A novel and facile preparation of Superhydrophilic/Superoleophobic nanofilter using carbon nitride nanosheet for W/O emulsion separation

Robust and flexible polyester fiber membrane with under-liquid dual superlyophobicity for efficient on-demand oil-water separation

Functional materials with under-liquid dual superlyophobicity have generated a great deal of concern from researchers due to their switchable separation ability oil-water mixtures and emulsions. Conceptually, under-liquid dual superlyophobicity is a Cassie state achievable under-liquid through the synergy of an under-liquid double lyophobic surface and the construction of a highly rough surface. However, obtaining an under-liquid dual superlyophobic surface remains difficult due to its thermodynamic contradiction and complex surface composition. Herein, we successfully prepared a functional coating by modifying the mixture of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and nano-TiO2 with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) via a simple method, then obtained a polyester fiber membrane with under-liquid dual superlyophobicity by roll coating method. The surface wettability of the polyester (PET) membrane was altered, transforming it from the original under-water oleophobic/under-oil superhydrophilic state to the under-water superoleophobic/under-oil superhydrophobic state after coated. The resulting membrane was applied to separate oil and water on-demand. The coated PET membrane exhibited high separation efficiency (>99 %) and high separation flux, effectively separating immiscible oil-water systems as well as oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions. The coated PET membrane also demonstrated the ability to perform alternate separation of oil-water mixtures through wetting, washing, and rewetting cycles, with repeated processes up to 10 times without significant reduction in separation efficiency. Furthermore, compared with the previous works, our approach offers a simpler and more convenient method for constructing under-liquid dual superlyophobic surface, making it more suitable for continuous corporate production. This study may provide inspiration for the production and application in large-scale of under-liquid dual superlyophobic membranes.

Innovative Method for Water-in-Oil Emulsion Treatment Using Atmospheric Nonthermal-Plasma Technology

The field of plasma-liquid interactions is rapidly growing, with increasing publications across applications. While plasma's interactions with water and oil have been researched, there is a notable gap in the study of plasma-emulsion interactions and their practical applications. Investigating plasma-emulsion interactions offers a dual advantage, as demonstrated in this study, as it is applicable to both water/oil separation and emulsion stabilization processes. This study introduces a groundbreaking approach utilizing the fountain dielectric barrier discharge (FDBD) plasma reactor. The reactor exposes a model emulsion to different plasma gases, such as air, nitrogen, argon, and ammonia, along with varying parameters of plasma input voltage and treatment time. Consequently, due to demulsification, the emulsion segregates into distinct water and oil phases. Remarkably, the results demonstrate that short-term plasma treatment leads to the separation of over 99% of emulsified water. However, prolonged exposure to plasma for around 7 min reveals a decrease in the volume of free-separated water, implying the occurrence of stable emulsion formation instead of further demulsification. To optimize experimental conditions for compliance with regulatory requirements, the study employs the response surface methodology (RSM). Adapting pH and separation contours in three-dimensional (3D) RSM plots shows that achieving higher separation is likely associated with higher pH levels in air, nitrogen, and argon plasmas. Notably, the plasma treatment involving ammonia gas elevates the pH level and yields the highest degree of separation compared with air, nitrogen, or argon plasmas.

Versatile CO2-responsive Sponges Decorated with ZIF-8 for Bidirectional Separation of Oil/Water and Controllable Removal of Dyes

The complex wastewater containing water-soluble dyes and water-insoluble oils has given rise to significant environmental concerns that demand urgent remediation. Herein, a novel "smart" multifunctional sponge (ZIF-8@PMS) stepwise decorated with ZIF-8 nanoparticles and CO2-responsive copolymer (poly(2-(diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate-co-3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl acrylate-co-stearyl methacrylate) was successfully prepared for CO2 controllable oil/water separation and dyes removal. The results revealed that the sponge coated with CO2-responsive copolymer for three cycles (ZIF-8@PMS-3) exhibited optimal comprehensive properties. The ZIF-8@PMS-3 had excellent compressive-resilient characteristics and chemical stability. As expected, it displayed tunable wettability and charged state under the regulation of CO2. Based on these features, ZIF-8@PMS-3 presented highly efficient removal of oil and dyes, even for the dye-containing oil/water emulsions, via a synergistic combination of adsorption and separation methods. The adsorption capacity for oil and various organic solvents ranged from 21.3 to 50 g g-1. The maximum adsorption capacities toward anionic dyes: methyl orange with 1205.89 mg g-1 and methyl blue with 880.00 mg g-1 in the presence of CO2 through electrostatic interaction. In the absence of CO2, it achieved maximum adsorption capacities for cationic dyes, including malachite green with 1246.15 mg g-1 and rhodamine B with 203 mg g-1, primarily driven by π-π interactions. According to distinct adsorption mechanisms, ZIF-8@PMS-3 could selectively adsorb either anionic or cationic dyes by exploiting CO2 as a trigger. Furthermore, the separation efficiencies for both types of oil/water emulsions surpassed 99.9%, with respective fluxes of 1566.99 L m-2 h-1 (water-in-oil emulsion) and 310.37 L m-2 h-1 (oil-in-water emulsion). Additionally, the as-prepared sponges exhibited remarkable antibacterial properties and exceptional recyclability. Therefore, the ZIF-8@PMS-3 holds substantial promise for potential applications in practical industrial wastewater treatment.

Facile fabrication of Mxene coated metal mesh-based material for oil /water emulsion separation

The present study was set out to synthesize Mxene (Ti₃C₂Tx) and functionalized Mxene nanoparticles and fabricating Mxene coated stainless steel meshes using the dip-coating methodology to investigate the capability of Mxene nanoparticles in oil-water emulsion separation. O/W mixtures separation with extraordinary 100% of effectiveness and purity using designed grid was observed. Most specifically, Mxene fabricated mesh showed good resistance to corrosive solutions of HCl and NaOH and was used to separate O/W at harsh medium condition with a separation efficiency of more than after 96.0% replicated experiment, and its super-hydrophilicity persisted in spite of the air exposure condition, extreme fluids immersion, or abrasion. The XRD, FTIR, SEM, FESEM, AFM and DLS tests have been performed to characterize the Mxene coating and its effectiveness on the O/W separation. These analyzes confirm the fabricated tough super-hydrophilic stainless-steel mesh explored in this research can basically be utilized as a highly effective useful mesh for O/W fluid separation under different sever circumstances. The XRD pattern of the resulting powder shows a single phase formation of Mxene, the SEM and FESEM images confirms creation of coated mesh with approximately 30 µ pore size, AFM tests verify that structures (both in nm and µm sizes) formation with high RMS (Root Mean Square) roughness values of 0.18 µm and 0.22 µm for Mxene and carboxylic-Mxene coated mesh. The DLS tests prove the droplets size distribution of emulsion has been augmented after several O/W separation, which confirmed the coagulating mechanism of oil droplets once contacting with the Mxene and carboxylic Mxene coatings of the mesh.

Selective Fabrication of Robust and Multifunctional Super Nonwetting Surfaces by Diverse Modifications of Zirconia-Ceria Nanocomposites

The creation of surfaces with various super nonwetting properties is an ongoing challenge. We report diverse modifications of novel synthesized zirconia-ceria nanocomposites by different low surface energy agents to fabricate nanofluids capable of regulating surface wettability of mineral substrates to achieve selective superhydrophobic, superoleophobic-superhydrophilic, and superamphiphobic conditions. Surfaces treated with these nanofluids offer self-cleaning properties and effortless rolling-off behavior with sliding angles ≤7° for several liquids with surface tensions between 26 and 72.1 mN/m. The superamphiphobic nanofluid coating imparts nonstick properties to a solid surface whereby liquid drops can be effortlessly displaced on the coating with a near-zero tilt and conveniently lifted off using a needle tip, leaving no trace. Further, the superamphiphobic surface demonstrates good oil repellency toward ultralow surface tension liquids such as n-hexane and n-heptane. The superoleophobic-superhydrophilic surface repels oil droplets well regardless of whether it is in the air or underwater conditions. In addition, reaping the benefits of the ZrO₂-CeO₂ nanocomposites' photocatalysis feature, the superoleophobic-superhydrophilic coating exhibits self-cleaning ability by the degradation of color dyes. Modification of the wettability of substrates is carried out by a cost-effective and facile solution-immersion approach, which creates surfaces with hierarchical nano-submicron-scaled structures. The multipurpose coated surfaces have outstanding durability and mechanical stability. They also resist well high-temperature-high-pressure conditions, which will provide various practical applications in different fields, including the condensate banking removal in gas reservoirs or the separation of oil/water mixtures.
