Abstract
Layered lanthanum titanate (La2Ti2O7) perovskite is a good photocatalytic material owing to its high stability, strong redox ability, and non-toxicity. However, its inherent wide bandgap limits its application in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Therefore, combining La2Ti2O7 with two-dimensional (2D) narrow-bandgap semiconductors to form 2D/2D layered structures is the preferred strategy to improve its photocatalytic performance. In this study, a novel 2D/2D ZnIn2S4/La2Ti2O7 Z-scheme heterojunction was prepared through a solvothermal method. The experimental results show that when the molar ratio of La2Ti2O7 to ZnIn2S4 is 1 : 4, the hydrogen evolution rate of the composite under ultraviolet-visible light reaches 6.97 mmol g-1 h-1, which is 3.5 times higher than that of the pure ZnIn2S4. The results of the morphological characterization studies of the samples and the photoelectrochemical measurements show that channels for the rapid transfer of carriers are generated by the unique 2D/2D structure of these samples, and the separation and migration efficiency of the photogenerated carriers significantly improved due to the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction. This study provides useful insights into the modulation of wide-bandgap semiconductors and research into solar energy conversion.

Abstract
The construction of an S-scheme heterostructure is considered as a promising strategy for enhancing photocatalytic performance. Herein, a three-dimensional Bi5O7I (BOI) microsphere decorated with Bi2Sn2O7 (BSO) nanoparticles was prepared for the first time via a simple ultrasonic-assisted electrostatic self-assembly strategy and used for the degradation of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine. 3 wt% Bi2Sn2O7/Bi5O7I has the highest degradation activity (93.7 %), with an apparent rate constant of 0.0848 min-1, which is 2.55 times that of the original Bi5O7I (0.0333 min-1). Moreover, the optimal binary heterojunction photocatalyst has good reusability and universal applicability. The results of cyclic voltammetry tests clarify that the optimal photocatalyst can provide more surface reactive sites. The results of radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance indicate that holes (h+) and superoxide radicals are the main active radicals in the degradation process of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine. Photoelectrochemical and photoluminescence confirm that 3 wt% Bi2Sn2O7/Bi5O7I composites exhibit the highest separation rate of photogenerated carriers. Finally, based on the results of experimental studies and theoretical calculations, the S-scheme charge transfer path on Bi2Sn2O7/Bi5O7I composite is determined. This work provides a new perspective on how to design high-performance S-scheme bismuth oxyhalide-based heterojunction photocatalysts for solar energy conversion.

Abstract
Herein, we have reported a photocatalytic Bi5O7I, protonated g-C3N4 heterojunction with directional charge transfer channels provided by tea waste biochar to achieve effective e-/h+ pair isolation for the improved degradation of Methylene blue (MB) and Doxycycline hydrochloride (DCHCl). An S-scheme heterojunction was fabricated via the novel method that combined hydrothermal and ultrasonic dispersion, followed by an electrostatic self-assembly route. The as-fabricated Bi5O7I/protonated g-C3N4/Tea waste biochar heterojunction formed a strong contact at the interface, as supported by the electron microscopic results. As per the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation kinetics study, Bi5O7I/Tea waste biochar/protonated g-C3N4 (40 wt%) heterojunction showed a higher adsorption rate of 41.56% and 32% for MB and DCHCl within 30 min in the dark. Also, 92.02% MB and 90.21% DCHCl degradation rates in 60 and 90 min, respectively, are approximately 43 and 32 times higher than bare Bi5O7I and protonated g-C3N4 photocatalysts. The highest adsorption and degradation rate was achieved owing to the addition of Tea waste biochar and protonated g-C3N4 in a controlled ratio, and the sufficient interfacial contact between Bi5O7I and protonated g-C3N4 is for the improved isolation rate of e-/h+ pairs as evidenced by zeta potential values photoluminescence spectra as well as from scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, Bi5O7I/Tea waste biochar/protonated g-C3N4 (40 wt%) possessed high stability and recyclability after four consecutive cycles without much altering the degradation ability. Therefore, we believe that the as-fabricated Bi5O7I/Tea waste biochar/protonated g-C3N4 (40 wt%) provides new insight into the highly efficient S-scheme mechanisms significant for accelerating multicomponent photocatalytic redox reactions; while forming an effective visible light responsive candidate for treating wastewater.

Abstract
Reasonable design of heterojunction photocatalysts with high-quality interfacial coupling is an effective way to improve the photocatalytic activity of semiconductors. Herein, we successfully decorated Zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn2S4, ZIS) on perovskite Lanthanum ferrite (LaFeO3, LFO) with more active sites by a pre-hydrothermal combined post-calcination method, and constructed S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with a unique hollow corncob-like morphology for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production and tetracycline (TC) degradation. When the mass ratio of LFO is 35% and 15%, the ZIS/LFO photocatalyst exhibits the best hydrogen evolution rate and TC photodegradation performance, respectively. Notably, the optimum hydrogen production rate is 6 times that of pure ZIS with excellent cycling stability. The enhanced photoactivity can be explained by the hollow corncob-like morphology and the formed S-scheme heterojunction with close interface contact between ZIS and LFO, which significantly improves the spatial separation and migration efficiency of photoexcited carriers, while maintaining a high redox potential. Finally, it provides an effective support for the photocatalytic mechanism through calculation results of density functional theory. This work not only provides a novel construction strategy of photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and organic pollutant degradation, but also opens up a new insight for perovskite-modified S-scheme heterojunction.

Abstract
In this article, we propose a simple photochemical method to synthesize pure La2Ti2O7 films and La2Ti2O7 films doped with silver at 1.0, 3.0, and 5.0 mol%. After annealing the photo-deposited films at 900 °C, XRD, SEM, and XPS analyses showed the formation of a monoclinic La2Ti2O7 phase and the presence of Ag and AgO in doped samples. Photocatalytic tests for Congo red degradation demonstrated that pure La2Ti2O7 achieved 25.4% degradation, while doped samples reached a maximum of 92.7% degradation. Moreover, increasing silver doping on La2Ti2O7 films significantly reduced the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, indicating potential antibacterial properties. The enhanced photoactivity was attributed to the formation of a type I heterojunction between La2Ti2O7 and AgO, and a degradation mechanism was proposed based on Congo red degradation.

Abstract
Z-scheme Bi2MoO6/Bi5O7I heterojunction was constructed by an in situ solvothermal method, which was composed of Bi2MoO6 nanosheets growing on the surface of Bi5O7I microrods. The antibacterial activities under illumination towards Escherichia coli (E. coli) were investigated. The Bi2MoO6/Bi5O7I composites exhibited more outstanding antibacterial performance than pure Bi2MoO6 and Bi5O7I, and the E. coli (108 cfu/mL) was completely inactivated by BM/BI-3 under 90 min irradiation. Additionally, the experiment of adding scavengers revealed that h+, •O2- and •OH played an important role in the E. coli inactivation process. The E. coli cell membrane was damaged by the oxidation of h+, •O2- and •OH, and the intracellular components (K+, DNA) subsequently released, which ultimately triggered the apoptosis of the E. coli cell. The enhanced antibacterial performance of Bi2MoO6/Bi5O7I heterojunction is due to the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction with the effective charge transfer via the well-contacted interface of Bi2MoO6 and Bi5O7I. This study provides useful guidance on how to construct Bi5O7I-based heterojunction for water disinfection with abundant solar energy.

Abstract
Liquid exfoliation of bulk g-C3N5 was applied to synthesize g-C3N5 nanosheets. In order to characterize the samples, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), UV-Vis absorption spectra (UV-Vis), and photoluminescence spectra (PL) were examined. g-C3N5 nanosheets exhibited enhanced performance in the inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) with visible light irradiation relative to bulk g-C3N5 and promoted complete inactivation of E. coli within 120 min. h+ and •O2- were the principal reactive species in the antibacterial process. In the early stages, SOD and CAT played a defensive role in resisting oxidative damage of active species. With the prolonged light exposure time, the antioxidant protection system was overwhelmed leading to the destruction of the cell membrane. The leakage of cell contents such as K+, protein, and DNA caused bacterial apoptosis ultimately. The enhanced photocatalytic antibacterial performance of g-C3N5 nanosheets is ascribed to the stronger redox property by the upward shift of CB and downward shift of VB compared with bulk g-C3N5. On the other hand, larger specific surface area and better separation efficiency of photoinduced carriers are helpful to the improved photocatalytic performance. This study systematically revealed the inactivation process toward E. coli and expanded the application range of g-C3N5-based materials with abundant solar energy.

Abstract
Developing wide spectra-responsive photocatalysts has attracted considerable attention in the photocatalytic technology to achieve excellent catalytic activity. Ag3PO4, with strong response to light spectra shorter than 530 nm, shows extremely outstanding photocatalytic oxidation ability. Unfortunately, the photocorrosion of Ag3PO4 is still the biggest obstacle to its application. Herein, the La2Ti2O7 nanorod was used to anchor Ag3PO4 nanoparticles in this study, and a novel Z-Scheme La2Ti2O7/Ag3PO4 heterostructure composite was constructed. Remarkably, the composite showed strong responsive to most of the spectra in natural sunlight. The Ag0 formed in-situ acted as the recombination center of photogenerated carriers, which promoted their efficient separation and contributed to the improved photocatalytic performance of the heterostructure. When the mass ratio of Ag3PO4 in the La2Ti2O7/Ag3PO4 catalyst was 50%, the degradation rate constant of Rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO), chloroquine phosphate (CQ), tetracycline (TC), and phenol under natural sunlight irradiation were 0.5923, 0.4463, 0.1399, 0.0493, and 0.0096 min-1, respectively. Furthermore, the photocorrosion of the composite was greatly inhibited, 76.49% of CQ and 83.96% of RhB were still degraded after four cycles. Besides, the holes and O2•- played a significant role in RhB degradation, and it included multiple mechanisms of deethylation, deamination, decarboxylation, and cleavage of ring-structures. Moreover, the treated solution can also show safety to the water receiving environment. Overall, the synthesized Z-Scheme La2Ti2O7/Ag3PO4 composite exhibited immense potential for removing various organic pollutants through photocatalytic technology under natural sunlight irradiation.

Abstract
In this paper, a novel S-scheme CuS/Bi5O7I heterojunction was successfully constructed using a two-step approach comprising the alkaline hydrothermal method and the adsorption–deposition method, and it consisted of Bi5O7I microrods with CuS particles covering the surface. The photocatalytic antibacterial effects on Escherichia coli (E. coli) were systematically examined with visible light exposure. The results suggested that the 3%-CuS/Bi5O7I composite showed the optimal antibacterial activity, completely inactivating E. coli (5 × 108 cfu/mL) in 180 min of irradiation. Moreover, the bacterial inactivation process was scientifically described. •O2− and h+ were the major active species for the inactivation of the bacteria. In the early stages, SOD and CAT initiated the protection system to avoid the oxidative destruction of the active species. Unfortunately, the antioxidant protection system was overwhelmed thereafter, which led to the destruction of the cell membrane, as evidenced by the microstructure changes in E. coli cells. Subsequently, the leakage of intracellular components including K+, proteins, and DNA resulted in the unavoidable death of E. coli. Due to the construction of the S-scheme heterojunction, the CuS/Bi5O7I composite displayed the boosted visible light harvesting, the high-efficiency separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, and a great redox capacity, contributing to an outstanding photocatalytic disinfection performance. This work offers a new opportunity for S-scheme Bi5O7I-based heterojunctions with potential application in water disinfection.

Abstract
In this study, a facile hydrothermal method was employed to prepare Me-doped Bi2Fe4O9 (Me = Zn, Cu, Co, and Mn) as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. The characteristics of the Me-doped bismuth ferrites were investigated using various characterization instruments including SEM, TEM, FTIR and porosimeter indicating that the Me-doped Bi2Fe4O9 with nanosheet-like square orthorhombic structure was successfully obtained. The catalytic activity of various Me-doped Bi2Fe4O9 was compared and the results indicated that the Cu-doped Bi2Fe4O9 at 0.08 wt.% (denoted as BFCuO-0.08) possessed the greatest catalytic activity (kapp = 0.085 min-1) over other Me-doped Bi2Fe4O9 under the same condition. The synergistic interaction between Cu, Fe and oxygen vacancies are the key factors which enhanced the performance of Me-doped Bi2Fe4O9. The effects of catalyst loading, PMS dosage, and pH on CIP degradation were also investigated indicating that the performance increased with increasing catalyst loading, PMS dosage, and pH. Meanwhile, the dominant reactive oxygen species was identified using the chemical scavengers with SO4•-, •OH, and 1O2 playing a major role in CIP degradation. The performance of BFCuO-0.08 deteriorated in real water matrix (tap water, river water and secondary effluent) due to the presence of various water matrix species. Nevertheless, the BFCuO-0.08 catalyst possessed remarkable stability and can be reused for at least four successive cycles with >70% of CIP degradation efficiency indicating that it is a promising catalyst for antibiotics removal.

Abstract
An important target of photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) technology is the development of semiconductor-based photoelectrodes capable of absorbing solar energy (visible light) and promoting oxidation and reduction reactions. Bismuth oxyhalide-based materials BiOX (X = Cl, Br, and I) meet these requirements. Their crystalline structure, optical and electronic properties, and photocatalytic activity under visible light mean that these materials can be coupled to other semiconductors to develop novel heterostructures for photoelectrochemical degradation systems. This review provides a general overview of controlled BiOX powder synthesis methods, and discusses the optical and structural features of BiOX-based materials, focusing on heterojunction photoanodes. In addition, it summarizes the most recent applications in this field, particularly photoelectrochemical performance, experimental conditions and degradation efficiencies reported for some organic pollutants (e.g., pharmaceuticals, organic dyes, phenolic derivatives, etc.). Finally, as this review seeks to serve as a guide for the characteristics and various properties of these interesting semiconductors, it discusses future PEC-related challenges to explore.
