Facile fabrication of tannic acid functionalized microcrystalline cellulose for selective recovery of Ga(III) and In(III) from potential leaching solution

Preparation of 4-Amino-3-hydrazino-1,2,4-triazol-5-thiol-Modified Graphene Oxide and Its Greatly Enhanced Selective Adsorption of Gallium in Aqueous Solution

Efficient recovery of gallium (Ga) from vanadium slag processing residue (VSPR) solution is of great significance for environmental protection and resource utilization, but improving its selective adsorption against the coexisting Sc3+ and In3+ is still challenging. Herein, a novel adsorbent consisting of 4-amino-3-hydrazino-1,2,4-triazol-5-thiol (AHTZT)-modified graphene oxide (GO-AHTZT) was successfully synthesized that exhibits a higher adsorption selectivity for Ga3+ in VSPR solution with coexisting Sc3+ and In3+. Under optimal conditions, the adsorption capacity of GO-AHTZT for Ga3+ can reach 23.92 mg g-1, which is 4.9 and 12.6 times higher than that for Sc3+ (4.87 mg g-1) and In3+ (1.90 mg g-1) adsorption, indicating the excellent anti-interference ability of GO-AHTZT against Sc3+ and In3+. The process and mechanism of Ga3+ adsorption onto GO-AHTZT was also studied and discussed in detail. By measuring the adsorption process and by characterizing the adsorbent before and after adsorption, we demonstrate that the selective interaction between the Ga3+- and N-containing groups in AHTZT is the main reason for the improved adsorption selectivity. This work opens up an avenue for the design and synthesis of highly selective adsorbents for Ga3+ in complex VSPR solutions.

Adsorbents prepared from epoxy-based porous materials of microcrystalline cellulose for excellent adsorption of anionic and cationic dyes

It reported a porous material prepared from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), to achieve rapid preparation of adsorbents. The porous material was characterized by several tools including 1H NMR, FTIR, XPS, and SEM. Two adsorbents were prepared and subjected to adsorption experiments. Dye adsorption experiments show that the adsorption driving is electrostatic interactions and the process is chemisorption. The maximum capacity of Microcrystalline cellulose-g-Poly (glycidyl methacrylate)-Tannins (MPT) reached 191.3 (Methylene blue), 123.7 mg g-1 (Rhodamine B), and Microcrystalline cellulose-g-Poly (glycidyl methacrylate)-Lysine (MPL) attained 425.8 (Methylene blue), 480.7 mg g-1 (Methyl orange). The results were followed the pseudo-second-order (PSO) and agreed with the Langmuir fit model. Adsorption-desorption cycling experiments further indicate that the adsorbent possesses outstanding reproducibility. At last, epoxidized bio-porous materials are positive in the preparation of dye adsorbents with critical adsorption properties.

Solid-phase extraction and separation of indium with P2O4-UiO-66-MOFs (di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid-UiO-66-metal-organic frameworks)

Compared with the traditional liquid-liquid extraction method, solid-phase extraction agents are of great significance for the recovery of indium metal due to their convenience, free of organic solvents, and fully exposed activity. In this study, P₂O₄ (di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid) was chemically modified by using UiO-66 to form the solid-phase extraction agent P₂O₄-UiO-66-MOFs (di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid-UiO-66-metal-organic frameworks) to adsorb In(III). The results show that the Zr of UiO-66 bonds with the P-OH of P₂O₄ to form a composite P₂O₄-UiO-66-MOF, which was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The adsorption process of indium on P₂O₄-UiO-66-MOFs followed pseudo first-order kinetics, and the adsorption isotherms fit the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The adsorption capabilities can reach 192.8 mg/g. After five consecutive cycles of adsorption-desorption-regeneration, the indium adsorption capacity by P₂O₄-UiO-66-MOFs remained above 99%. The adsorption mechanism analysis showed that the P=O and P-OH of P₂O₄ molecules coated on the surface of P₂O₄-UiO-66-MOFs participated in the adsorption reaction of indium. In this paper, the extractant P₂O₄ was modified into solid P₂O₄-UiO-66-MOFs for the first time. This work provides a new idea for the development of solid-phase extractants for the recovery of indium.

Recent Developments in Chemical Derivatization of Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC): Pre-Treatments, Functionalization, and Applications

Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) is an isolated, colloidal crystalline portion of cellulose fibers, and it is a valuable alternative to non-renewable fossil-based materials. It is used for a large plethora of different fields, such as composites, food applications, pharmaceutical and medical developments, and cosmetic and material industries. The interest of MCC has also been driven by its economic value. In the last decade, particular attention has been driven to the functionalization of its hydroxyl groups to expand the field of applications of such biopolymer. Herein, we report and describe several pre-treatment methods that have been developed to increase the accessibility of MCC by breaking its dense structure allowing further functionalization. This review also collects the results that have appeared in the literature during the last two decades on the utilization of functionalized MCC as adsorbents (dyes, heavy metals, and carbon dioxide), flame retardants, reinforcing agents, energetic materials, such as azide- and azidodeoxy-modified, and nitrate-based cellulose and biomedical applications.

Selective and Effective Gold Recovery from Printed Circuit Boards and Gold Slag Using Amino-Acid-Functionalized Cellulose Microspheres

The hydrometallurgical recovery of gold from electronic waste and gold slag is a hot research topic. To develop a cost-effective and environmentally friendly adsorbent for gold recovery, four types of amino-acid (arginine, histidine, methionine, and cysteine)-functionalized cellulose microspheres were prepared via a radiation technique. The adsorption performance of the amino acid resins toward Au(III) ions was systematically investigated by batch experiments. The amino acid resins could absorb Au(III) ions at a wide pH range. The adsorption process was followed by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity was calculated as 396.83 mg/g, 769.23 mg/g, 549.45 mg/g, and 636.94 mg/g for ArgR, HisR, MetR, and CysR, respectively. The amino acid resins could effectively and selectively recover trace Au(III) ions from the leaching solutions of printed circuit board and gold slag waste. Lastly, the mechanism underlying amino acid resin's Au(III) ion recovery capability was investigated by FTIR, XRD, and XPS analyses. This work describes a series of cost-effective gold adsorbents with excellent selectivity and adsorption capacity to boost their practical application.
