Abstract
The application of magnetic fields (MFs) and magnetic particles (MPs) in water treatment has attracted widespread attention due to their stability, strong biological compatibility, and less chemical consumption. This study introduced MPs and MFs to GDM and probed their effects on filtration performance. Predeposited large MPs (P-large) and batch-added little MPs (B-little) intervened biocake layer development, forming more open and porous structures, they also reduced biomass secretion, resulting in flux increases of 13 % in P-large and 40 % in B-little than P-little, respectively. Besides, MFs controlled MPs distribution on the biocake layer, resulting in forming of more rough and open structures. A relatively lower magnetic field of 20 mT facilitated biomass secretion, while a higher magnetic field of 50 mT decreased biomass. Furthermore, applying magnetic fields decreased the ratios of α-helix and β-sheet, and increased random coil percentage. Thus, applying magnetic field mediation would contribute to the flux improvements in I-20 and I-50 by 29 % and 32 % relative to I-0. Economic analysis suggested introducing MPs and MFs to GDM was economically feasible, synergy of MPs and MFs had more economic advantages on the community scale and MPs-assisted GDM had significant economic advantages on both community and household scales. Future works should focus on developing new technologies for the recycling of MPs and membranes. This study provided new insight into the protein secondary structures associated with GDM performance and would encourage new sustainable MFs and MPs-assisted GDM technological developments.

Fluorine-free nanoparticle coatings on cotton fabric: comparing the UV-protective and hydrophobic capabilities of silica vs. silica-ZnO nanostructures. RSC Adv 2024; 14:4301-4314. Abstract
Robust, hydrophobic woven cotton fabrics were obtained through the sol-gel dip coating of two different nanoparticle (NP) architectures; silica and silica-ZnO. Water repellency values as high as 148° and relatively low tilt angles for fibrous fabrics (12°) were observed, without the need for fluorinated components. In all cases, this enhanced functionality was achieved with the broad retention of water vapor permeability characteristics, i.e., less than 10% decrease. NP formation routes indicated direct bonding interactions in both the silica and silica-ZnO structures. The physico-chemical effects of NP-compatibilizer (i.e., polydimethoxysilane (PDMS) and n-octyltriethoxysilane (OTES) at different ratios) coatings on cotton fibres indicate that compatibilizer-NP interactions are predominantly physical. Whenever photoactive ZnO-containing additives were used, there was a minor decrease in hydrophobic character, but order of magnitude increases in UV-protective capability (i.e., UPF > 384); properties which were absent in non-ZnO-containing samples. Such water repellency and UPF capabilities were stable to both laundering and UV-exposure, resisting the commonly encountered UV-induced wettability transitions associated with photoactive ZnO. These results suggest that ZnO-containing silica NP coatings on cotton can confer both excellent and persistent surface hydrophobicity as well as UV-protective capability, with potential uses in wearables and functional textiles applications.

Biodegradable electrospun fibers as sustained-release carriers of insect pheromones for field trapping of Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). PEST MANAGEMENT SCIENCE 2023; 79:4774-4783. Abstract
BACKGROUND Insect pheromones are highly effective and environmentally friendly, and are widely used in the monitoring and trapping of pests. However, many researchers have found that various factors such as ultraviolet light and temperature in the field environment can accelerate the volatilization of pheromones, thus affecting the actual control effect. In recent years, electrospinning technology has demonstrated remarkable potential in the preparation of sustained carriers. Moreover, the utilization of biodegradable materials in electrospinning presents a promising avenue for the advancement of eco-friendly carriers. RESULTS In this study, homogeneous and defect-free pheromone carriers were obtained by electrospinning using fully biodegradable polyhydroxybutyrate materials and pheromones of Spodoptera litura. The electrospun fibers with porous structure could continuously release pheromone (the longest can be ≤80 days). They also had low light transmission, hydrophobic protection. More importantly, the pheromone-loaded electrospun fiber carriers showed stable release and good trapping effect in the field. They could trap pests for at least 7 weeks in the field environment without other light stabilizers added. CONCLUSION Sustained-release carriers constructed by electrospinning and green materials could improve the efficacy of pheromones and ensure environmental friendliness, and provided a tool for the management of S. litura and other pests and sustainable development of agricultural. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
With industry development, the separation of oily wastewater is becoming more critical. Inspired by organisms such as lotus leaves, biomimetic superhydrophobic surfaces with micro-nano structures have shown great potential in this regard. In this work, PDMS/PVDF oil-water separation membranes with designed microstructures were prepared by electrospinning technology. The membrane-forming effect of electrospinning with different ratios of PDMS and PVDF was studied. The study found that membranes with high PDMS content were more likely to form microspheres, and PDMS tended to concentrate on the microspheres. The results also showed that the microspheres would bring better hydrophobicity to the membrane. When the ratio of PDMS to PVDF is 1:2, the membrane has a water contact angle of up to 150° and an oil contact angle of 0°. At this ratio, the separation efficiency of the membrane for the water-in-oil emulsion is 98.7%, and it can still maintain more than 98% after ten separation cycles, which is a good candidate for oil-water separation. Furthermore, microspheres enable the membrane to achieve macroscopic uniformity and microscopic phase separation so that the membranes have both good elongation and fracture strength. In addition, the PDMS/PVDF membranes also exhibit excellent UV resistance, and their UV protection factor is greater than 185, making them a potential UV protective material.

Abstract
For preparing high-performance electrospun fibers with functional molecules that cannot cross-entangle themselves, such as conductive polymers, promoting the aggregation of functional molecules on the surface by surface segregation is a promising approach. In the present study, electrospun polymethyl methacrylate/polyaniline (PMMA/PANI) fibers were prepared under various conditions, including solution composition, applied voltage, tip-to-collector distance, temperature, humidity, and gas-phase solvent concentration, to examine the effects of the parameters on fiber morphology and surface segregation. The changes in fiber morphology and variations in the intensity of PANI and PMMA's characteristic bands were investigated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that by changing the saturation difference and the viscosity, the amount of PMMA and PANI added significantly influenced whether surface segregation could occur. The effect of other investigated parameters on surface segregation was concluded to alter the molecular migratable time by affecting the jet flight time and the solvent volatilization rate. Among them, increasing the solvent concentration could significantly promote surface segregation without sacrificing morphological advantages. When the solvent concentration increased from 1.4 to 158 mg/m3, the Raman peak intensity ratio of PANI and PMMA increased from 2.91 to 5.05, while the fiber diameter remained essentially constant.
