Ultrasound-enhanced preparation and photocatalytic properties of graphene-ZnO nanorod composite

Ultrasound Pretreatment for Enhancing Fine and Ultrafine Flake Graphite Flotation Beneficiation

With the severe depletion of coarse flake graphite (a critical raw material) resources, developing and utilizing fine and ultrafine graphite resources have recently attracted attention. Froth flotation is a widely used technique for the initial enrichment of graphite; however, the flotation selectivity decreases significantly along with particle size reduction. Ultrasound pretreatment would be a promising method to improve the flotation of fine particles. As an innovative approach to understand better the flotation response of different flake graphite sizes, this study conducted a comparative analysis based on flotation concentrate yield and ash as well as ash removal rate between the flake graphite with various particle sizes after ultrasound pretreatment. Particle size, X-ray powder diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses were used to investigate the effect of ultrasound treatment on mineralogical properties of the flake graphite with varied particle sizes. Process outcomes indicated that the flotation performance of fine flake graphite (mean chord length: 62.63 μm) was significantly enhanced after ultrasound pretreatment. However, flotation of the ultrafine flake graphite (mean chord length: 24.97 μm) after ultrasound treatment was limited due to the difficulty of generating sufficient fragmentation and dissociation by microjets and shock waves formed by the cavitation effect. Compared with conventional flotation, the concentrate yield of ultrasound flotation increased from 88.95 to 94.98%, ash content decreased from 5.72 to 4.87%, and ash removal rate enhanced from 36.94 to 42.61%. Particle size and mineral property analyses confirmed that further crushing and dissociation of the larger flake graphite after ultrasound pretreatment would be the main factors contributing to improved flotation performance. Additionally, the formation of air flocs in the coarse flake graphite during the ultrasound pretreatment process facilitated the flotation recovery of the crushed graphite particles.

Highly Efficient SnIn4S8@ZnO Z-Scheme Heterojunction Photocatalyst for Methylene Blue Photodegradation

Building heterojunctions is a promising strategy for the achievement of highly efficient photocatalysis. Herein, a novel SnIn4S8@ZnO Z-scheme heterostructure with a tight contact interface was successfully constructed using a convenient two-step hydrothermal approach. The phase composition, morphology, specific surface area, as well as photophysical characteristics of SnIn4S8@ZnO were investigated through a series of characterization methods, respectively. Methylene blue (MB) was chosen as the target contaminant for photocatalytic degradation. In addition, the degradation process was fitted with pseudo-first-order kinetics. The as-prepared SnIn4S8@ZnO heterojunctions displayed excellent photocatalytic activities toward MB degradation. The optimized sample (ZS800), in which the molar ratio of ZnO to SnIn4S8 was 800, displayed the highest photodegradation efficiency toward MB (91%) after 20 min. Furthermore, the apparent rate constant of MB photodegradation using ZS800 (0.121 min-1) was 2.2 times that using ZnO (0.054 min-1). The improvement in photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the efficient spatial separation of photoinduced charge carriers through a Z-scheme heterojunction with an intimate contact interface. The results in this paper bring a novel insight into constructing excellent ZnO-based photocatalytic systems for wastewater purification.

Efficient Cr(vi) removal by expanded graphite synergized with oxalic acid under UV irradiation

Expanded graphite (EG), an easily-obtained carbon material with the potential of transferring electrons, was utilized successfully in the removal of hazardous hexavalent chromium (Cr(vi)) by environment-friendly oxalic acid (Ox) under UV irradiation. EG with a unique worm-like structure was obtained via a facile microwave treatment. The results showed that the EG + Ox + UV system had optimum performance, removing 99.32% of the Cr(vi) (1 mM) within 60 min at pH = 3, and the kinetic rate constant of Cr(vi) elimination was 7.95 mol L^-1 min^-1. Three components are potentially involved in the Cr(vi) elimination mechanism by the EG + Ox + UV system: (1) the direct electron transfer (DET) pathway of the EG-Ox-Cr(vi) through the acceleration effect of EG caused the majority removal of Cr(vi) under UV; (2) ·CO₂ ^- generated from Ox photolysis was used to reduce some Cr(vi); (3) ·CO₂ ^- created from Cr(vi)-Ox complexes in the solution through the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) pathway also reduced a little Cr(vi). Overall, the efficient removal of Cr(vi) by the EG + Ox + UV system provided new ideas for future research on Cr(vi) treatment.

Viscosity Simulation of Glass Microfiber and an Unusual Air Filter with High-Efficiency Antibacterial Functionality Enabled by ZnO/Graphene-Modified Glass Microfiber

The current global pandemic of new coronary pneumonia clearly reveals the importance of developing highly efficient filtration and fast germicidal performance of multifunctional air filters. In this study, a novel air filter with a controllable morphology based on the rod-like to flower-like zinc oxide/graphene-based photocatalytic composite particles loaded on glass microfiber was prepared by one-step microwave rapid synthesis. The multifunctional air filter shows the following special functions: the 10 mg·L^-1 organic pollutant solution RhB was completely degraded within 2 h under a 500 W xenon lamp, and also 99% of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were inactivated under a 60 W light-emitting diode lamp. Furthermore, after introducing the controllable morphology zinc oxide/graphene-based photocatalytic composite particles, the filtration efficiency of the multifunctional air filter was also kept at the same level (99.8%) as the one without any addition, indicating no loss of high-efficiency filtration while obtaining the rapid bactericidal function. The rapid antibacterial principle of the multifunctional air filter has also been proposed through the UV-vis spectroscopies, photoluminescence, and electron-spin resonance spectrum. The zinc oxide/graphene-based photocatalytic composite particles tightly coated on the glass microfiber surface could increase the active sites by changing the morphology of zinc oxide and, in the meantime, promote the separation of zinc oxide photo-generated electron-hole pairs to improve the rapid sterilization ability of the multifunctional air filters. In addition, an empirical formula to evaluate the relationship between the composition, viscosity, and viscosity modulus of glass microfiber was proposed by testing the viscosity of glass microfiber composed of 14 different compositions at 1300 and 1400 °C, which can be used as a criterion to evaluate the production technology of glass microfiber filters.

The superior adsorption capacity of 2,4-Dinitrophenol under ultrasound-assisted magnetic adsorption system: Modeling and process optimization by central composite design

2,4-Dinitrophenol (DNP) was listed as a priority pollutant; accordingly, DNP-contaminated effluent must be treated before discharging to the receiving resources. In the present study, the hybrid ultrasound-assisted GO-Fe₃O₄ system was employed to decontaminate DNP solution. Ultrasound irradiation makes the mass transfer of adsorbate improved and Fe₃O₄ enables GO separation from liquid phase under external magnetic field. The as-synthesized GO-Fe₃O₄ composite was characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, BET and VSM. A response surface methodology based central composite design (RSM-CCD) was used to estimate and optimize of various variables on DNP removal percentage. Under optimal conditions (pH: 4.45, adsorbent dose: 0.178 g/L, ultrasound frequency: 40.02 kHz and DNP concentration: 50.10 mg/L, maximum adsorption capacity was calculated to be 425.58 mg/g for the ultrasound system, higher than the simple system 309.40 mg/g, indicating the importance of synergistic effect between the ultrasound waves and the adsorption process. The ultrasound-assisted adsorption system showed the better agreement with the Langmuir isotherm (R² > 0.997), while the results of the stirring system were more consistent with the Freundlich model (R² > 0.991). The experimental results indicated that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well fitted by experiment data and rate constant was calculated to be 0.000148 min^-1 and 0.000002 min^-1 under ultrasound and silent systems, respectively. The rate of desorption under ultrasound was more favorable and reuse of the adsorbent in both systems after 10th consecutive cycles reduced by about 22%. Thermodynamic calculations also confirmed the endothermicity and spontaneity of both systems. Electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and π -π interactions played key roles during the adsorption of DNP onto the MGO. In conclusion, the outcomes of this study provide valuable information of the ultrasound-assisted GO-Fe₃O₄ system for practical applications.
