Abstract
Gallium and indium, metals present in light-emitting diode (LED) lighting technology, can be effectively recovered from aqueous solutions by sorption. For this purpose, carbonaceous materials, such as activated carbon, or low-cost biosorbents as beer bagasse, spent coffee grounds or peanut shells, and a low-cost zeolite as chabazite, were characterized by BET, FTIR, XRD, and SEM analysis prior use. Protonated chabazite, with high surface area (505 m2/g) and a Si/Al molar ratio of 3.4, showed high sorption capacities for gallium (56 mg/g) and indium (92 mg/g), which is 10 to 30 times higher than those of our carbonaceous materials (T = 298 K, pH < 3, dosage = 1 g/L). Sorption experiments with both metals in solution showed a competitive effect between gallium and indium for the sorption sites of the chabazite, showing more affinity toward gallium than indium. Ga3+sorbed/In3+sorbed molar ratio above 2 was achieved for the same initial concentration of both metals, increasing to almost 3 when the initial gallium concentration increased, which was appropriate since gallium concentration tends to be higher in LED chips. However, the sorption capacity for both metals was always around 0.35 mmol Ga + In/g. The selectivity of the chabazite was conditioned by different behavior of both metals in aqueous solution at the sorption pH (below 3.5) being the predominant species in solution Ga(OH)2+ for gallium and In3+ for indium. Sorption with protonated chabazite can be used in the treatment of spent LEDs leachate for the dual purpose of water purification and selective metal separation.

Abstract
Herein, in order to extract Ga3+ from acid fly ash leaching, we propose a functionalized Ti3C2Tx-based MXene composite aerogel adsorbent for Ga3+ adsorption. The prepared physicochemical dual-crosslinking network aerogel MPHG-40 possesses good Ga3+ adsorption performance (132.52 mg g-1) at the pH of 3 and Ga3+ initial concentration of 50 mg L-1 within 6 h. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, the material shows good mass retention and a 95.65 % retention of its initial adsorption capacity, compared to most reported adsorbents. The optimized adsorbent realized good selective adsorption of Ga3+ against Cu2+, Zn2+, Fe3+, and Al3+ in a simulated acid fly ash leaching with the selective coefficient of 8.63, 96.10, 4.49, and 28.30, respectively. The adsorption may comply with a combined mechanism of physical adsorption, electrostatic interactions, ion-exchange mechanism, and ligand chelation, dominated by chemical adsorption, as identified by theoretical calculations based on density functional theory and experimental data. The three-dimensional solid adsorbent constructed in this study provides a new strategy for selective adsorption of Ga3+, making it possible to be applied to solid waste utilization of fly ash.

Abstract
The situation of discharging a large amount of dyes from the textile industries has caused many adverse effects on human health and the ecosystems. Emerging bio-nanomaterials represent a new trend in efficient dye removal in aqueous media. Herein, we mention that MgFe2O4 bioprepared using gerbera extract has been successfully used to adsorb malachite green (MG) in water. A comparison was made to determine the dye removal efficiency between biogenic MgFe2O4 (MFOB) and chemical MgFe2O4 (MFOC). The spherical MFOB material exhibited a large surface area of 85.0 m2 g-1 and high crystallinity. The obtained outcomes showed that the highest adsorption capacity of MG dye was 584.49 mg g-1 at a MFOB dose of 0.05 g L-1 and MG concentration of 10 mg L-1. Higher correlation coefficients in the Langmuir isotherm suggested monolayer adsorption of MG. The Box-Behnken design and response surface method were established to optimize MG removal percentage under the conditions, i.e., initial MG concentration (10-30 mg L-1), adsorbent dose (0.02-0.08 g L-1), and pH of dye solution (6-8). MFOB had good reusability with high removal efficiencies after three continuous cycles. Post reuse, this adsorbent still showed excellent stability through the verification of their structural properties in comparison with fresh MFOB, showing potential for practical applications.

Abstract
Peptides are recognized as promising adsorbents in metal selective recovery. In this study, the designed gallium-binding peptide H6GaBP was immobilized by the polysaccharide polymer sodium alginate (SA) for gallium recovery. The synthesized H6GaBP@SA microspheres exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 127.4 mg/g and demonstrated high selectivity for gallium at lower pH values. The adsorption process aligned well with the pseudo-second-order equation and Langmuir model. To elucidate the adsorption mechanism, a comprehensive characterization including molecular docking, scanning electron microscope coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), were conducted. These analyses revealed that gallium ions were initially adsorbed through electrostatic interaction by H6GaBP@SA, followed by a cation exchange reaction between Ga(OH)2+ and Ca2+, as well as coordination between gallium and histidine residues on the peptide. Moreover, the H6GaBP@SA exhibited improved thermal stability compared to sole sodium alginate microspheres, and the coordination of gallium with peptides can also defer the decomposition rate of the adsorbents. Compared to other adsorbents, the peptide-encapsulated hydrogel microspheres exhibited superior gallium selectivity and improved adsorption capacity, offering an environmentally friendly option for gallium recovery.

Abstract
The development of antibiotic resistance and the onset of diverse forms of cancer necessitate the utilization of innovative multifunctional biocompatible materials. The synthesis of metal and metalloid nanoparticles through eco-friendly means demonstrates promising potential in therapeutic and diagnostic domains. Among these materials, Tellurium (Te) exhibits exceptional characteristics and finds application in numerous fields; nevertheless, its usage in biological applications has been somewhat limited, primarily due to its inherent toxicity. Furthermore, nanomaterials developed from Te have not garnered adequate research attention. Conversely, nanomaterials fashioned using biomolecules augment their biological efficacy and applicability. Therefore, the present work focuses on synthesizing the tellurium nanoparticles (Te NPs) using the antioxidant molecule gallic acid (GA) and evaluating their biological activity and toxicity for the first time. The study evidenced that GA-Te NPs are spherical and monodispersed, with an average size of 19.74 ± 5.3 nm. XRD analysis confirmed a hexagonal crystalline structure for GA-Te NPs, and FTIR analysis evidenced the capping of GA on Te NPs. GA-Te NPs (MIC: 1.56 μg/mL) strongly reduce the growth and biofilm formation of S. aureus, E. coli, and S. enterica. Additionally, GA-Te NPs at a concentration of 50 μg/mL cause a significant level of toxicity in BT474 breast cancer cells but not in NIH3T3 cells. Unexpectedly, GA-Te NPs at concentrations <250 μg/mL do not cause hemolysis in red blood cells (RBC) Besides, the way of utilizing the lower concentrations of therapeutics could result in ecological safety. Therefore, the study concludes that GA-Te NPs could be used as potential multifunctional agents.

Abstract
Adsorption materials have demonstrated huge potential in treating sewage; however, it is a great challenge to fabricate an adsorbent effectively adsorbing multiple dyestuffs and heavy metal ions simultaneously. Here, a magnetic core@shell Fe3O4@polypyrrole@sodium dodecyl sulfate (Fe3O4@PPy@SDS) composite is prepared through the combination of a hydrothermal method, an in situ polymerization method, and modification, exhibiting enhanced selective removal of five dyestuffs (methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), rhodamine B (RhB), Congo red (CR), acid red 1 (AR1)), and heavy metal ions (Mn(VII)). The effects of adsorbent type, time, initial concentration of the adsorbate, and temperature on adsorption performances are investigated in detail. Kinetics and isotherm studies indicate that all adsorption processes are more in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model, the diffusion behavior is controlled by intraparticle diffusion and liquid film diffusion, and research of thermodynamics reveals a spontaneous endothermic behavior. The removal efficiency after five desorption-adsorption cycles can still reach more than 90%. The prepared Fe3O4@PPy@SDS composite is an efficient and promising renewable adsorbent for the treatment of dyestuffs and Mn(VII), exhibiting a wide range of applications in the field of adsorption.

Abstract
Biological reduction of selenium oxyanions is widely used for selenium removal from wastewater. The process is, however, limited by the availability of a suitable, efficient and low cost electron donor. In this study, selenite and selenate reduction by waste activated sludge using hydrogen as the electron donor was investigated. Both selenite and selenate (80 mg/L) were completely removed using H2 within 8 days of incubation. In the presence of sulfate in the medium, the Se removal efficiency decreased to 77.8-95.4% (for selenite) and 88.2-99.4% (for selenate) at different temperatures and initial sulfate concentrations. Thermophilic conditions (50 °C) were better suited for both selenite and selenate reduction using H2 as electron donor with a 0.8-13.5% increase in overall Se removal. Similarly, sulfate reduction also increased from 69.1- 88% at 30 °C to 72-94.6% at 50 °C. Most of the H2 utilized was diverted towards Se and sulfate reduction with minimal production of byproducts such as methane (<0.32 mM) or volatile fatty acids (<0.92 mg/L). The elemental Se produced from selenite and selenate reduction ranged between 33.9 and 52.1 mg/L. The elemental selenium nanoparticles produced as a result of selenite and selenate reduction were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) spectroscopy. Furthermore, characterization of the biomass using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and excitation emission matrix (EEM) spectra of the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by the waste activated sludge were performed to elucidate the mechanism of selenium oxyanion reduction to elemental selenium nanoparticles.

Abstract
The depletion of primary ores, the environmental concerns related to mining activities, and the need to promote circular economy has drawn attention to the recycling of metallic compounds. Bio-based technologies are suitable for metal recovery, as they operate under mild conditions (ambient temperature and pressure) and are ideal for treating low-concentration waters. This study compared the effectiveness of adsorption and precipitation for the removal and recovery of gallium, germanium and zinc. Adsorption of the metallic ions on elemental forms of sulfur (S0), selenium (Se0) and tellurium (Te0), both of chemical and biological sources, was tested. Biosorption onto elemental forms of S0bio, Se0bio and Te0bio effectively removed Ga and Zn. The highest removal efficiency (ղ) was obtained for Ga onto the adsorbent Te0bio (69 ± 0.4%), with an adsorption capacity (q) of 74 mg Ga (g Te0bio)-1, followed by Zn (ղ = 40 ± 0.7%) with 43 mg Zn (g Te0bio)-1. Precipitation with chemical and biogenic sulfide at different metal to sulfide (Me/S) ratios was also assessed. Biologically produced sulfide was more efficient for Ga and Zn compared to chemical sulfide. Precipitation with biogenic sulfide was efficient for the removal of Ga (ղ = 59.9 ± 2.6%) and Zn (ղ = 44.2 ± 3.0%). The lowest ratio between metal to sulfide (Me/S = 0.2) achieved higher zinc removal efficiencies, whereas gallium removal was more efficient at Me/S = 1.5. None of the tested methods allowed for recovery of Ge. Biosorption and bioprecipitation gave nevertheless high removal and recovery of Ga and Zn.
