Zeolites in Adsorption Processes: State of the Art and Future Prospects

Zeolites have been widely used as catalysts, ion exchangers, and adsorbents since their industrial breakthrough in the 1950s and continue to be state-of the-art adsorbents in many separation processes. Furthermore, their properties make them materials of choice for developing and emerging separation applications. The aim of this review is to put into context the relevance of zeolites and their use and prospects in adsorption technology. It has been divided into three different sections, i.e., zeolites, adsorption on nanoporous materials, and chemical separations by zeolites. In the first section, zeolites are explained in terms of their structure, composition, preparation, and properties, and a brief review of their applications is given. In the second section, the fundamentals of adsorption science are presented, with special attention to its industrial application and our case of interest, which is adsorption on zeolites. Finally, the state-of-the-art relevant separations related to chemical and energy production, in which zeolites have a practical or potential applicability, are presented. The replacement of some of the current separation methods by optimized adsorption processes using zeolites could mean an improvement in terms of sustainability and energy savings. Different separation mechanisms and the underlying adsorption properties that make zeolites interesting for these applications are discussed.

Separation of biobutanol from ABE fermentation broth using lignin as adsorbent: A totally sustainable approach with effective utilization of lignocellulose

Adsorption is considered to be a promising butanol recovery method for solving the issue of inhibition in the ABE (acetone-butanol-ethanol) fermentation. As a byproduct in the second generation biobutanol industry, lignin was found to be a good adsorbent for the butanol enrichment. It is conducive to the full utilization of renewable lignocellulose biomass resource. Kinetic and equilibrium experiments indicated that lignin had a satisfactory adsorption rate and capacity that are comparable to those of many synthetic materials. Multicomponent adsorption experiments revealed that lignin had higher adsorption selectivity toward butanol than that of ethanol and acetone. The adsorption capacity of lignin for butanol first increased and then gradually decreased with increasing temperature. And maximum adsorption capacity reached 304.66 mg g^-1 at 313 K. The inflection point of temperature is close to the ABE fermentation temperature of 310 K. The condensed butanol by desorption was 145 g L^-1, with a satisfying regeneration performance. ¹H NMR and FT-IR spectra indicated that the aromatic units of lignin formed π-systems with A/B/E. The π-system is particularly significant for butanol due to its longer hydrocarbon chain. These results could contribute to the emerging lignin-based materials for butanol separation.

Energy-Saving and Sustainable Separation of Bioalcohols by Adsorption on Bone Char

The separation of ethanol, propanol, and butanol from aqueous solutions was studied using adsorption on bone char. Adsorption kinetics and thermodynamic parameters of this separation method were studied at different conditions of pH and temperature. Results showed that the maximum adsorption capacities of these bioalcohols were obtained at pH 6 and 20°C. An exothermic separation was identified, which can be mainly associated to hydrophobic interactions between bone char surface and bioalcohols. Binary adsorption studies were also performed using mixtures of these bioalcohols. An antagonistic adsorption was observed for all bioalcohols where the ethanol and propanol separation was significantly affected by butanol. A model based on an artificial neural network was proposed to correlate both single and binary adsorption isotherms of these bioalcohols with bone char. It was concluded that the bone char could be an interesting adsorbent for the sustainable separation and recovery of bioalcohols from fermentation broths, which are actually considered emerging liquid biofuels and relevant industrial chemicals.

How to outwit nature: Omics insight into butanol tolerance

The energy crisis, depletion of oil reserves, and global climate changes are pressing problems of developed societies. One possibility to counteract that is microbial production of butanol, a promising new fuel and alternative to many petrochemical reagents. However, the high butanol toxicity to all known microbial species is the main obstacle to its industrial implementation. The present state of the art review aims to expound the recent advances in modern omics approaches to resolving this insurmountable to date problem of low butanol tolerance. Genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics show that butanol tolerance is a complex phenomenon affecting multiple genes and their expression. Efflux pumps, stress and multidrug response, membrane transport, and redox-related genes are indicated as being most important during butanol challenge, in addition to fine-tuning of global regulators of transcription (Spo0A, GntR), which may further improve tolerance. Lipidomics shows that the alterations in membrane composition (saturated lipids and plasmalogen increase) are very much species-specific and butanol-related. Glycomics discloses the pleiotropic effect of CcpA, the role of alternative sugar transport, and the production of exopolysaccharides as alternative routes to overcoming butanol stress. Unfortunately, the strain that simultaneously syntheses and tolerates butanol in concentrations that allow its commercialization has not yet been discovered or produced. Omics insight will allow the purposeful increase of butanol tolerance in natural and engineered producers and the effective heterologous expression of synthetic butanol pathways in strains hereditary butanol-resistant up to 3.2 - 4.9% (w/v). Future breakthrough can be achieved by a detailed study of the membrane proteome, of which 21% are proteins with unknown functions.

Preparation of Continuous Highly Hydrophobic Pure Silica ITQ-29 Zeolite Layers on Alumina Supports

The preparation of continuous layers of highly hydrophobic pure silica ITQ-29 zeolite, potentially applicable as hydrophobic membranes for separation of molecules based on their polarity, has been investigated. Continuous layers of intergrown ITQ-29 zeolite crystals were successfully grown on porous alumina supports by optimization of the synthesis conditions, such as the appropriate selection of the seeds, the procedure for the gel preparation, and the calcination conditions. This resulted in the formation of all silica ITQ-29 zeolite layers without the presence of germanium required in previously reported ITQ-29 membranes, with the subsequent improvement in quality and stability, as verified by the absence of cracks after calcination. We have proved that the incorporation of aluminum from the support into the zeolite layer does not occur, neither during the secondary growth nor through migration of aluminum species during calcination.

Highly Adsorptive and Magneto-Inductive Guefoams (Multifunctional Guest-Containing Foams) For Enhanced Energy-Efficient Preconcentration and Management of VOCs

The design of multifunctional materials is a current demand for high-end technological applications that need to combine different functions unable to be accomplished by a single material. The aim of this work is to present, at first glance, a new family of recently patented multifunctional porous materials developed by locating granular phases with specific functionality (guests) within the cavities of open-pore cellular materials (hosts) and, at second glance, the use of a set of these materials for the preconcentration and management of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These materials (herein known as Guefoams, acronym for Guest-containing foams), present host foams and guest phases that are not bonded and therefore allow fluids to pass through. The processing method is the gas pressure infiltration of a host precursor into preforms containing particulate guest phases covered by a NaCl martyr coating, which is later dissolved in water. The manuscript shows the manufacture and characterization of a specific set of Guefoams composed of aluminum foams that incorporate both steel particles and activated carbon particles as guest phases into the same material. These guest phases make the materials highly adsorbent and susceptible to rapid desorption by magnetic induction, two properties never achieved with traditional foams that transform these materials into perfect candidates for preconcentration and energy-efficient management of VOCs. The manuscript concludes with a discussion on advisible properties to consider when exploring the use of these materials in the mentioned applications.
