Abstract
Optimizing the structure of the polyamide (PA) layer to improve the separation performance of PA thin-film composite (TFC) membranes has always been a hot topic in the field of membrane preparation. As novel crystalline materials with high porosity, multi-functional groups, and good compatibility with membrane substrate, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been introduced in the past decade for the modification of the PA structure in order to break through the separation trade-off between permeability and selectivity. This review begins by summarizing the recent progress in the control of MOF-based thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane structures. The review also covers different strategies used for preparing TFN membranes. Additionally, it discusses the mechanisms behind how these strategies regulate the structure and properties of PA. Finally, the design of a competent MOF material that is suitable to reach the requirements for the fabrication of TFN membranes is also discussed. The aim of this paper is to provide key insights into the precise control of TFN-PA structures based on MOFs.

Abstract
Positively charged nanofiltration membranes have attracted much attention in the field of lithium extraction from salt lakes due to their excellent ability to separate mono- and multi-valent cations. However, the thicker selective layer and the lower affinity for Li+ result in lower separation efficiency of the membranes. Here, PEI-P membranes with highly efficient Li+/Mg2+ separation performance are prepared by introducing highly lithophilic 4,7,10-Trioxygen-1,13-tridecanediamine (DCA) on the surface of PEI-TMC membranes using a post-modification method. Characterization and experimental results show that the utilization of the DCA-TMC crosslinked structure as a space-confined layer to inhibit the diffusion of the monomer not only increases the positive charge density of the membrane but also reduces its thickness by ≈35% and presents a unique coffee-ring structure, which ensures excellent water permeability and rejection of Mg2+. The ion-dipole interaction of the ether chains with Li+ facilitates Li+ transport and improves the Li+/Mg2+ selectivity (SLi,Mg = 23.3). In a three-stage nanofiltration process for treating simulated salt lake water, the PEI-P membrane can reduce the Mg2+/Li+ ratio of the salt lake by 400-fold and produce Li2CO3 with a purity of more than 99.5%, demonstrating its potential application in lithium extraction from salt lakes.

Abstract
Thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes with efficient molecular separation and organic solvent resistance are active in demand in wastewater treatment and resource reclamation, meeting the goal of emission peaks and carbon neutrality. In this work, a simple and rational design strategy has been employed to construct a sandwich-structured membrane for removing fluoroquinolone antibiotics and recycling organic solvents. The sandwich-structured membrane is composed of a porous substrate, a hydrophilic tannic acid-polyethyleneimine (TA-PEI) interlayer, and a polyamide (PA) selective layer decorated with metal-organic framework (PA-MOF). Results manifest that the hydrophilic TA-PEI interlayer played a bridging and gutter effect to achieve effective control in amide storage, amine diffusion, and nanomaterial downward leakage at the immiscible interface. The PA-MOF selective layer has been changed to a loosely crumpled surface, endowing functionalities on the sandwich-structured membrane that included limited pores, strengthened electronegativity, and stronger hydrophilicity. Thus, an enhanced water flux of 87.23 ± 7.43 LMH was achieved by the TFN-2 membrane (0.04 mg·mL-1 UiO-66-NH2), which is more than five times that of the thin-film composite membrane (17.46 ± 3.88 LMH). The rejection against norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and levofloxacin is 92.94 ± 1.60%, 94.62 ± 1.29%, and 96.92 ± 1.05%, respectively, effectively breaking through the "trade-off" effect between membrane permeability and rejection efficiency. Further antifouling results showed that the sandwich-structured membrane had lower flux decay ratios (3.36∼7.07%) and higher flux recovery ratios (93.40∼98.40%), as well as superior long-term stability after 30 days of filtration. Moreover, organic solvent resistance testing confirms that the sandwich-structured membrane maintained stable solvent flux and better recovery rates in ethanol, acetone, isopropanol, and N,N-dimethylformamide. Detailed nanofiltration mechanism studies revealed that these outstanding performances are based on the joint effect of the TA-PEI interlayer and PA-MOF selective layer, proposing a new perspective to break through the bottleneck of nanofiltration application in a complex environment.

Abstract
Nowadays polymer-based thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane technologies are showing key interest to improve the separation properties. TFN membranes are well known in diverse fields but developing highly improved TFN membranes for the removal of low concentration solutions is the main challenge for the researchers. Application of functional nanomaterials, incorporated in TFN membranes provides better performance as permeance and selectivity. The polymer membrane-based separation process plays an important role in the chemical industry for the isolation of products and recovery of different important types of reactants. Due to the reduction in investment, less operating costs and safety issues membrane methods are mainly used for the separation process. Membranes do good separation of dyes and ions, yet their separation efficiency is challenged when the impurity is in low concentration. Herewith, we have developed, UiO-66-NH2 incorporated TFN membranes through interfacial polymerization between piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) for separating malachite green dye and phosphate from water in their low concentration. A comparative study between thin-film composite (TFC) and TFN has been carried out to comprehend the benefit of loading nanoparticles. To provide mechanical strength to the polyamide layer ultra-porous polysulfone support was made through phase inversion. As a result, outstanding separation values of malachite green (MG) 91.90 ± 3% rejection with 13.32 ± 0.6 Lm-2h-1 flux and phosphate 78.36 ± 3% rejection with 22.22 ± 1.1 Lm-2h-1 flux by TFN membrane were obtained. The antifouling tendency of the membranes was examined by using bovine serum albumin (BSA)-mixed feed and deionized water, the study showed a good ~84% antifouling tendency of TFN membrane with a small ~14% irreversible fouling. Membrane's antibacterial test against E. coli. and S. aureus. also revealed that the TFN membrane possesses antibacterial activity as well. We believe that the present work is an approach to obtaining good results from the membranes under tricky conditions.
