Atomic Fe sites embedded within carbon nanotubes for the efficient photodegradation of multiple tetracyclines

Low concentration of peroxymonosulfate coupled with visible light triggers oxygen reactive species generation over constructed Bi25FeO40/BiOCl Z-scheme heterojunction for various tetracycline antibiotics removal

Photocatalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation systems demonstrate significant potential and promising prospects through the interconnection of photocatalytic and PMS oxidation for simultaneously achieving efficient pollutant removal and reduction of PMS dosage, which prevents resource wastage and secondary pollution. In this study, a Z-scheme Bi25FeO40/BiOCl (BOFC) heterojunction was constructed to carry out the photocatalytic PMS oxidation process for tetracyclines (TCs) pollutants at low PMS concentrations (0.08 mM). The photocatalytic PMS oxidation rate of Bi25FeO40/BiOCl composites for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and doxycycline (DXC) reaches 86.6%, 83.6%, 86.7%, and 88.0% within 120 min. Simultaneously, the BOFC/PMS system under visible light (Vis) equally displayed the practical application prospects for the solo and mixed simulated TCs antibiotics wastewater. Based on the electron spin resonance (ESR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) valence band spectrum, a Z-scheme electron migration pathway was proposed to elucidate the mechanism underlying the performance enhancement of BOFC composites. Bi25FeO40 in BOFC composites can serve as active site for activating PMS by the formation of Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle. Toxicity estimation software tool (T.E.S.T.) and mung beans planting experiment demonstrates that BOFC/PMS/Vis system can reduce toxicity of TCs wastewater. Therefore, BOFC/PMS/Vis system achieves efficient examination in different water environments and efficient utilization of PMS, which displays a scientific reference for achieving environmentally-friendly and resource-saving handling processes.

Singlet Oxygen Formation Mechanism for the H2O2-Based Fenton-like Reaction Catalyzed by the Carbon Nitride Homojunction

The singlet oxygen (1O2) oxidation process activated by metal-free catalysts has recently attracted considerable attention for organic pollutant degradation; however, the 1O2 formation remains controversial. Simultaneously, the catalytic activity of the metal-free catalyst limits the practical application. In this study, carbon nitride (HCCN) containing an intramolecular homojunction, a kind of metal-free catalyst, exhibits excellent activity compared to g-C3N4 (CN) and crystalline carbon nitride (HCN) for tetracycline hydrochloride degradation through the H2O2-based Fenton-like reaction. The rate constant for HCCN increased about 16.1 and 8.9 times than that of CN and HCN, respectively. The activity of HCCN was enhanced, and the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) changed from hydroxyl radicals (•OH) to 1O2 with an increase in pH from 4.5 to 11.5. A novel formation pathway of 1O2 was revealed. This result is different from the normal reference, in which •OH is always the primary ROS in the H2O2-based Fenton-like reaction. This study may provide a possible strategy for the investigation on the nonradical oxidation process in the Fenton-like reaction.

A dual-photoelectrode fuel cell-driven self-powered aptasensor based on the 1D/2D In2S3/MoS2@Fe-CNTs heterojunction for the ultrasensitive detection of Staphylococcus aureus

A novel dual-electrode photo-fuel cell (PFC)-driven self-powered aptasensor was manufactured for the sensitive and selective detection of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) using the one-dimensional (1D)/2D Schottky heterojunction comprising bimetallic indium/molybdenum sulfide nanosheets and iron-doped carbon nanotube (Fe-CNT) (denoted as In₂S₃/MoS₂@Fe-CNTs) as the photocathode. Given the generation of a robust interface at In₂S₃/MoS₂ and Fe-CNTs, the charge separation and transfer ability of photoexcited electron-hole pairs were enforced, thus improving the output voltage of the assembled PFC. In addition, the numerous active sites of the 1D/2D In₂S₃/MoS₂@Fe-CNTs Schottky heterojunction enabled the immobilization of large amounts of aptamer. Accordingly, the proposed PFC-driven self-powered aptasensor exhibited a wide linear range in 10-1 × 10⁷ CFU mL^-1 with a detection limit of 1.2 CFU mL^-1 toward S. aureus. High selectivity, excellent reproducibility, good stability, and acceptable regenerability, as well as great potential practicality, were also achieved for the detection of S. aureus using the developed PFC-driven self-powered aptasensor. This work not only provides a new photoactive material based on a robust 1D/2D Schottky heterojunction, but also constructs a novel PFC-based self-powered aptasensing strategy based on dual-photoelectrodes and with satisfactory performance for the detection of foodborne pathogens in diverse environments.

Recent Advances in Carbon-Based Materials for Adsorptive and Photocatalytic Antibiotic Removal

Antibiotics have been a primary environmental concern due to their widespread dispersion, harmful bioaccumulation, and resistance to mineralization. Unfortunately, typical processes in wastewater treatment plants are insufficient for complete antibiotic removal, and their derivatives in effluent can pose a threat to human health and aquatic communities. Adsorption and photocatalysis are proven to be the most commonly used and promising tertiary treatment methods. Carbon-based materials, especially those based on graphene, carbon nanotube, biochar, and hierarchical porous carbon, have attracted much attention in antibiotic removal as green adsorbents and photocatalysts because of their availability, unique pore structures, and superior physicochemical properties. This review provides an overview of the characteristics of the four most commonly used carbonaceous materials and their applications in antibiotic removal via adsorption and photodegradation, and the preparation of carbonaceous materials and remediation properties regarding target contaminants are clarified. Meanwhile, the fundamental adsorption and photodegradation mechanisms and influencing factors are summarized. Finally, existing problems and future research needs are put forward. This work is expected to inspire subsequent research in carbon-based adsorbent and photocatalyst design, particularly for antibiotics removal.

A Flexible and Weavable Lignocellulose-Based Photocatalyst Supported by Natural Three-Dimensional Porous Juncus effusus for Highly Efficient Degradation of Environmental Contaminants

Lignocellulosic biomass is a potential biotemplate for disposing the burden of the uncontrollable accumulation of environmental contaminants disrupting the hydrophytic ecosystems. Herein, an efficient solar-driven catalyst was prepared using a natural three-dimensional (3D) porous lignocellulose-based Juncus effusus (JE) fiber for wastewater treatment. Owing to the exquisite 3D microstructure and abundant hydroxyl groups, the two-dimensional lamellar graphitic carbon nitride/graphene oxide (g-C₃N₄/GO) nanocomposites were successfully synthesized and decorated on the carboxymethylated JE fiber via the electrostatic self-assembly method. The as-prepared g-C₃N₄/GO-JE (CNG-JE) photocatalyst exhibits excellent light absorption efficiency and a superior ability to accelerate photogenerated electron migration. The outstanding adsorption performance toward pollutants also contributes to the photodegradation property of CNG-JE, showing highly efficient degradation of C.I. Reactive Red 120 (99.8%), C.I. Acid Yellow 11 (99.8%), methylene blue (99.4%), Cr(VI) (98.8%), and tetracycline (87.2%). Most importantly, the lignocellulose-based CNG-JE fibers could be fabricated into a photocatalyst textile due to their flexible and weavable properties. In actual application, the CNG-JE textile can be reused for at least five cycles under the sun, demonstrating that the flexible CNG-JE textile is practical and recyclable. This study may provide a platform for constructing efficient, flexible, and weavable biomass-based porous materials for cost-effective and sustainable catalytic applications.
