Synergistic enhancement of CO2/N2 separation performance via Ce-MOF-infused chitosan mixed matrix membrane

Reticular chemistry, exemplified by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), has proven invaluable in creating porous materials with finely tuned structures to address critical global energy and environmental challenges. In this context, the need for efficient carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and utilization has taken center stage. One promising approach involves the integration of MOFs into polymer matrix to develop mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). In this work, cerium-based MOFs (Ce-MOF) were selected due to their robust CO2 capture capabilities, while chitosan (CS) was chosen as the polymer matrix due to its reasonably good selectivity and balanced CO2 permeance for the development of MMMs for CO2/N2 (20/80 vol%) separation. A comprehensive suite of analytical techniques, including FTIR, XRD, FESEM, XPS, TGA, EDX, FETEM, and BET, was applied for precise characterization of both the MOF and MMMs. Various operational parameters, such as Ce-MOF content and temperature, were systematically explored to investigate the CO2 capture efficiency of the synthesized MMMs. The results revealed that the optimized Ce-MOF-embedded CS MMMs consistently outperformed the bare CS membranes.

Enhancement strategies of poly(ether-block-amide) copolymer membranes for CO2 separation: A review

Poly(ether-block-amide) (Pebax) membranes have become the preferred CO2 separation membrane because of their excellent CO2 affinity and robust mechanical resistance. Nevertheless, their development must be considered to overcome the typical obstacles in polymeric membranes, including the perm-selectivity trade-off, plasticization, and physical aging. This article discusses the recent enhancement strategies as a guideline for designing and developing Pebax membranes. Five strategies were developed in the past few years to improve Pebax gas transport properties, including crosslinking, mobile carrier attachment, polymer blending, filler incorporation, and the hybrid technique. Among them, filler incorporation and the hybrid technique were most favorable for boosting CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 separation performance with a trade-off-free profile. On the other hand, modified Pebax membranes must deal with two latent issues, mechanical strength loss, and perm-selectivity off-balance. Therefore, exploring novel materials with unique structures and surface properties will be promising for further research. In addition, seeking eco-friendly additives has become worthwhile for establishing Pebax membrane sustainable development for gas separation.

Recent Advances of Polymeric Membranes in Tackling Plasticization and Aging for Practical Industrial CO2/CH4 Applications—A Review

Membranes are a promising technology for bulk CO₂ separation from natural gas mixtures due to their numerous advantages. Despite the numerous fundamental studies on creating better quality membrane efficiency, scaling up the research work for field testing requires huge efforts. The challenge is to ensure the stability of the membrane throughout the operation while maintaining its high performance. This review addresses the key challenges in the application of polymeric technology for CO₂ separation, focusing on plasticization and aging. A brief introduction to the properties and limitations of the current commercial polymeric membrane is first deliberated. The effect of each plasticizer component in natural gas towards membrane performance and the relationship between operating conditions and the membrane efficiency are discussed in this review. The recent technological advancements and techniques to overcome the plasticization and aging issues covering polymer modification, high free-volume polymers, polymer blending and facilitated transport membranes (FTMs) have been highlighted. We also give our perspectives on a few main features of research related to polymeric membranes and the way forwards. Upcoming research must emphasize mixed gas with CO₂ including minor condensable contaminants as per real natural gas, to determine the competitive sorption effect on CO₂ permeability and membrane selectivity. The effects of pore blocking, plasticization and aging should be given particular attention to cater for large-scale applications.

A Review of the Recent Progress in the Development of Nanocomposites Based on Poly(ether-block-amide) Copolymers as Membranes for CO2 Separation

An inspiring challenge for membrane scientists is to exceed the current materials' performance while keeping the intrinsic processability of the polymers. Nanocomposites, as mixed-matrix membranes, represent a practicable response to this strongly felt need, since they combine the superior properties of inorganic fillers with the easy handling of the polymers. In the global strategy of containing the greenhouse effect by pursuing a model of sustainable growth, separations involving CO2 are some of the most pressing topics due to their implications in flue gas emission and natural gas upgrading. For this purpose, Pebax copolymers are being actively studied by virtue of a macromolecular structure that comprises specific groups that are capable of interacting with CO2, facilitating its transport with respect to other gas species. Interestingly, these copolymers show a high versatility in the incorporation of nanofillers, as proved by the large number of papers describing nanocomposite membranes based on Pebax for the separation of CO2. Since the field is advancing fast, this review will focus on the most recent progress (from the last 5 years), in order to provide the most up-to-date overview in this area. The most recent approaches for developing Pebax-based mixed-matrix membranes will be discussed, evidencing the most promising filler materials and analyzing the key-factors and the main aspects that are relevant in terms of achieving the best effectiveness of these multifaceted membranes for the development of innovative devices.
