Abstract
Dialysis membranes are not hemocompatible with human blood, as the patients are suffering from the blood-membrane interactions' side effects. Zwitterionic structures have shown improved hemocompatibility; however, their complicated synthesis hinders their commercialization. The goal of the study is to achieve fast functionalization for carboxybetaine and sulfobetaine zwitterionic immobilization on PES membranes while comparing the stability and the targeted hemocompatibility. The chemical modification approach is based on an aminolysis reaction. Characterization, computational simulations, and clinical analysis were conducted to study the modified membranes. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) patterns showed a lower mean roughness for carboxybetaine-modified (6.3 nm) and sulfobetaine-modified (7.7 nm) membranes compared to the neat membrane (52.61 nm). The pore size of the membranes was reduced from values above 50 nm for the neat PES to values between 2 and 50 nm for zwitterionized membranes, using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. More hydrophilic surfaces led to a growth equilibrium water content (EWC) of nearly 6% for carboxybetaine and 10% for sulfobetaine-modified membranes. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements were 12% and 16% stable water for carboxybetaine- and sulfobetaine-modified membranes, respectively. Sulfobetaine membranes showed better compatibility with blood with respect to C5a, IL-1a, and IL-6 biomarkers. Aminolysis-based zwitterionization was found to be suitable for the improvement of hemodialysis membranes. The approach introduced in this paper could be used to modify the current dialysis membranes with minimal change in the production facilities.

Abstract
One of the most dangerous types of pollution to the environment is oily wastewater, which is produced from a number of industrial sources and can cause damage to the environment, people, and creatures. To overcome this issue, membrane technology as an advanced method has been considered for treating oily wastewater due to its stability, high removal efficiency, and simplicity in scaling up. Membrane fouling, or the accumulation of oil droplets at or within the membrane pores, compromises the efficiency of membrane separation and water flux. In the last decade, the fabrication of membranes with specific wettability to reduce fouling has received much consideration. The purpose of this article is to offer a literature overview of all fabricated anti-fouling super(wetting and anti-wetting) membranes for applicable membrane processes for the separation of immiscible and emulsified oil/water mixtures. In this review, we first explain membrane fouling and discuss methods for preventing it. Afterwards, in all membrane separation processes, including pressure-driven, gravity-driven, and thermal-driven, membranes based on the form and density of oil are categorized as oil-removing or water-removing with special wettability, and then their wettability modification with different materials is particularly discussed. Finally, the prospect of anti-fouling membrane fabrication in the future is presented.

Abstract
Neat poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes exhibit poor water permeance and surface hydrophobicity, resulting in poor antifouling properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of a fluorine-containing amphiphilic graft copolymer, poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate)-g-poly(ethylene glycol) behenyl ether methacrylate (PTFEMA-g-PEGBEM), hereafter referred to as PTF, and its effect on the structure, morphology, and properties of PVDF membranes. The PTF graft copolymer formed a self-assembled nanostructure with a size of 7-8 nm, benefiting from its amphiphilic nature and microphase separation ability. During the nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) process, the hydrophilic PEGBEM chains were preferentially oriented towards the membrane surface, whereas the superhydrophobic PTFEMA chains were confined in the hydrophobic PVDF matrix. The PTF graft copolymer not only increased the pore size and porosity but also significantly improved the surface hydrophilicity, flux recovery ratio (FRR), and antifouling properties of the membrane. The membrane performance was optimal at 5 wt.% PTF loading, with a water permeance of 45 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, a BSA rejection of 98.6%, and an FRR of 83.0%, which were much greater than those of the neat PVDF membrane. Notably, the tensile strength of the membrane reached 6.34 MPa, which indicated much better mechanical properties than those reported in the literature. These results highlight the effectiveness of surface modification via the rational design of polymer additives and the precise adjustment of the components for preparing membranes with high performance and excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract
Membrane fouling is a serious issue in membrane technology which cannot be completely avoided but can be diminished. The perspective technique of membrane modification is the introduction of hydrophilic polymers or polyelectrolytes into the coagulation bath during membrane preparation via non-solvent-induced phase separation. The influence of polyacrylic acid (PAA) molecular weight (100,000, 250,000 and 450,000 g·mol−1) added to the aqueous coagulation bath (0.4–2.0 wt.%) on the polysulfone membrane structure, surface roughness, water contact angle and zeta potential of the selective layer, as well as the separation and antifouling performance, was systematically studied. It was found that membranes obtained via the addition of PAA with higher molecular weight feature smaller pore size and porosity, extremely high hydrophilicity and higher values of negative charge of membrane surface. It was shown that the increase in PAA concentration from 0.4 wt.% to 2.0 wt.% for all studied PAA molecular weights yielded a substantial decrease in water contact angle compared with the reference membrane (65 ± 2°) (from 27 ± 2° to 17 ± 2° for PAA with Mn = 100,000 g·mol−1; from 25 ± 2° to 16 ± 2° for PAA with Mn = 250,000 g·mol−1; and from 19 ± 2° to 10 ± 2° for PAA with Mn = 450,000 g·mol−1). An increase in PAA molecular weight from 100,000 to 450,000 g·mol−1 led to a decrease in membrane permeability, an increase in rejection and tailoring excellent antifouling performance in the ultrafiltration of humic acid solutions. The fouling recovery ratio increased from 73% for the reference membrane up to 91%, 100% and 136% for membranes modified with the addition to the coagulation bath of 1.5 wt.% of PAA with molecular weights of 100,000 g·mol−1, 250,000 g·mol−1 and 450,000 g·mol−1, respectively. Overall, the addition of PAA of different molecular weights to the coagulation bath is an efficient tool to adjust membrane separation and antifouling properties for different separation tasks.

Salt Transport in Crosslinked Hydrogel Membranes Containing Zwitterionic Sulfobetaine Methacrylate and Hydrophobic Phenyl Acrylate. Polymers (Basel) 2023; 15:polym15061387. Abstract
Produced water is a by-product of industrial operations, such as hydraulic fracturing for increased oil recovery, that causes environmental issues since it includes different metal ions (e.g., Li+, K+, Ni2+, Mg2+, etc.) that need to be extracted or collected before disposal. To remove these substances using either selective transport behavior or absorption-swing processes employing membrane-bound ligands, membrane separation procedures are promising unit operations. This study investigates the transport of a series of salts in crosslinked polymer membranes synthesized using a hydrophobic monomer (phenyl acrylate, PA), a zwitterionic hydrophilic monomer (sulfobetaine methacrylate, SBMA), and a crosslinker (methylenebisacrylamide, MBAA). Membranes are characterized according to their thermomechanical properties, where an increased SBMA content leads to decreased water uptake due to structural differences within the films and to more ionic interactions between the ammonium and sulfonate moieties, resulting in a decreased water volume fraction, and Young’s modulus increases with increasing MBAA or PA content. Permeabilities, solubilities, and diffusivities of membranes to LiCl, NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, MgCl2, and NiCl2 are determined by diffusion cell experiments, sorption-desorption experiments, and the solution-diffusion relationship, respectively. Permeability to these metal ions generally decreases with an increasing SBMA content or MBAA content due to the corresponding decreasing water volume fraction, and the permeabilities are in the order of K+ > Na+ > Li+ > Ni2+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ presumably due to the differences in the hydration diameter.

Abstract
The development of high-flux, durable and completely self-cleaning membranes is highly desired for separation of massive oil/water mixtures. Herein, differently crosslinked poly(2-methacryloyloxylethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) brush grafted stainless steel mesh (SSM) membranes (SSM/PMPCs) were fabricated by integrating of mussel inspired universal adhesion and crosslinking chemistry with surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET-ATRP). The durability and self-cleaning performance of the prepared SSM membranes were evaluated by separating sticky crude oil/water mixtures in a continuous recycling dead-end filtration device. The water filtration flux driven by gravity reached 60,000 L⋅m-2⋅h-1 with a separation efficiency of over 99.98%. Furthermore, zero-flux-decline was observed during a 5 h continuous filtration when assisted by mechanical stirring. More significantly, such a completely self-cleaning separation of the well crosslinked SSM/PMPC2 membrane under optimized flux and stirring conditions had been operated cumulatively for 190 h in 30 days without any additional cleaning. These significant advances are more promising for practical applications in crude oil-contaminated water treatments and massive oil/water mixture separation.

Abstract
The application of membrane processes in various fields has now undergone accelerated developments, despite the presence of some hurdles impacting the process efficiency. Fouling is arguably the main hindrance for a wider implementation of polymeric membranes, particularly in pressure-driven membrane processes, causing higher costs of energy, operation, and maintenance. Radiation induced graft copolymerization (RIGC) is a powerful versatile technique for covalently imparting selected chemical functionalities to membranes' surfaces, providing a potential solution to fouling problems. This article aims to systematically review the progress in modifications of polymeric membranes by RIGC of polar monomers onto membranes using various low- and high-energy radiation sources (UV, plasma, γ-rays, and electron beam) for fouling prevention. The feasibility of the modification method with respect to physico-chemical and antifouling properties of the membrane is discussed. Furthermore, the major challenges to the modified membranes in terms of sustainability are outlined and the future research directions are also highlighted. It is expected that this review would attract the attention of membrane developers, users, researchers, and scientists to appreciate the merits of using RIGC for modifying polymeric membranes to mitigate the fouling issue, increase membrane lifespan, and enhance the membrane system efficiency.

Abstract
Postconsumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has potential applications in many areas of manufacturing, but contamination by hazardous polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in common waste streams can reduce its recyclable value. Separating collected PET-PVC mixtures before recycling remains very challenging because of the similar physicochemical properties of PET and PVC. Herein, we describe a novel flotation process with corona modification pretreatment to facilitate the separation of PET-PVC mixtures. Through water contact angle, surface free energy, X-ray photoelectron and FT-IR characterization, we found that polar hydroxyl groups can be more easily introduced on the PVC surface than on the PET surface induced by corona modification. This selective wetting can suppress the floatability of PVC, leading to the separation of PET as floating product. A reliable mechanism including two different hydrogen-abstraction pathways was established. Response surface methodology consisting of Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken designs was adopted for optimization of the combined process, and control parameters were solved based on high-quality prediction models, with fitting from significant variables and interactions. For physical or chemical circulation strategies with PET purity prioritization, the validated purity of the product reached 96.05% at a 626 W corona power, 5.42 m/min passing speed, 24.78 mg/L frother concentration and 286 L/h air flow rate. For the energy recuperation strategy with PET recovery prioritization, the factual recovery reached 98.08% under a 601 W corona power, 6.04 m/min passing speed, 27.55 mg/L frother concentration and 184 L/h air flow rate. The current work provides technological insights into the cleaner disposal of waste plastics.

Abstract
Membrane properties are highly affected by the composition of the polymer solutions that make up the membrane material and their influence in the filtration performance on the separation or purification process. This paper studies the effects of the addition of pluronic (Plu) and patchouli oil (PO) in a polyethersulfone (PES) solution on the membrane morphology, membrane hydrophilicity, and filtration performance in the pesticide removal compound in the water sample. Three types of membranes with the composition of PES, PES + Plu, and PES + Plu + patchouli oil were prepared through a polymer phase inversion technique in an aqueous solvent. The resulting membranes were then analyzed and tested for their mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, antimicrobial properties, and filtration performance (cross-flow ultrafiltration). The results show that all of the prepared membranes could reject 75% of the pesticide. The modification of the PES membrane with Plu was shown to increase the overall pore size by altering the pore morphology of the pristine PES, which eventually increased the permeation flux of the ultrafiltration process. Furthermore, patchouli oil added antimicrobial properties, potentially minimizing the biofilm formation on the membrane surface.

Abstract
Surface modification of membranes is an effective approach for imparting unique characteristics and additional functionalities to the membranes. Chemical grafting is a commonly used membrane modification technique due to its versatility in tailoring and optimizing the membrane surface with desired functionalities. Various types of polymers can be precisely grafted onto the membrane surface and the operating conditions of grafting can be tailored to further fine-tune the membrane surface properties. This review focuses on the recent strategies in improving the surface design of liquid separation membranes through grafting-from technique, also known as graft polymerization, to improve membrane performance in wastewater treatment and desalination applications. An overview on membrane technology processes such as pressure-driven and osmotically driven membrane processes are first briefly presented.
