Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Composites for Environmental Applications

From the point of view of the ecological environment, contaminants such as heavy metal ions or toxic gases have caused harmful impacts on the environment and human health, and overcoming these adverse effects remains a serious and important task. Very recent, highly crystalline porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with tailorable chemistry and excellent chemical stability, have shown promising properties in the field of removing various hazardous pollutants. This review concentrates on the recent progress of MOFs and MOF-based materials and their exploit in environmental applications, mainly including water treatment and gas storage and separation. Finally, challenges and trends of MOFs and MOF-based materials for future developments are discussed and explored.

Metal-organic framework-based materials for the abatement of air pollution and decontamination of wastewater

Developing new and efficient technologies for environmental remediation is becoming significant due to the increase in global concerns such as climate change, severe epidemics, and energy crises. Air pollution, primarily due to increased levels of H₂S, SO_x, NH₃, NO_x, CO, volatile organic compounds (VOC), and particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere, has a significant impact on public health, and exhaust gases harm the natural sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon cycles. Similarly, wastewater discharged to the environment with metal ions, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, dyes, and aromatics/organic compounds is a risk for health since it may lead to an outbreak of waterborne pathogens and increase the exposure to endocrine-disrupting agents. Therefore, developing new and efficient air and water quality management systems is critical. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel materials for which the main application areas include gas storage and separation, water harvesting from the atmosphere, chemical sensing, power storage, drug delivery, and food preservation. Due to their versatile structural motifs that can be modified during synthesis, MOFs also have a great promise for green applications including air and water pollution remediation. The motivation to use MOFs for environmental applications prompted the modification of their structures via the addition of metal and functional groups, as well as the creation of heterostructures by mixing MOFs with other nanomaterials, to effectively remove hazardous contaminants from wastewater and the atmosphere. In this review, we focus on the state-of-the-art environmental applications of MOFs, particularly for water treatment and air pollution, by highlighting the groundbreaking studies in which MOFs have been used as adsorbents, membranes, and photocatalysts for the abatement of air and water pollution. We finally address the opportunities and challenges for the environmental applications of MOFs.

Graphene Oxide and Metal-Organic Framework-Based Breathable Barrier Membranes for Toxic Vapors

Garments protective against chemical warfare agents (CWAs) or accidently released toxic chemicals must block the transport of toxic gases/vapors for a substantial time and allow moisture transport for breathability. These demands are challenging: either the barriers block CWAs effectively but have poor breathability or barriers have excellent breathability but cannot block CWAs well. Existing protective garments employ large amounts of active carbon, making them quite heavy. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based adsorbents are being investigated as sorbents for CWAs. Breathable laminate of graphene oxide (GO) flakes supported on a porous membrane reduces permeation rates of CWA simulants substantially. We developed a multilayered membrane-based flexible barrier: GO laminate-based membrane over a MOF nanocrystal-filled expanded polytetrafluorethylene (ePTFE) membrane having submicrometer pores. The GO laminate-based layer developed a steady breakthrough concentration level almost 2 orders of magnitude below the usual breakthrough level. This highly reduced level of CWA was blocked by the MOF nanocrystal-filled membrane substrate layer over a highly extended period. We demonstrated the blocking of CWAs, mustard (HD), soman (GD), a sarin simulant [dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP)], and ammonia for an extended period while the moisture transmission rate was substantial. The times for complete blockage of ammonia, HD, GD, and DMMP were 2750 min, 1075 min, 176 min, and 7 days, respectively. This remarkable performance resulted from a very low steady-state penetrant permeation through GO-laminate membrane and substantial penetrant sorption by MOF nanocrystals; furthermore, both layers show high moisture vapor transmission.

Ultrafast Degradation and High Adsorption Capability of a Sulfur Mustard Simulant under Ambient Conditions Using Granular UiO-66-NH2 Metal-Organic Gels

Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have been considered as prospective materials for the degradation of nerve chemical warfare agents (CWAs) but show poor catalytic performance toward blister agents. Moreover, the powder issues and the poor adsorption capability also remain as the major challenges for the application of Zr-MOFs in practical CWA detoxification. Herein, a series of defected granular UiO-66-NH2 metal-organic gels are synthesized via adjusting the amount of added concentrated hydrochloric acid for the decontamination of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (2-CEES), a sulfur mustard simulant. The half-life of 2-CEES decontaminated by defected granular UiO-66-NH2 metal-organic gels can be shortened to 7.6 min, which is the highest reported value for MOFs under ambient conditions. The mechanism of decontamination is that the amino group on the linkers in UiO-66-NH2 MOGs undergoes a substitution reaction with 2-CEES to yield 2-(2-(ethylthio)ethylamino)terephthalic acid, which is less toxic and fixed in the frameworks. The recycling test corroborates that the granular UiO-66-NH2 xerogels possess good stability and reusability. Static adsorption and desorption tests show that UiO-66-NH2 xerogels possess a high 2-CEES vapor adsorption capacity of 802 mg/g after exposure for 1 d and only 28 wt % desorption capacity after air exposure for 7 d. The dual function of ultrafast degradation and high adsorption capability provide a firm foundation for using UiO-66-NH2 xerogels as a future protection media.

UiO-66-NH2 Fabrics: Role of Trifluoroacetic Acid as a Modulator on MOF Uniform Coating on Electrospun Nanofibers and Efficient Decontamination of Chemical Warfare Agent Simulants

Protective fabrics with air-permeable and flexible features are crucial for practical application in the detoxification of chemical warfare agents (CWAs). Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) are desirable to exhibit outstanding degradation toward CWAs. However, generally, MOFs with powders cannot afford the utilization as a protective layer directly; meanwhile, it is still a puzzling challenge to integrate MOFs with textiles efficiently. Herein, we develop a scalable and controllable strategy to fabricate UiO-66-NH₂ on electrospun polyacrylonitrile nanofibers (UiO-66-NH₂ fabrics) firmly and uniformly to capture and catalyze 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) effectively for self-detoxification. The obtained UiO-66-NH₂ fabrics are greatly capable of specific surface area, ample porosity, excellent crystallinity, and abundant catalytic active sites. Consequently, CEES can be removed efficiently up to 97.7% after 48 h by reaction and adsorption. The degradation products mainly including ethyl-2-hydroxyethyl sulfide, ether, bis[2-(ethylthio)ethyl], and 2-(2-(ethylthio)ethylamino) terephthalic acid are detected. Moreover, the obtained nanofibrous fabrics possess air-permeable, washable, and flexible as well as lightweight merits, totally ensuring their promising engineering applications for protective clothing.
