Emerging Advances in Microfluidic Hydrogel Droplets for Tissue Engineering and STEM Cell Mechanobiology

Hydrogel droplets are biodegradable and biocompatible materials with promising applications in tissue engineering, cell encapsulation, and clinical treatments. They represent a well-controlled microstructure to bridge the spatial divide between two-dimensional cell cultures and three-dimensional tissues, toward the recreation of entire organs. The applications of hydrogel droplets in regenerative medicine require a thorough understanding of microfluidic techniques, the biocompatibility of hydrogel materials, and droplet production and manipulation mechanisms. Although hydrogel droplets were well studied, several emerging advances promise to extend current applications to tissue engineering and beyond. Hydrogel droplets can be designed with high surface-to-volume ratios and a variety of matrix microstructures. Microfluidics provides precise control of the flow patterns required for droplet generation, leading to tight distributions of particle size, shape, matrix, and mechanical properties in the resultant microparticles. This review focuses on recent advances in microfluidic hydrogel droplet generation. First, the theoretical principles of microfluidics, materials used in fabrication, and new 3D fabrication techniques were discussed. Then, the hydrogels used in droplet generation and their cell and tissue engineering applications were reviewed. Finally, droplet generation mechanisms were addressed, such as droplet production, droplet manipulation, and surfactants used to prevent coalescence. Lastly, we propose that microfluidic hydrogel droplets can enable novel shear-related tissue engineering and regeneration studies.

Influence of structurally and morphologically different nanofillers on the performance of polysulfone membranes modified by the assembled PDDA/PAMPS-based hybrid multilayer thin film

A highly efficient nanofiltration membrane should exhibit high separation performance in removing divalent salts and organic solutes, as well as high permeation to meet practical separation and purification applications in aqueous media. Here, we designed a series of hybrid multilayer thin film membranes filled with the structurally and morphologically different nanofillers such as hexagonal boron nitride (HBN) nanosheets and metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles, consisting of 3 and 6 layer pairs of polyelectrolyte through the layer-by-layer self-assembly technique (LBL) and characterized them in terms of dye and salt separation, as well as permeation. The rejection performance and permeability of the designed membranes manifested that HBN nanosheets were more effective than MOF nanoparticles in achieving a high-performance membrane. As compared to the bare multilayer thin film membrane, the addition of HBN nanosheets within the negatively-charged layers of the multilayer thin film membrane consisting of 6 bilayers resulted in good retention of up to 93% and 92% for acid blue (ACB) and bromophenol blue (BPB) dye molecules, respectively. Besides, this membrane exhibited 60% and 45% improvement in the water flux for ACB and BPB solutions, respectively, while the rejection of the sulfate ions maintained an acceptable value around 78%. Furthermore, it was found that this HBN-embedded hybrid multilayer membrane had superior potential for the removal of coherent foulant compared to all samples.

Recent advances in microfluidic-aided chitosan-based multifunctional materials for biomedical applications

Chitosan-based biomaterials has shown great advantages in a broad range of applications, including drug delivery, clinical diagnosis, cell culture and tissue engineering. However, due to the lack of control over the fabrication processes by conventional techniques, the wide application of chitosan-based biomaterials has been hampered. Recently, microfluidics has been demonstrated as one of the most promising platforms to fabricate high-performance chitosan-based multifunctional materials with monodisperse size distribution and accurately controlled morphology and microstructures, which show great promising for biomedical applications. Here, we review recent progress of the fabrication of chitosan-based biomaterials with different structures and integrated functions by microfluidic technology. A comprehensive and in-depth depiction of critical microfluidic formation mechanism and process of various chitosan-based materials are first interpreted, with particular descriptions about the microfluidic-mediated control over the morphology and microstructures. Afterwards, recently emerging representative applications of chitosan-based multifunctional materials in various fields, are systematically summarized. Finally, the conclusions and perspectives on further advancing the microfluidic-aided chitosan-based multifunctional materials toward potential and versatile development for fundamental researches and biomedicine are proposed.

Copper-Modified Polymeric Membranes for Water Treatment: A Comprehensive Review

In the last decades, the incorporation of copper in polymeric membranes for water treatment has received greater attention, as an innovative potential solution against biofouling formation on membranes, as well as, by its ability to improve other relevant membrane properties. Copper has attractive characteristics: excellent antimicrobial activity, high natural abundance, low cost and the existence of multiple cost-effective synthesis routes for obtaining copper-based materials with tunable characteristics, which favor their incorporation into polymeric membranes. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the progress made in the area regarding modified membranes for water treatment when incorporating copper. The notable use of copper materials (metallic and oxide nanoparticles, salts, composites, metal-polymer complexes, coordination polymers) for modifying microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), forward osmosis (FO) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes have been identified. Antibacterial and anti-fouling effect, hydrophilicity increase, improvements of the water flux, the rejection of compounds capacity and structural membrane parameters and the reduction of concentration polarization phenomena are some outstanding properties that improved. Moreover, the study acknowledges different membrane modification approaches to incorporate copper, such as, the incorporation during the membrane synthesis process (immobilization in polymer and phase inversion) or its surface modification using physical (coating, layer by layer assembly and electrospinning) and chemical (grafting, one-pot chelating, co-deposition and mussel-inspired PDA) surface modification techniques. Thus, the advantages and limitations of these modifications and their methods with insights towards a possible industrial applicability are presented. Furthermore, when copper was incorporated into membrane matrices, the study identified relevant detrimental consequences with potential to be solved, such as formation of defects, pore block, and nanoparticles agglomeration during their fabrication. Among others, the low modification stability, the uncontrolled copper ion releasing or leaching of incorporated copper material are also identified concerns. Thus, this article offers modification strategies that allow an effective copper incorporation on these polymeric membranes and solve these hinders. The article finishes with some claims about scaling up the implementation process, including long-term performance under real conditions, feasibility of production at large scale, and assessment of environmental impact.
