Developing eco-friendly, cost-effective, and efficient methods for treating water pollutants has become paramount in recent years. Biopolyelectrolytes (BPEs), comprising natural polymers like chitosan, alginate, and cellulose, have emerged as versatile tools in this pursuit. This review offers a comprehensive exploration of the diverse roles of BPEs in combating water contamination, spanning coagulation-flocculation, adsorption, and filtration membrane techniques. With ionizable functional groups, BPEs exhibit promise in removing heavy metals, dyes, and various pollutants. Studies showcase the efficacy of chitosan, alginate, and pectin in achieving notable removal rates. BPEs efficiently adsorb heavy metal ions, dyes, and pesticides, leveraging robust adsorption capacity and exceptional mechanical properties. Furthermore, BPEs play a pivotal role in filtration membrane techniques, offering efficient separation systems with high removal rates and low energy consumption. Despite challenges related to production costs and property variability, their environmentally friendly, biodegradable, renewable, and recyclable nature positions BPEs as compelling candidates for sustainable water treatment technologies. This review delves deeper into BPEs' modification and integration with other materials; these natural polymers hold substantial promise in revolutionizing the landscape of water treatment technologies, offering eco-conscious solutions to address the pressing global issue of water pollution.

Recent developments in synthesis of attapulgite composite materials for refractory organic wastewater treatment: a review

Attapulgite clay, due to its unique crystalline hydrated magnesium-aluminium silicate composition and layer-chain structure, possesses exceptional adsorption and catalytic properties, which enable it or its composites to be utilized as adsorbents and catalysts for wastewater treatment. But the drawbacks of attapulgite are also very obvious, such as relatively low specific surface area (compared to traditional adsorbents such as activated carbon and activated alumina), easy aggregation, and difficulty in dispersion. In order to fully utilize and improve the performance of attapulgite, researchers have conducted extensive research on its modification, but few specialized works have comprehensively evaluated the synthesis, applications and challenges for attapulgite-based composite materials in refractory organic wastewater treatments. This paper provides a comprehensive review of controllable preparation strategies, characterization methods and mechanisms of attapulgite-based composite materials, as well as the research progress of these materials in refractory organic wastewater treatment. Based on this review, constructive recommendations, such as deep mechanism analysis from molecular level multi-functional attapulgite-based material developments, and using biodegradable materials in attapulgite-based composites, were proposed.

Efficient Removal of Deltamethrin from Aqueous Solutions Using a Novel Lanthanum Metal-Organic Framework: Adsorption Models and Optimization via Box-Behnken Design

Eliminating pesticides is essential for lowering the dangers to our environment. To do this effectively, it is crucial to find adsorbents with remarkable adsorption capacities, easy retrieval, and separation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively recognized for their exceptional ability to absorb pollutants. Therefore, we used novel lanthanum metal-organic frameworks (La-MOFs) to eliminate deltamethrin (DEL) from aqueous solutions. We proved through experimentation that the La-MOF is an efficient adsorbent for DEL from water. A study of the material revealed that the adsorbent had a surface area of 952.96 m2 per gram and a pore volume of 1.038 cm3/g. These outcomes show how this substance can absorb particles. Utilizing kinetic models and conforming to the pseudo-second-order model, a thorough analysis of the efficiency of DEL adsorption onto La-MOF was conducted. To create a perfectly tailored approach, we utilized many parameters. The synthetic La-MOF adsorbent may undergo up to five steps of adsorption-desorption and has exceptional cyclability and reusability. To confirm purifying wastewater samples in the laboratory, the presentation of the established adsorbent was evaluated. For the management of industrial effluent and water filtration, the La-MOF adsorbent offered a simple and effective solution. Our investigation suggests that the method we describe for removing DEL from wastewater samples using the La-MOF adsorbent is unique.

Grafted Pullulan Derivatives for Reducing the Content of Some Pesticides from Simulated Wastewater

The goal of the current article was to obtain data regarding the application of a series of grafted pullulan derivatives, as flocculating agents, for removal of some pesticide formulations from model wastewater. The pullulan derivatives are cationic polyelectrolytes, with various content and length of grafted poly[(3-acrylamidopropyl)-trimethylammonium chloride] chains onto the pullulan (P-g-pAPTAC)]. The commercial pesticides are either fungicide (Bordeaux Mixture) (BM) or insecticides (Decis (Dc)—active ingredient Deltamethrin, Confidor Oil (CO)—active ingredient Imidacloprid, Confidor Energy (CE)—active ingredients Deltamethrin and Imidacloprid and Novadim Progress (NP)—active ingredient Dimethoate). The removal efficiency has been assessed by UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements as a function of some parameters, namely polymer dose, grafted chains content and length, pesticides concentration. The P-g-pAPTAC samples showed good removal efficacy at dose_op, more than 94% for BM, between 84 and 90% for DC, CO and CE and around 93% for NP. The maximum percentage removal decreased with the pesticides (DC, CO, CE, NP) concentration declining; no effect of BM concentration in suspension on its removal efficiency process has been noted. Differences indicated by zeta potential and particle size distribution measurements regarding the pesticides removal mechanisms by pullulan derivatives (charge neutralization, bridging, etc.) are discussed.
