboxylates statically quenches the fluorescence when Ce3+-carboxylate complexes form because the fluorescence lifetime is constant irrespective of the carboxylate concentration. In the observed static quenching, the complex-formation constants obtained from the absorption and emission spectra (K abs and K em) agree well. The binding of Ce3+ by the conjugate Lewis bases, i.e., carboxylates, is approximately inversely proportional to the pH. Adding DGA into the system also statically quenches the fluorescence, but far more efficiently, even in a much weaker solution. We rigorously deduce K abs and K em of Ce3+ with DGA without any approximation using comparable concentrations. Careful fittings provide equivalent K em and K abs values, and by varying the pH and ionic strength, we confirm that this equivalence is an inherent property of the Ce3+-DGA system. The Lewis acid-base theory cannot explain why DGA binds to Ce3+ ∼1000 times more strongly than the other carboxylates. This anomalously strong binding may be due to a chelate effect caused by the DGA's central oxygen atom, which forms a five-membered ring with the conjugate Lewis bases of DGA; double chelate rings can also form, while bis-deprotonated DGA binds to Ce3+, facilitated by the central oxygen. Therefore, DGA enables efficient quenching through the chelate effect when it binds to Ce3+.
