Insights into the nonradical degradation mechanisms of antibiotics in persulfate activation by tourmaline

Oxygen atmosphere enhances ball milling remediation of petroleum-contaminated soil and reuse as adsorptive/catalytic materials for wastewater treatment

Ball milling is an environmentally friendly technology for the remediation of petroleum-contaminated soil (PCS), but the cleanup of organic pollutants requires a long time, and the post-remediation soil needs an economically viable disposal/reuse strategy due to its vast volume. The present paper develops a ball milling process under oxygen atmosphere to enhance PCS remediation and reuse the obtained carbonized soil (BCS-O) as wastewater treatment materials. The total petroleum hydrocarbon removal rates by ball milling under vacuum, air, and oxygen atmospheres are 39.83%, 55.21%, and 93.84%, respectively. The Langmuir and pseudo second-order models satisfactorily describe the adsorption capacity and behavior of BCS-O for transition metals. The Cu2+, Ni2+, and Mn2+ adsorbed onto BCS-O were mainly bound to metal carbonates and metal oxides. Furthermore, BCS-O can effectively activate persulfate (PDS) oxidation to degrade aniline, while BCS-O loaded with transition metal (BCS-O-Me) shows better activation efficiency and reusability. BCS-O and BCS-O-Me activated PDS oxidation systems are dominated by 1O2 oxidation and electron transfer. The main active sites are oxygen-containing functional groups, vacancy defects, and graphitized carbon. The oxygen-containing functional groups and vacancy defects primarily activate PDS to generate 1O2 and attack aniline. Graphitized carbon promotes aniline degradation by accelerating electron transfer. The paper develops an innovative strategy to simultaneously realize efficient remediation of PCS and sequential reuse of the post-remediation soil.

Photocatalytic activation of peroxydisulfate by UV-LED through rGO/g-C3N4/SiO2 nanocomposite for ciprofloxacin removal: Mineralization, toxicity, degradation pathways, and application for real matrix

If trace amounts of antibiotics remain in the environment, they can lead to microbial pathogens becoming resistant to antibiotics and putting ecosystem health at risk. For instance, ciprofloxacin (CIP) can be found in surface and ground waters, suggesting that conventional water treatment technologies are ineffective at removing it. Now, a rGO/g-C3N4/SiO2 nanocomposite was synthesized in this study to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) under UVA-LED irradiation. UVA-LED/rGO-g-C3N4-SiO2/PDS system performance was evaluated using Ciprofloxacin as an antibiotic. Particularly, rGO/g-C3N4/SiO2 showed superior catalytic activity for PDS activation to remove CIP. Operational variables, reactive species determination, and mechanisms were investigated. 0.85 mM PDS and 0.3 g/L rGO/g-C3N4/SiO2 eliminated 99.63% of CIP in 35 min and mineralized 59.78% in 100 min at pH = 6.18. By scavenging free radicals, bicarbonate ions inhibit CIP degradation. According to the trapping experiments, superoxide (O2•-) was the main active species rather than sulfate (SO4•-) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH). RGO/g-C3N4/SiO2 showed an excellent recyclable capability of up to six cycles. The UVA-LED/rGO-g-C3N4-SiO2/PDS system was also tested under real conditions. The system efficiency was reasonable. By calculating the synergistic factor (SF), this work highlights the benefit of combining composite, UVA-LED, and PDS. UVA-LED/rGO-g-C3N4-SiO2/PDS had also been predicted to be an eco-friendly process based on the results of the ECOSAR program. Consequently, this study provides a novel and durable nanocomposite with supreme thermal stability that effectively mitigates environmental contamination by eliminating antibiotics from wastewater.

Regulation of tourmaline-mediated Fenton-like system by biochar: Free radical pathway to non-free radical pathway

The heterogeneous Fenton-like systems induced by Fe-containing minerals have been largely applied for the degradation of organic pollutants. However, few studies have been conducted on biochar (BC) as an additive to Fenton-like systems mediated by iron-containing minerals. In this study, the addition of BC prepared at different temperatures was found to significantly enhance the degradation of contaminants in the tourmaline-mediated Fenton-like system (TM/H2O2) using Rhodamine B (RhB) as the target contaminant. Furthermore, the hydrochloric acid-modified BC prepared at 700 °C (BC700(HCl)) could achieve complete degradation of high concentrations of RhB in the BC700(HCl)/TM/H2O2 system. Free radical quenching experiments showed that TM/H2O2 system removed contaminants mainly mediated by the free radical pathway. After adding BC, the removal of contaminants is mainly mediated by the non-free radical pathway in BC700(HCl)/TM/H2O2 system which was confirmed by the Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). In addition, BC700(HCl) had broad feasibility in the degradation of other organic pollutants (Methylene Blue (MB) 100%, Methyl Orange (MO) 100%, and tetracycline (TC) 91.47%) in the tourmaline-mediated Fenton-like system. Possible pathways for the degradation of RhB by the BC700(HCl)/TM/H2O2 system were also proposed.

Harnessing the power of natural minerals: A comprehensive review of their application as heterogeneous catalysts in advanced oxidation processes for organic pollutant degradation

The release of untreated wastewater into water bodies has become a significant environmental concern, resulting in the accumulation of refractory organic pollutants that pose risks to human health and ecosystems. Wastewater treatment methods, including biological, physical, and chemical techniques, have limitations in achieving complete removal of the refractory pollutants. Chemical methods, particularly advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), have gained special attention for their strong oxidation capacity and minimal secondary pollution. Among the various catalysts used in AOPs, natural minerals offer distinct advantages, such as low cost, abundant resources, and environmental friendliness. Currently, the utilization of natural minerals as catalysts in AOPs lacks thorough investigation and review. This work addresses the need for a comprehensive review of natural minerals as catalysts in AOPs. The structural characteristics and catalytic performance of different natural minerals are discussed, emphasizing their specific roles in AOPs. Furthermore, the review analyzes the influence of process factors, including catalyst dosage, oxidant addition, pH value, and temperature, on the catalytic performance of natural minerals. Strategies for enhancing the catalytic efficiency of AOPs mediated by natural minerals are explored, mainly including physical fields, reductant addition, and cocatalyst utilization. The review also examines the practical application prospects and main challenges associated with the use of natural minerals as heterogeneous catalysts in AOPs. This work contributes to the development of sustainable and efficient approaches for organic pollutant degradation in wastewater.

A comprehensive review on persulfate activation treatment of wastewater

With increasingly serious environmental pollution and the production of various wastewater, water pollutants have posed a serious threat to human health and the ecological environment. The advanced oxidation process (AOP), represented by the persulfate (PS) oxidation process, has attracted increasing attention because of its economic, practical, safety and stability characteristics, opening up new ideas in the fields of wastewater treatment and environmental protection. However, PS does not easily react with organic pollutants and usually needs to be activated to produce oxidizing active substances such as sulfate radicals (SO₄^-) and hydroxyl radicals (OH) to degrade them. This paper summarizes the research progress of PS activation methods in the field of wastewater treatment, such as physical activation (e.g., thermal, ultrasonic, hydrodynamic cavitation, electromagnetic radiation activation and discharge plasma), chemical activation (e.g., alkaline, electrochemistry and catalyst) and the combination of the different methods, putting forward the advantages, disadvantages and influencing factors of various activation methods, discussing the possible activation mechanisms, and pointing out future development directions.

Magnetic graphene oxide for methylene blue removal: adsorption performance and comparison of regeneration methods

A series of Fe₃O₄-graphene oxide (GO) composite materials (MGOs) with abundant surface area, rich oxygen-containing functional groups, and magnetic properties were prepared in a facile coprecipitation method and then employed for the adsorptive removal of methylene blue (MB) from water. The kinetic data were better fitted in the pseudo-second-order model than in the pseudo-first-order model, and the intraparticle diffusion model revealed the two-step diffusion process including diffusion in the boundary layer and in the porous structures. The maximum adsorption amounts of MB were calculated to be 37.5-108 mg/g at 25 °C and pH 9 using the Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamic study showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous, with ΔH° of 23.0-49.6 kJ/mol and ΔS° of 131-249 J∙mol^-1∙K^-1. The adsorption amount of MB increased with pH in the range of 4-10. Inorganic ions including Na⁺ and Ca²⁺ suppressed the adsorption of MB, and the more pronounced impact of Ca²⁺ was ascribed to its higher valence state. The cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant showed a stronger inhibitory effect than Ca²⁺. The adsorption mechanism was proposed to be a combination of electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic adsorption, and electron donor-acceptor interactions. Two methods were used for the regeneration of spent MGO, and the results showed that the peroxomonosulfate (PMS) oxidation method was more favorable than the acid washing method, considering the better regeneration ability and lower amount of washing water used. Finally, the reaction mechanism of PMS oxidation was analyzed based on quenching tests and in situ open circuit potential measurements, which proved that OH and ¹O₂ played dominant roles and that the fine adsorption ability of MGO promoted the reaction between them and MB.

Iron Carbon Catalyst Initiated the Generation of Active Free Radicals without Oxidants for Decontamination of Methylene Blue from Waters

In conventional oxidation technologies for treatment of contaminated waters, secondary pollution of the aqueous environment often occurs because of the additional oxidants generated during the process. To avoid this problem, Fe/NG catalyst composites without additives were developed in this study for decontamination of methylene blue (MB) from waters. The Fe/NG catalyst, composed of carbon nitride and iron chloride (FeCl3·6H2O), was prepared by high temperature pyrolysis. It is an exceptionally efficient, recoverable, and sustainable catalyst for degradation of organic matter. The morphological characteristics, chemical structure, and surface properties of the catalyst composites were investigated. The catalyst exhibited high MB removal efficiency (100%) within 30 min under ambient temperature and dark conditions. The experiments indicated that an MB degradation effect was also applicable under most acid–base conditions (pH = 2–10). The characterization results using electron spin resonance and analysis of intermediate products demonstrated that free radicals such as ·OH and ·O2− were produced from the Fe/NG composites in the heterogeneous system, which resulted in the high MB degradation efficiency. Moreover, the catalysis reaction generated reducing substances, triggering iron carbon micro-electrolysis to spontaneously develop a microcurrent, which assisted the degradation of MB. This study demonstrates the feasibility of Fe/NG catalysts that spontaneously generate active species for degrading pollutants in an aqueous environment at normal temperature, providing an attractive approach for treating organic-contaminated waters.

Comparison of Four Tourmalines for PS Activation to Degrade Sulfamethazine: Efficiency, Kinetics and Mechanisms

Four types of tourmalines (TMs, S1, S2, S3 and S4) for activating persulfate (PS) to degrade sulfamethazine (SMT) were compared to find the most efficient catalyst. The four TMs were mesoporous materials with abundant functional groups, but were different in terms of size, composition, specific surface area, contact angle, and zero potential point. The removal of SMT in S1, S2, S3 and S4 systems with PS at the optimum reaction conditions ([SMT]₀ = 5 mg/L, [PS]₀ = 4 mM, [TM]₀ = 5 g/L, pH₀ = 5, and T = 25 °C) were 99.0%, 25.5%, 26.0%, and 51.0%, respectively, which might be related to the metal content of TM. Although the degradation of SMT in the S1/PS/SMT system was not dominated by SO₄^•− and •OH, the radicals contributed to the SMT removal in the S2, S3, and S4 systems. ¹O₂ and holes both contributed to the degradation of SMT in the four systems. The metal at the X position might be related to the generation of ¹O₂ and holes, while Fe of TM was mainly related to the generation of free radicals, such as SO₄^•−. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests confirmed that the separation of electrons and holes on the TM surface could be promoted by adding PS and SMT. S1 presented a higher electron-transfer rate than the other three TMs. The PS activation by TM with a high metal content at the X position provided an efficient and low-consumption treatment for antibiotic refractory wastewater.
