Removal of heat stable salts from N-methyldiethanolamine wastewater by anion exchange resin coupled three-compartment electrodialysis

Monoethanolamine (MEA) Degradation: Influence on the Electrodialysis Treatment of MEA-Absorbent

The thermal-oxidative degradation of aqueous solutions of carbonized monoethanolamine (MEA, 30% wt., 0.25 mol MEA/mol CO₂) was studied for 336 h at 120 °C. Based on the change in the color of the solution and the formation of a precipitate, the occurrence of thermal-oxidative degradation of the MEA solution with the formation of destruction products, including insoluble ones, was confirmed. The electrokinetic activity of the resulting degradation products, including insoluble ones, was studied during the electrodialysis purification of an aged MEA solution. To understand the influence of degradation products on the ion-exchange membrane properties, a package of samples of MK-40 and MA-41 ion-exchange membranes was exposed to a degraded MEA solution for 6 months. A comparison of the efficiency of the electrodialysis treatment of a model absorption solution of MEA before and after long-time contact with degraded MEA showed that the depth of desalination was reduced by 34%, while the magnitude of the current in the ED apparatus was reduced by 25%. For the first time, the regeneration of ion-exchange membranes from MEA degradation products was carried out, which made it possible to restore the depth of desalting in the ED process by 90%.

Modeling of Nanofiltration Process Using DSPM-DE Model for Purification of Amine Solution

The formation of heat stable salts (HSS) during the natural gas sweetening process by amine solvent causes many problems such as corrosion, foaming, capacity reduction, and amine loss. A modeling study was carried out for the removal of HSS ions from amine solution using nanofiltration (NF) membrane process that ensures the reuse of amine solution for gas sweetening. This model studies the physics of the nanofiltration process by adjusting and investigating pore radius, the effects of membrane charge, and other membrane characteristics. In this paper, the performance of the ternary ions was investigated during the removal process from methyl di-ethanol amine solution by the nanofiltration membrane process. Correlation between feed concentration and permeate concentration, using experimental results with mathematical correlation as Ci,p = f (Ci,f) was used in modeling. The results showed that the calculated data from the model provided a good agreement with experimental results (R2 = 0.90-0.75). Also, the effect of operating conditions (including feed pressure and feed flow rate on ions rejection and recovery ratio across the flat-sheet membrane) was studied. The results showed that the recovery and rejection ratios of the NF membrane depend on the driving pressure across the membrane. While the driving pressure is affected by the feed flow conditions and feed pressure.

Synergistic impact of cellulose nanocrystals with multiple resins on thermal and mechanical behavior

The cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) surface modified with phenolic and acrylic resins were investigated for different properties such as thermally stability and adhesive property, the mechanical properties of CNCs and interactions of the resulting materials at a micro-level are very important. Phenolic resins are of great interest due to their smooth structure, low thermal conductivity and good thermal insulation. However, the high spray rates and poor mechanical properties limit its use for external insulation of buildings. Acrylic resins are used as a matrix resin for adhesives and composites due to their adhesion, mechanical properties, and their good chemical resistance. The brittleness of acrylic resins makes them less attractive than the structural materials, being much harder. For this reason, most of the resins are modified with suitable elastomers, which act as hardeners. Therefore, treatment of these compounds is necessary. In this research paper, the effect of CNCs surface on phenolic and acrylic resins were investigated to obtain an optimized surface using three different weight (wt%) ratios of CNCs. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), X-rays diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize the structure, and investigate different properties of CNCs. Furthermore, the Zwick/Roell Z020 model was used to investigate the adhesion properties of the phenolic and acrylic resins with CNCs.

Electrodialysis Applications in Wastewater Treatment for Environmental Protection and Resources Recovery: A Systematic Review on Progress and Perspectives

This paper presents a comprehensive review of studies on electrodialysis (ED) applications in wastewater treatment, outlining the current status and the future prospect. ED is a membrane process of separation under the action of an electric field, where ions are selectively transported across ion-exchange membranes. ED of both conventional or unconventional fashion has been tested to treat several waste or spent aqueous solutions, including effluents from various industrial processes, municipal wastewater or salt water treatment plants, and animal farms. Properties such as selectivity, high separation efficiency, and chemical-free treatment make ED methods adequate for desalination and other treatments with significant environmental benefits. ED technologies can be used in operations of concentration, dilution, desalination, regeneration, and valorisation to reclaim wastewater and recover water and/or other products, e.g., heavy metal ions, salts, acids/bases, nutrients, and organics, or electrical energy. Intense research activity has been directed towards developing enhanced or novel systems, showing that zero or minimal liquid discharge approaches can be techno-economically affordable and competitive. Despite few real plants having been installed, recent developments are opening new routes for the large-scale use of ED techniques in a plethora of treatment processes for wastewater.
