Valuable cobalt/biochar with enriched surface oxygen-containing groups prepared from bio-waste shrimp shell for efficient peroxymonosulfate activation

Sulfate radical dominated rapid pollutants degradation leaded by selenium vacancies in core-shell N-doped carbon wrapped cobalt diselenide nanospheres

Herein, a new heterogeneous CoSe2-x@NC material with abundant selenium vacancies is synthesized via an in-situ carbonization-selenization process from cobaltic metal organic framework (Co-MOF). The obtained CoSe2-x@NC has a unique electronic structure and rich active sites, which can activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) with superior catalytic performance and stability. The quenchingexperiments and EPR test show that SO4•- is the dominant reactive oxidation species (ROSs) for CBZ degradation. Significantly, systemic electrochemical tests and theoretical calculations illustrated that the dominant role of SO4•- is attributed to the existence of abundant selenium vacancies in CoSe2-x@NC, which can adjust the density of electron cloud of the Co atoms in CoSe2-x@NC to improve the PMS adsorption and promoting the conversion of transition metallic redox pairs (Co3+/Co2+). This work provides a facile way to improve the activity and stability of CoSe2 by defect engineering in the PMS based advanced oxidation process (AOPs).

Efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction, UPLC-MS/MS detection, and consumption assessment of five trace psychoactive substances

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has become an objective and updated surveillance strategy for monitoring and estimating consumption trends of psychoactive substances (PSs) in the population. Firstly, magnetic shrimp shell biochar-based adsorbent (DZMBC) was synthesized and employed for extraction trace PSs from municipal wastewater. Proper pyrolysis temperature and increased KOH activator content favored the pore structure and surface area, thus facilitating extraction. DZMBC delivered exceptional extraction performance such as pH stability, anti-interference property, fast magnetic separation ability, reusability, and reproducibility. Then, a method based on magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was developed, validated, and utilized for the quantitative determination of five PSs in real wastewater samples. Methodological validation results indicated a favorable linearity, low method limits of detection (1.00-4.75 ng/L), and good precisions (intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations < 4.8%). Finally, an objective snapshot of Chongqing drug use and consumption pattern was obtained. Methamphetamine (MAMP) and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) were the prevalent illegal drugs in local. Both concentrations and per capita consumption of MDMA displayed a change (P < 0.05) between July and September, while no statistical differences were observed for each week.

Preparation and Application of Single-Atom Cobalt Catalysts in Organic Synthesis and Environmental Remediation

The development of high-performance catalysts plays a crucial role in facilitating chemical production and reducing environmental contamination. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), a class of catalysts that bridge the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, have garnered increasing attention because of their unique activity, selectivity, and stability in many pivotal reactions. Meanwhile, the scarcity of precious metal SACs calls for the arrival of cost-effective SACs. Cobalt, as a common non-noble metal, possesses tremendous potential in the field of single-atom catalysis. Despite their potential, reviews about single-atom Co catalysts (Co-SACs) are lacking. Accordingly, this review thoroughly summarized various preparation methodologies of Co-SACs, particularly pyrolysis; its application in the specific domain of organic synthesis and environmental remediation is discussed as well. The structure-activity relationship and potential catalytic mechanism of Co-SACs are elucidated through some representative reactions. The imminent challenges and development prospects of Co-SACs are discussed in detail. The findings and insights provided herein can guide further exploration and development in this charming area of catalyst design, leading to the realization of efficient and sustainable catalytic processes.

A novel Ce-Ni@biochar nanocomposite with enhanced photocatalytic activity towards organic dyes degradation: impact of process variables and water matrices

The intent of this research work is to implement a biogenic, affordable, and highly effective Ce-Ni@biochar catalyst in order to study its photoactivity in the removal of crystal violet and malachite green oxalate. The catalyst was synthesized using liquid phase reduction method where cerium and nickel nanoparticles are embedded on the rice husk biochar for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes in the presence of sunshine. Various characterization techniques were conducted on fabricated catalyst for adequate evaluation of the chemical composition as well as morphological and topographical properties of the formed compound. The nanoparticles embedded on biochar persuade increased charge separation that resulted in a substantial decrease in electron-hole recombination rate. The synergistic actions of the catalyst resulted in a high level of photocatalytic activity. The fabricated nanocatalyst showed excellent photoactivity that caused 96 and 99% degradation of crystal violet and malachite green oxalate, a growing industrial pollutant, within 35 and 25 min, respectively. A persuasive mechanism and kinetics are well presented. A series of investigations were done on other factors, such as contact duration, catalyst dosage, starting concentration, interfering ions, and pH, to know its degradation pursuance. The impacts of different water matrices were also investigated. The removal effectiveness of the synthesized catalyst persisted after five consecutive cycles. Marking the burgeoning industrial effluents as a result of rapid industrialization and also focusing on easy availability and low-cost source as well as high efficiency, reusability of the catalyst imparts its novelty and need of this research work.

Green and Facile Synthesis of Porous SiO2@C Adsorbents from Rice Husk: Preparation, Characterization, and Their Application in Removal of Reactive Red 120 in Aqueous Solution

In this work, a green, novel, fast, and facile approach for synthesizing a SiO₂/C nanocomposite series from rice husk (RH) through quenching and grinding techniques has been reported along with its application for the adsorptive removal of Reactive Red 120 (RR120) dye from an aqueous solution. The effect of carbonization temperature on the textural and interfacial features of RH was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the structure and elemental composition of the as-synthesized RH were investigated via XRD, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), FT-IR, Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The RH had a high surface area (521.35 m² g^-1), large micropores, mesopores, and total pore volumes of 0.5059, 3.9931, and 5.2196 cm³ g^-1, while SiO₂ and C were the two major components. In the batch adsorption test, the effects of pH, contact time, adsorbent mass, temperature, and initial RR120 concentration were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity was fitted by Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R), Hasley, Harkins-Jura, and BET isotherm models, and Langmuir was the best-fitted model. In addition, the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich chemisorption models were used to explain the adsorption kinetics. Additionally, the values of Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy thermodynamics suggested that the RR120 adsorption phenomenon by RH8-3 was endothermic and spontaneous. The adsorption process was controlled by a physical mechanism, and the maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 151.52 mg g^-1 at pH 2, with a contact time of 90 min, adsorbent amount of 0.03 g, and temperature of 313 K. The adopted technique may open up a new alternative route for the mass utilization of RH for the removal of dyes in water and wastewater and also for various practical applications.

Rape Straw Supported FeS Nanoparticles with Encapsulated Structure as Peroxymonosulfate and Hydrogen Peroxide Activators for Enhanced Oxytetracycline Degradation

Iron-based catalysts with high load content of iron sulfide (FeS) were commonly peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) activators to degrade organic pollutants but limited catalytic efficiency and increased risk of ferrous ion leaching restricted their use. Meanwhile, various biomass materials such as straw, peel, and branch have been extensively prepared into biochar for mechanical support for iron-based catalysts; however, the preparation process of biochar was energy-intensive. In this study, FeS nanoparticles modified rape straw composites (RS-FeS) encapsulated with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (RS-EDTA-FeS) were successfully presented by in-situ synthesis method for efficiently activating PMS and H₂O₂ to degrade oxytetracycline (OTC), which was economical and environmentally friendly. The results showed that the modified rape straw can remove OTC efficiently, and the addition of EDTA also significantly enhanced the stability and the reusability of the catalyst. In addition, EDTA also promoted the activation of H₂O₂ at neutral pH. The OTC degradation efficiency of the two catalysts by PMS was faster than that of H₂O₂, but H₂O₂ had a stronger ability to remove OTC than PMS. The highest OTC removal efficiency of RS-FeS and RS-EDTA-FeS were 87.51 and 81.15%. O₂^•- and ¹O₂ were the major reactive oxidative species (ROS) in the PMS system. Furthermore, compared with RS-FeS, the addition of EDTA inhabited the generation of O₂^•- in the PMS system. Instead, O₂^•- and ^•OH were the major ROS in the H₂O₂ system, but ¹O₂ was also identified in RS-FeS/H₂O₂ system. RS-EDTA-FeS showed a trend of rising first and then decreasing in recycle test. Instead, the removal rate of OTC by RS-FeS decreased significantly with the increase in reuse times. In the actual wastewater test, the TOC removal of two catalysts active by H₂O₂ was better than PMS, which was consistent with the test results of OTC, indicating that the two catalysts have application value in the removal of organic pollutants in actual wastewater. This study directly used plant materials as catalysts and omits the preparation process of biochar, greatly reduces the preparation cost and secondary pollution of catalysts, and provides theoretical support for the deepening of advanced oxidation technology.

Adsorption behavior of hierarchical porous biochar from shrimp shell for tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP): Sorption experiments and DFT calculations

Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) as a new type of flame retardant exists in various water environments, causing great risks to humans and the environment. In this study, shrimp shell was used to prepare an economical and environmental-friendly adsorbent for the efficient removal of TCEP. The systematic studies including characterization, removal performance, and adsorption mechanism of shrimp shell biochar toward TCEP were carried out. Adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics showed that fast equilibrium reached within 30 min, the maximum adsorption capacity q_m was 108 μmol g^-1 at 298 K, and the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic. The environmental factor, such as temperature, pH, inorganic anions and organic matter hardly affected the adsorption performance. Structural characterization indicated that the hierarchical porous structure of shrimp shell biochar is the key to excellent adsorption performance. The adsorption mechanisms were further revealed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and the hydrogen bond, van der Waals interactions, Cl-H interactions, and pi-H interactions were identified as potential interaction mechanisms between TCEP and specific biochar structures. The calculated binding energy between TCEP and simplified biochar structure suggested that oxygen-containing groups especially carboxyl, hydroxyl and aldehyde facilitate the adsorption. Our work not only provides a novel strategy for the quick remediation of organophosphate-contaminated water environments but also offers new opportunities for crustacean waste biomass valorization.

Comparison of different S-doped biochar materials to activate peroxymonosulfate for efficient degradation of antibiotics

The goal of this work was to elucidate the ability of biochar materials prepared by different methods to degrade antibiotics by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). S atom was doped into biochar using diphenyl disulfide (DD), sodium thiosulfate (ST), and thiourea (TU) as S precursors. The different doped materials were used to activate PMS and tested for the ability to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride, sulfadiazine sodium salt, and levofloxacin hydrochloride. The average degradation efficiencies of DD-doped hydrothermal + pyrocarbon (DD-HPBC), TU-doped hydrothermal + pyrocarbon (TU-HPBC), and ST-doped hydrothermal + pyrocarbon (ST-HPBC) were 83.76%, 86.74%, and 93.60%, respectively, all higher than the degradation efficiency of the undoped material. When sodium thiosulfate-doped pyrocarbon (ST-PBC), hydrochar (ST-HBC), and hydrothermal + pyrocarbon (ST-HPBC) were used to activate PMS, the highest degradation efficiencies were achieved, with average rates of 71.59%, 78.22% and 97.20%, respectively. ST-HPBC exhibited the highest concentration of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs), 9.47 × 10¹⁸ spin/g, among all biochar materials. Given this high concentration of EPFRs, use of ST-HPBC to activate PMS resulted in a very high rate of antibiotic degradation, and the concentration of EPFRs was positively correlated with the degradation efficiency. Increase of specific surface area, the thiophene S (-C-S-C-) ratio, and concentration of EPFRs in S-doped biochars promoted the degradation of antibiotics. For PMS activated by biochar, reactive oxygen species (ROS) degraded antibiotics in the order of sulfate radical (SO₄^•-) > singlet oxygen (¹O₂) > hydroxyl radical (•OH) > superoxide radical (•O₂^-). This work provides new insight into the application of S-doped sludge biochar materials.

Metal-free carbocatalysts derived from macroalga biomass (Ulva lactuca) for the activation of peroxymonosulfate toward the remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons laden marine sediments and its impacts on microbial community

Potential toxic chemicals, specifically, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are major sediment contaminants. Herein, green seaweed (Ulva lactuca) was used as a feedstock and pyrolyzed at temperature in the range between 300 and 900 °C. The metal-free carbocatalyst (GSBC) for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade PAHs contaminated sediments was studied. The effects of GSBC‒PMS treatment on microbial community abundance was studied as well. The pyrolysis temperature of GSBC preparation affected the PMS activation performance. Results show that GSBC700 exhibited remarkable catalytic characteristics in PAHs degradation by effective activation of PMS. The results also demonstrated that the sulfate radical-carbon-driven advanced oxidation processes (SR-CAOP) reaction achieved 87% and apparent rate constant (k_obs) of 6.3 × 10^-2 h^-1 of total PAHs degradation in 24 h at 3.3 g/L of GSBC, PMS dose of 1 × 10^-4 M, and pH 3.0. The degradation of 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-ring PAHs was 84, 83, 83, 80, and 89%, respectively. The synergetic effect established between GSBC and PMS enhanced the formation of ROSs, namely, SO₄^-, HO, and ¹O₂, which were major species contributing to PAHs degradation. The synergistic effect of π‒π stacking structure and graphitization of GSBC formed electron shuttle, which contributed to PAHs degradation performance. Microbial community structure analyses in the GSBC‒PMS treated sediments showed that the relative abundance of Lactobacillus_rhamnosus species, most of which belonged to the Lactobacillus genus and Firmicutes phylum, which aided in continuing PAHs biodegradation post GSBC‒PMS treatment. Therefore, GSBC can be a promising carbocatalyst produced via biomass-to-biochar conversion as biowaste-to-energy source used in the SR-CAOP-mediated process for sediment remediation.

Application of Biochar as Functional Material for Remediation of Organic Pollutants in Water: An Overview

In recent years, numerous studies have focused on the use of biochar as a biological material for environmental remediation due to its low-cost precursor (waste), low toxicity, and diversity of active sites, along with their facile tailoring techniques. Due to its versatility, biochar has been employed as an adsorbent, catalyst (for activating hydrogen peroxide, ozone, persulfate), and photocatalyst. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview and compare the application of biochar in water remediation. First, the biochar active sites with their functions are presented. Secondly, an overview and summary of biochar performance in treating organic pollutants in different systems is depicted. Thereafter, an evaluation on performance, removal mechanism, active sites involvement, tolerance to different pH values, stability, and reusability, and an economic analysis of implementing biochar for organic pollutants decontamination in each application is presented. Finally, potential prospects to overcome the drawbacks of each application are provided.
