A stepwise separation process for selective recovery of gallium from hydrochloric acid leach liquor of coal fly ash

Novel process for high value utilization of high-alumina fly ash: valuable metals recovery and mesoporous silica in situ preparation

Extraction of valuable metals besides silica from high-alumina fly ash is one of the most important high-value utilization pathways. However, it is difficult to realize high-efficiency extraction due to the stable structure e.g. of quartz and mullite. In this paper, mineral phase transformation for valuable metal recovery and mesoporous silica in situ preparation from fly ash by a selective acid leaching method was proposed. The mineral phase transformation, dissolution behavior of each metal, and pore structure of fly ash derived mesoporous silica were systematically investigated. The results show that the co-activation of fly ash by Na2CO3-K2CO3 formed the phases of kalsilite and (Na, K)AlSiO4. During the acid leaching process, Al, Li, and Ga could be leached with the efficiencies of 86.17%, 89%, and 80% in the FK system. In the FN system, the efficiencies of Al, Li, and Ga are 92.38%, 95%, and 83%, respectively. The crystal plane (002) was destroyed for kaliophilite while all the crystal planes were destroyed for nepheline. With the increase of HCl solution concentration, the porous silica exhibited the same change order of pore shape. The pore structure of as-prepared porous silica was type IV and the hysteresis loop was type H3, and the specific surface areas could be 565.54, 448.02, and 746.76 m2 g-1, respectively. Finally, the leaching liquors can be used to produce crystal aluminum chloride, lithium carbonate and gallium. This paper might provide technical support for full recycling of high-value resources from fly ash.

Diffusiophoresis of a Weakly Charged Liquid Metal Droplet

Diffusiophoresis of a weakly charged liquid metal droplet (LMD) is investigated theoretically, motivated by its potential application in drug delivery. A general analytical formula valid for weakly charged condition is adopted to explore the droplet phoretic behavior. We determined that a liquid metal droplet, which is a special category of the conducting droplet in general, always moves up along the chemical gradient in sole chemiphoresis, contrary to a dielectric droplet where the droplet tends to move down the chemical gradient most of the time. This suggests a therapeutic nanomedicine such as a gallium LMD is inherently superior to a corresponding dielectric liposome droplet in drug delivery in terms of self-guiding to its desired destination. The droplet moving direction can still be manipulated via the polarity dependence; however, there should be an induced diffusion potential present in the electrolyte solution under consideration, which spontaneously generates an extra electrophoresis component. Moreover, the smaller the conducting liquid metal droplet is, the faster it moves in general, which means a smaller LMD nanomedicine is preferred. These findings demonstrate the superior features of an LMD nanomedicine in drug delivery.

Influence of planting yellowhorn (Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge) on the bacterial and fungal diversity of fly ash

Phytoremediation is a low-cost solution to fly ash pollution and the rhizosphere interactions between plant roots and the fly ash microbiome were important for the phytoremediation. To analyze the dynamic changes of the rhizosphere microbiome during yellowhorn cultivation in fly ash, the bacterial 16S rRNA gene V3-V4 region and the fungal ITS region of the rhizosphere microbiome were sequenced using Illumina MiSeq technology. The changes in fly ash physicochemical properties and the heavy metal content of different yellowhorn tissues were also analyzed. The results showed that both the bacterial and fungal communities were noticeably different after yellowhorn cultivation compared with the control sample. Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria levels increased (p < 0.05) and Firmicutes and Actinobacteria decreased (p < 0.05) in the bacterial community after yellowhorn cultivation. In the fungal community, Ascomycota and Mortierellomycota decreased (p < 0.05), while Chytridiomycota increased (p < 0.05). The levels of four heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Hg, Pb and As) decreased in the fly ash after yellowhorn cultivation. These metals were absorbed by the yellowhorn plants and accumulated in the fibrous root, taproot, stem and leaf tissues of these plants. Accordingly, the abundance of bacteria that could solubilize heavy metals increased (p < 0.05). In summary, the cultivation of yellowhorn affected the composition of the rhizosphere microbial communities in fly ash, which is of great significance for the biological remediation of fly ash.
