Abstract
This study introduces an innovative approach using highly efficient nanocomposite materials to effectively remove PFAS from water, demonstrating remarkable adsorption capabilities. The nanocomposite was synthesized by integrating a zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) called UiO-66 with graphene oxide (GO) within a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix. The resulting PVA@UiO-66/GO material features flower-like UiO-66 MOF crystals embedded in the PVA and GO matrix. Various kinetic models were applied to determine the rate constants and adsorption capacities, with the Langmuir isotherm indicating an adsorption capacity of 9.904 mg/g. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed the process's spontaneity and exothermic nature. The UiO-66-NH2/GO/PVA composite also demonstrated high reusability, maintaining substantial PFOA removal efficiency across multiple cycles, with optimal reduction occurring at approximately pH 5. Overall, the PVA@UiO-66/GO composites offer an effective, sustainable, and environmentally friendly solution for PFAS removal in water purification.

Abstract
Water and other small molecules frequently coordinate within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These coordinated molecules may actively engage in mass transfer, moving together with the transport molecules, but this phenomenon has yet to be examined. In this study, we explore a unique water transfer mechanism in UTSA-280, where an incoming water molecule can displace a coordinated molecule for mass transfer. We refer to this process as the "knock-off" mechanism. Despite UTSA-280 possessing one-dimensional channels, the knock-off transport enables water movement along the other two axes, effectively simulating a pseudo-three-dimensional mass transfer. Even with a relatively narrow pore width, the knock-off mechanism enables a high water flux in the UTSA-280 membrane. The knock-off mechanism also renders UTSA-280 superior water/ethanol diffusion selectivity for pervaporation. To validate this unique mechanism, we conducted 1 H and 2 H solid-state NMR on UTSA-280 after the adsorption of deuterated water. We also derived potential energy diagrams from the density functional theory to gain atomic-level insight into the knock-off and the direct-hopping mechanisms. The simulation findings reveal that the energy barrier of the knock-off mechanism is marginally lower than the direct-hopping pathway, implying its potential role in enhancing water diffusion in UTSA-280.

Abstract
The incorporation of different functional fillers has been widely used to improve the properties of polymeric materials. The polyhydroxy structure of PVA with excellent film-forming ability can be easily combined with organic/inorganic multifunctional compounds, and such an interesting combining phenomenon can create a variety of functional materials in the field of materials science. The composite membrane material obtained by combining MOF material with high porosity, specific surface area, and adjustable structure with PVA, a non-toxic and low-cost polymer material with good solubility and biodegradability, can combine the processability of PVA with the excellent performance of porous filler MOFs, solving the problem that the poor machinability of MOFs and the difficulty of recycling limit the practical application of powdered MOFs and improving the physicochemical properties of PVA, maximizing the advantages of the material to develop a wider range of applications. Firstly, we systematically summarize the preparation of MOF/PVA composite membrane materials using solution casting, electrostatic spinning, and other different methods for such excellent properties, in addition to discussing in detail the various applications of MOF/PVA composite membranes in water treatment, sensing, air purification, separation, antibacterials, and so on. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of the difficulties that need to be overcome during the film formation process to affect the performance of the composite film and offer encouraging solutions.

Abstract
The energy crisis in the world is increasing rapidly owing to the shortage of fossil fuel reserves. Climate change and an increase in global warming necessitates a change in focus from petroleum-based fuels to renewable fuels such as biofuels. The remodeling of existing separation processes using various nanomaterials is of a growing interest to industrial separation methods. Recently, the design of membrane technologies has been the most focused research area concerning fermentation broth to enhance performance efficiency, while recovering those byproducts to be used as value added fuels. Specifically, the use of novel nano material membranes, which brings about a selective permeation of the byproducts, such as organic solvent, from the fermentation broth, positively affects the fermentation kinetics by eliminating the issue of product inhibition. In this review, which and how membrane-based technologies using novel materials can improve the separation performance of organic solvents is considered. In particular, technical approaches suggested in previous studies are discussed with the goal of emphasizing benefits and problems faced in order to direct research towards an optimized membrane separation performance for renewable fuel production on a commercial scale.

Abstract
A polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/SiO2 organic-inorganic hybrid membrane was fabricated, using PVA as the basic material, SiO2 nanoparticles as the inorganic material, γ-(2,3)-glycidoxy propyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTEOS) as the second modified agents. The dehydration performance of PVA-SiO2/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite membrane to ethyl acetate (EA)/H2O, EA/ethanol (EtOH)/H2O and EA/EtOH/acetic acid (HAc)/H2O solutions was investigated. After modification of the second coupling agent of APTEOS or GPTMS, PVA-SiO2/PAN composite membrane had the better dehydration performance to these aqueous solutions. When dehydrating PVA-SiO2/PAN composite membrane modified by GPTMS (M5 membrane) in EA/H2O binary solution (98/2, wt%) at 40°C, the separation factor and the total permeation flux were 5245 and 293.9 g m−2 h−1, respectively. The preparation method of PVA/SiO2 membrane through adding the second coupling agent was simple, it had good dehydration performance and has excellent application prospects. The sorption behavior of PVA/SiO2 hybrid membrane was systematically studied, providing sufficient data for studying the separation mechanism of pervaporative membrane. The degree of swelling (DS) and the sorption selectivity of the membrane in different feed compositions and temperatures were measured to determine the static sorption of membrane. Dynamic sorption more clearly reflects the sorption and swelling processes of the membrane, and the dynamic sorption curves of the membrane in EA aqueous solutions were obtained. The sorption behavior of membrane to permeate components was studied by ATR-FTIR. Changes in the characteristic peaks for the permeate components and membrane indicated the sorption behavior of the membrane.

Abstract
Two different types of 2D nanosheets, including hydrophobic graphene (GR) and hydrophilic graphene oxide (GO), were filled into poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymers to prepare mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for ethanol dehydration via pervaporation. The relationship between the physical/chemical properties of graphene and pervaporation performance of MMMs was investigated by a comparison of GR/PVA and GO/PVA MMMs in microstructure and PV performance. The incorporation of GO nanosheets into PVA reduced PVA crystallinity and enhanced the membrane hydrophilicity, while the incorporation of GR into PVA led to the opposite results. The incorporation of GR/GO into PVA depressed the PVA membrane swelling degree, and the incorporation of GR showed a more obvious depression effect. GR/PVA MMMs showed a much higher separation factor than GO/PVA MMMs, while they exhibited a much lower permeation flux than GO/PVA MMMs and pristine PVA membranes. The huge difference in microstructure and performance between GO/PVA and GR/PVA MMMs was strongly associated with the oxygen-containing groups on graphene lamellae. The higher permeation flux of GO/PVA MMMs was ascribed to the facilitated transport of water molecules induced by oxygen-containing groups and exclusive channels provided by GO lamellae, while the much lower permeation flux and higher separation factor GR/PVA MMMs was resulted from the smaller GR interplanar spacing (0.33 nm) and hydrophobicity as well as barrier effect of GR lamellae on the sorption and diffusion of water molecules. It was presumed that graphene intercalated with an appropriate number of oxygen-containing groups might be a good choice to prepare PVA-based MMMs for ethanol dehydration, which would combine the advantages of GR’s high interlayer diffusion selectivity and GO’s high permeation properties. The investigation might open a door to achieve both of high permeation flux and separation factor of PVA-based MMMs by tuning the microstructure of graphene.

Abstract
Amino ethers of ortho-phosphoric acid prepared using triethanolamine; ortho-phosphoric acid; polyoxyethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol and glycerol (AEPA-DEG/TEG/Gl) were investigated as extractants for the separation of aqueous ethanol solutions by extractive distillation. Using the method of open evaporation, the influence of the molecular structure of AEPA-DEG/TEG/Gl on the conditions of vapor–liquid equilibrium in ethanol–water solutions was studied. It has been shown that the addition of AEPA-DEG/TEG/Gl removes the azeotropic point. At the same time, the observed effect turned out to be significantly higher in comparison with the use of pure glycerol or glycols for these purposes. The UNIFAC model was used to calculate the activity coefficients in a three-component ethanol–water–AEPA-DEG/TEG/Gl mixture. Within the framework of this model, a division of AEPA-DEG/TEG/Gl molecules into group components is proposed. Previously unknown parameters of the groups PO–CH, PO–CH2, PO–OCH2, PO–NHCH2, PO–OH, and PO–H2O were determined from our own and published experimental data. The concentration dependences of the density and dynamic viscosity of AEPA-Gl aqueous solutions have been experimentally measured. Experimental studies of the extractive distillation of ethanol–water using AEPA-Gl as an extractant have been carried out in a column with bubble cap plates and a packing, and its high efficiency has been established.

Abstract
Abstract
Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) is viewed upon as a fuel additive or even as an alternative fuel. Fermentation is used to produce dilute (<20 mass%) ethanol. This is needed to be concentrated to almost anhydrous, fuel grade ethanol (>99.5 mass%). The technologies used for concentration from dilute grade to fuel grade ethanol are summarized in this review. Thus, extraction; distillation; use of membranes; adsorption and some miscellaneous methods are discussed in detail. For each technique, the inlet and outlet concentrations; merits and demerits and scope for future work are indicated. Hybrid separations are discussed. In addition to technical feasibility, economic viability of the techniques is also discussed. A brief discussion on current industrial practice is also presented.

Abstract
The distillation-based purification of α,β and α,ω-diols is energy and resource intensive, as well as time consuming. Pervaporation separation is considered to be a remarkable energy efficient membrane technology for purification of diols. Thus, as a core pervaporation process, hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membranes for the removal of water from 1,2-hexanediol (1,2-HDO) and organophilic polydimethylsiloxane-polysulfone (PDMS-PSF) membranes for the removal of isopropanol from 1,5 pentanediol (1,5-PDO) were employed. For 1,2-HDO/water separation using a feed having a 1 : 4 weight ratio of 1,2-HDO/water, the membrane prepared using 4 vol% glutaraldehyde (GA4) showed the best performance, yielding a flux of 0.59 kg m-2 h-1 and a separation factor of 175 at 40 °C. In the organophilic pervaporation separation of the 1,5-PDO/IPA feed having a 9 : 1 weight ratio of components, the PDMS membrane prepared with a molar ratio of TEOS alkoxy groups to PDMS hydroxyl groups of 70 yielded a flux of 0.12 kg m-2 h-1 and separation factor of 17 638 at 40 °C. Long term stability analysis found that both hydrophilic (PVA) and organophilic (PDMS) membranes retained excellent pervaporation output over 18 days' continuous exposure to the feed. Both the hydrophilic and organophilic membranes exhibited promising separation performance at elevated operating conditions, showing their great potential for purification of α,β and α,ω-diols.
