Microbiological synthesis of denitrifying bacteria-iron nanopartical composite material and its eminent performance in removal of nitrate-N

Microbially driven Fe-N cycle: Intrinsic mechanisms, enhancement, and perspectives

The iron‑nitrogen (FeN) cycle driven by microbes has great potential for treating wastewater. Fe is a metal that is frequently present in the environment and one of the crucial trace elements needed by microbes. Due to its synergistic role in the microbial N removal process, Fe goes much beyond the essential nutritional needs of microorganisms. Investigating the mechanisms behind the linked Fe-N cycle driven by microbes is crucial. The Fe-N cycle is frequently connected with anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox), nitrification, denitrification, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), Feammox, and simultaneous nitrification denitrification (SND), etc. Although the main mechanisms of Fe-mediated biological N removal may vary depending on the valence state of the Fe, their similar transformation pathways may provide information on the study of certain element-microbial interactions. This review offers a thorough analysis of the facilitation effect and influence of Fe on the removal of nitrogenous pollutants in various biological N removal processes and summarizes the ideal Fe dosing. Additionally, the synergistic mechanisms of Fe and microbial synergistic N removal process are elaborated, covering four aspects: enzyme activity, electron transfer, microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion, and microbial community interactions. The methods to improve biological N removal based on the intrinsic mechanism were also discussed, with the aim of thoroughly understanding the biological mechanisms of Fe in the microbial N removal process and providing a reference and thinking for employing Fe to promote microbial N removal in practical applications.

Simultaneous removal of nitrate and heavy metals in a biofilm reactor filled with modified biochar

A biofilm reactor filled with chia seeds gum modified biochar was set up for the simultaneous removal of nitrate, cadmium and zinc from calcium-containing wastewater via denitrification and microbially-induced (calcium) carbonate precipitation. The reactor performance was studied under different conditions of pH, Cd concentration, and hydraulic retention time. The optimal removal efficiency of the reactor for NO₃^--N, Ca²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Zn²⁺ were 99.98, 79.89, 100, and 99.84 %, respectively. 3D-EEM indicated the aromatic compounds confirming the stability of the reactor. FTIR illustrated the presence of -OH, CaCO₃, C-O-C, and C-O-H indicating the precipitation and role of gum in MICP. SEM confirmed that the seed crystal induced the repeated crystallization of free metal ions. XRD showed that heavy metals were removed in the form of CaCO₃, CdCO₃, ZnCO₃, Ca₃(PO₃)₂, Cd₃(PO₃)₂, and Zn₃(PO₃)₂ co-crystallization. SEM-EDS showed the composition and distribution of elements. High-throughput sequencing showed that Curpriavidus sp. GMF1 and Ochrobactrum sp. GMC12 were the dominant bacterial species, with powerful denitrification and MICP mineralization capabilities.

Biochar fungal pellet based biological immobilization reactor efficiently removed nitrate and cadmium

To efficiently and simultaneously remove nitrate (NO₃^--N) and Cd(II) from aqueous solution, a novel type of biochar fungal pellet (BFP) immobilized denitrification bacteria (Cupriavidus sp. H29) composite was used in a bioreactor. The removal performance of the bioreactor R1 for the initial concentration of 27.7 mg L^-1 nitrate and 10.0 mg L^-1 Cd(II) reached 98.1 and 93.9% respectively, and the inoculation of strain H29 in bioreactor R1 significantly enhanced the removal efficiency of contaminants. The 3D-EEM spectra analysis showed that the activity of microorganisms in the bioreactor was higher at a lower concentration of Cd(II). FTIR indicated the effect of functional groups in BFP in bioadsorption of Cd(II). In addition, high-throughput analysis of species composition of the microbial community in the bioreactors at different levels demonstrated that strain H29 played a significant part in the bioreactor. This research provided a perspective for simultaneous restoration of nitrate and heavy metals in wastewater, and also enriched the application of fungal pellet (FP) in reactors.

A critical review of existing mechanisms and strategies to enhance N2 selectivity in groundwater nitrate reduction

The pollution of nitrate (NO3-) in groundwater has become an environmental problem of general concern and requires immediate remediation because of adverse human and ecological impacts. NO3- removal from groundwater is conducted mainly by chemical, biological, and coupled methods, with the removal efficiency of NO3- considered the sole performance indicator. However, in addition to the harmless form of N2, the reduced NO3- could be transformed into other intermediates, such as nitrite (NO2-), nitrous oxide (N2O), and ammonia (NH4+), which may have direct or indirect negative impacts on the environment. Therefore, increasing N2 selectivity is a significant challenge in reducing NO3- in groundwater, which seriously impedes the large-scale implementation of available remediation technologies. In this work, we comprehensively overview the most recent advances in N2 selectivity regarding the understanding of emerging groundwater NO3- removal technologies. Mechanisms of by-product production and strategies to enhance the selective reduction of NO3- to N2 are discussed in detail. Furthermore, we proposed topics for further research and hope that the total environmental impacts of remediation schemes should be evaluated comprehensively by quantifying all potential intermediate products, and promising strategies should be further developed to enhance N2 selectivity, to improve the feasibility of related technologies in actual remediation.
