Potential of aerobic granular sludge membrane bioreactor (AGMBR) in wastewater treatment

This investigation is a review of the potential of aerobic granular sludge membrane bioreactor (AGMBR) in wastewater treatment due to the advantage of combination of membrane and aerobic granules for reducing membrane fouling and enhancing removal performance. The AGMBR is the same as the membrane bioreactor (MBR), but the activated sludge is replaced by aerobic granular sludge. This technology combines the advantages of aerobic granular sludge, such as good settleability, strong ability to withstand shock-loadings and high organic loading rate, and capacity of simultaneous chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nitrogen removal, and advantages of membrane bioreactor (MBR) such as excellent effluent quality, high biomass content, low excess sludge production, and small land requirement. Therefore, it can be considered a promising option for efficient wastewater treatment. Most studies have shown that aerobic granules could control membrane fouling, which often occurs in MBR. The main fouling mechanism was determined to be surface fouling by floccular sludge in MBR but pore fouling by colloids and solutes in AGMBR. Aerobic granular sludge also removed COD and nitrogen simultaneously, with more than 60% total nitrogen removal efficiency. The formation and stability of aerobic granules in AGMBR with various operational modes are discussed in this study.

Smart utilisation of reverse solute diffusion in forward osmosis for water treatment: A mini review

Forward osmosis (FO) has been widely studied as a promising technology in wastewater treatment, but undesirable reverse solute diffusion (RSD) is inevitable in the FO process. The RSD is generally regarded as a negative factor for the FO process, resulting in the loss of draw solutes and reduced FO efficiency. Conventional strategies to address RSD focus on reducing the amount of reverse draw solutes by fabricating high selective FO membranes and/or selecting the draw solute with low diffusion. However, since RSD is inevitable, doubts have been raised about the strategies to cope with the already occurring reverse draw solutes in the feed solution, and the feasibility to positively utilise the RSD phenomenon to improve the FO process. Herein, we review the state-of-the-art applications of RSD and their benefits such as improving selectivity and maintaining the stability of the feed solution for both independent FO processes and FO integrated processes. We also provide an outlook and discuss important considerations, including membrane fouling, membrane development and draw/feed solution properties, in RSD utilisation for water and wastewater treatment.

Applications of submerged and staged membrane systems for pollutant removal from effluents and mechanism studies - a review

Membrane based filtration is one of the promising technologies for rehabilitation of wastewater streams for reuse and recycle. Many advancements have emerged with the use of novel materials and innovative integrated technologies. The present investigation focuses on the treatment methods based on submerged and stages systems of membranes for water purification. Ceramic, polymeric and mixed matrix type of membranes fabricated for specific type of effluents, their modification methods for accelerating the rejection efficiency, permeability, durability, stability and antifouling properties are detailed in this review. Graphene oxide is the most considered membrane material for adsorption purposes as it exhibits larger surface area, abundant functional groups contain oxygen and has good supply of ligands which is responsible in metal adsorption as it enhances electrostatic interaction by bonding metal ions with graphene oxide nanosheets. Energy derivation in terms of biogas production was also reported in some integrated methods. In many cases, embedded nanomaterial matrices yielded maximum efficiencies in both the submerged and staged operations. However, submerged type of membranes are reported more than the staged type due to simpler configuration with relatively lesser equipment, operational and maintenance issues. In treatment of a low strength wastewater, aluminum oxide based membrane in fluidized bed assembly was reported to yield promising results with reduced power requirement.
