Abstract
Sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are the main culprits of microbiologically influenced corrosion in water-flooding petroleum reservoirs, but some sulphur-oxidising bacteria (SOB) are stimulated when nitrate and oxygen are injected, which control the growth of SRB. This study aimed to determine the distributions of SRB and SOB communities in injection-production systems and to analyse the responses of these bacteria to different treatments involving nitrate and oxygen. Desulfovibrio, Desulfobacca, Desulfobulbus, Sulfuricurvum and Dechloromonas were commonly detected via 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Still, no significant differences were observed for either the SRB or SOB communities between injection and production wells. Three groups of water samples collected from different sampling sites were incubated. Statistical analysis of functional gene (dsrB and soxB) clone libraries and quantitative polymerase chain reaction showed that the SOB community structures were more strongly affected by the nitrate and oxygen levels than SRB clustered according to the sampling site; moreover, both the SRB and SOB community abundances significantly changed. Additionally, the highest SRB inhibitory effect and the lowest dsrB/soxB ratio were obtained under high concentrations of nitrate and oxygen in the three groups, suggesting that the synergistic effect of nitrate and oxygen level was strong on the inhibition of SRB by potential SOB.

Abstract
Microbial bioemulsifiers are molecules of amphiphilic nature and high molecular weight that are efficient in emulsifying two immiscible phases such as water and oil. These molecules are less effective in reducing surface tension and are synthesized by bacteria, yeast and filamentous fungi. Unlike synthetic emulsifiers, microbial bioemulsifiers have unique advantages such as biocompatibility, non-toxicity, biodegradability, efficiency at low concentrations and high selectivity under different conditions of pH, temperature and salinity. The adoption of microbial bioemulsifiers as alternatives to their synthetic counterparts has been growing in ongoing research. This article analyzes the production of microbial-based emulsifiers, the raw materials and fermentation processes used, as well as the scale-up and commercial applications of some of these biomolecules. The current trend of incorporating natural compounds into industrial formulations indicates that the search for new bioemulsifiers will continue to increase, with emphasis on performance improvement and economically viable processes.

Abstract
Biological souring (producing sulfide) is a global challenge facing anaerobic water bodies, especially the oil reservoir fluids. Nitrate injection has demonstrated great potential in souring control, and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) bacteria was proposed to play crucial roles in the process. How to durably control souring with nitrate amendment, however, remains undiscovered. Herein, Gordonia sp. TD-4, a DNRA-driven sulfide-oxidizing bacterium, was used to elucidate the effects of bio-augmentation with DNRA bacteria on the durability of nitrate-mediated souring control. The results revealed that nitrate amendment combined with bio-augmentation with TD-4 after souring could effectively control souring and enhance the durability of nitrate-mediated souring control, while nitrate amendment before souring failed to persistently control souring. Nitrate amendment before and after souring resulted in different evolution dynamics of nitrate-reducing bacteria. Denitrifying bacteria were enriched in reactors amended with nitrate before souring or in dissolved sulfide exhausted reactors amended with nitrate after souring. The heterotrophic denitrifying activity of denitrifying bacteria, however, decreased the durability of nitrate-mediated souring control. Comparative and functional genomics analysis identified potential niche adaptation mechanisms (autotrophic and heterotrophic nitrate/nitrite reduction, including DNRA and denitrification) of predominant SRB in nitrate-amended environments, which were responsible for the rapid resumption of sulfide accumulation after the depletion of nitrate and nitrite. Pulsed injection of nitrate combined with bio-augmentation with DNRA-driven sulfide-oxidizing bacteria was proposed as a potential method to enhance the durability of nitrate-mediated souring control. The findings were innovatively applied to simultaneous bio-demulsification and souring control of emulsified and sour produced water from the petroleum industry.

A New Biosurfactant/Bioemulsifier from Gordonia alkanivorans Strain 1B: Production and Characterization. Processes (Basel) 2022. Abstract
Biosurfactants and bioemulsifiers (BS/BE) are naturally synthesized molecules, which can be used as alternatives to traditional detergents. These molecules are commonly produced by microorganisms isolated from hydrocarbon-rich environments. Gordonia alkanivorans strain 1B was originally found in such an environment, however little was known about its abilities as a BS/BE producer. The goal of this work was to access the potential of strain 1B as a BS/BE producer and perform the initial characterization of the produced compounds. It was demonstrated that strain 1B was able to synthesize lipoglycoprotein compounds with BS/BE properties, both extracellularly and adhered to the cells, without the need for a hydrophobic inducer, producing emulsion in several different hydrophobic phases. Using a crude BS/BE powder, the critical micelle concentration was determined (CMC = 16.94 mg/L), and its capacity to reduce the surface tension to a minimum of 35.63 mN/m was demonstrated, surpassing many commercial surfactants. Moreover, after dialysis, emulsification assays revealed an activity similar to that of Triton X-100 in almond and sunflower oils. In benzene, the E24 value attained was 83.45%, which is 30% greater than that of the commercial alternative. The results obtained highlight for the presence of promising novel BS/BE produced by strain 1B.

Abstract
Carbon sources have been reported to determine the bio-demulsifying performance and mechanisms. However, the genetic regulation of carbon sources-mediated bio-demulsification remains unclear. Here, the effects of β-oxidation, stress response, and nitrate metabolism on the demulsification of alkaline-surfactant-polymer flooding produced water by Gordonia sp. TD-4 were investigated. The results showed that competitive adsorption-derived demulsification was mediated by oil-soluble carbon sources (paraffin). Surface-active lipopeptides responsible for competitive adsorption-derived demulsification could be biosynthesized by the nonribosomal peptide synthetases and polyketide synthases using oil-soluble carbon sources. Bio-flocculation-derived demulsification was mediated by water-soluble carbon sources. Water-soluble carbon sources (sodium acetate and glucose) mediated the process of the dissimilatory reduction of nitrate to ammonia, which resulted in the variable accumulation of nitrite. The accumulated nitrite (>180 mg-N/L) stimulated stress response and induced the upregulation of chaperone-associated genes. The upregulation of chaperonins increased the cell surface hydrophobicity and the cation-dependent bio-flocculating performance, which were responsible for bio-flocculation-derived demulsification. The β-oxidation of fatty acids significantly affected both competitive adsorption-derived demulsification and bio-flocculation-derived demulsification. This study illustrates the synergistic effects of nitrogen sources and carbon sources on the regulation of bio-demulsifying mechanisms of TD-4 and identifies two key functional gene modules responsible for the regulation of bio-demulsifying mechanisms.

Abstract
Qatar is one of the major natural gas (NG) producing countries, which has the world’s third-largest NG reserves besides the largest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Since the produced water (PW) generated in the oil and gas industry is considered as the largest waste stream, cost-effective PW management becomes fundamentally essential. The oil/gas industries in Qatar produce large amounts of PW daily, hence the key challenges facing these industries reducing the volume of PW injected in disposal wells by a level of 50% for ensuring the long-term sustainability of the reservoir. Moreover, it is important to study the characteristics of PW to determine the appropriate method to treat it and then use it for various applications such as irrigation, or dispose of it without harming the environment. This review paper targets to highlight the generation of PW in Qatar, as well as discuss the characteristics of chemical, physical, and biological treatment techniques in detail. These processes and methods discussed are not only applied by Qatari companies, but also by other companies associated or in collaboration with those in Qatar. Finally, case studies from different companies in Qatar and the challenges of treating the PW are discussed. From the different studies analyzed, various techniques as well as sequencing of different techniques were noted to be employed for the effective treatment of PW.
