Three-dimensional biomimetic superhydrophobic nickel sponge without chemical modifications for efficient oil/water separation

Hierarchical 0D CuO Wrapped by Petal-like 2D ZnO: A Strategic Approach of Superhydrophobic Melamine Sponge toward Wastewater Treatment

In addressing the pressing environmental challenges posed by frequent oil spills, this work presents a novel approach of synthesizing a superhydrophobic three-dimensional (3D) porous melamine sponge (MS). CuO and ZnO nanoparticles were grown on the MS via a hydrothermal method to create MS/CuO/ZnO with multiscale hierarchical nanostructures. The resulting material exhibited a stable water contact angle of 155° through various tests. MS/CuO/ZnO demonstrated exceptional oil absorption capacities (40-145 g/g and 0.83-0.99 mL.cm-3), surpassing 98% efficiency in oil separation, and retained reusability for 10 cycles. Impressively, the sponge achieved successful separation of oil/water emulsions with a permeation flux of 14870 L m-2 h-1. The composite sponge, distinguished by its high photodegradation ability, can degrade both water- and oil-targeted pollutants under visible light irradiation from light-emitting diode (LED). With its remarkable attributes including superior oil absorption, excellent oil/water separation, mechanical resistance, and excellent photocatalytic ability, it exhibits considerable potential for applications in both wastewater treatment and large-scale marine oil spill response. The easily prepared MS/CuO/ZnO emerges as a versatile solution capable of addressing pressing challenges and marking a significant leap toward sustainable and impactful environmental remediation.

TDA/rGO@WS with Joule heat and photothermal synergistic effect: A promising adsorption material for all-weather recovery of viscous oil spills at sea

Oil spills are a global environmental protection challenge, and traditional adsorption materials have poor effect on low temperature and high viscosity marine oil spills. This article reports composite adsorption materials TDA/rGO@WS for viscous oil spills: loaded with rGO/TDA coating on a commercial biomass wood pulp sponge (WS), achieving Joule heating, photothermal effect and hydrophobic modification. The results showed that the TDA/rGO@WS has good photothermal conversion ability and Joule heating ability, and the temperature increased to 83.7 °C and 148 °C, respectively, under simulated solar irradiation and additional voltage at room temperature. The efficiency of adsorption at a low temperature of 5 °C increased by 22.41% at 1 sun and by 51.53% at 10 V. Temperature effectively reduced the viscosity of the offshore oil spill and ensures the efficient adsorption of oil spills at low temperatures promoted. The TDA/rGO@WS also showed good hydrophobicity (WCA=129°), excellent efficiency of water-oil separation (99.53%) and good adsorption capacity (9.4-13.68 g/g) for marine fuel oils. TDA/rGO@WS effectively solves the problem of cleaning up high-viscosity oil spills from ships in winter and polar waters, and proposes a new strategy for all-weather efficient treatment of oil spills at sea.

Application of graphene aerogels in oil spill recovery: A review

Oil spills have long been a serious threat to marine environment. Physical recovery is the safest and most efficient method in the emergency disposal of offshore oil spill. Graphene aerogel (GA) has a wide application prospect in offshore oil spill emergency recovery and disposal given its unique structural characteristics. In this article, the preparation methods of GA adsorbent are summarized. On this basis, in the background of the application of offshore oil spill recovery, the related properties and targeted modification schemes of GA, such as adsorption, mechanical, and magnetic properties, as well as photothermal conversion properties for disposal of oil spills with high viscosity, are discussed. The Joule heating/photothermal conversion scheme can improve the recovery efficiency of offshore high viscosity oil spills, and adding metal composite materials can increase the magnetic performance and surface roughness of GA and facilitate positioning and recovery after offshore oil spills disposal. The challenges and prospects of modification research are also highlighted, and guidance for further optimizing the performance of GA in offshore oil spill recovery is provided.

Biomimetic superhydrophobic metal/nonmetal surface manufactured by etching methods: A mini review

As an emerging fringe science, bionics integrates the understanding of nature, imitation of nature, and surpassing nature in one aspect, and it organically combines the synergistic complementarity of function and structure–function integrated materials which is of great scientific interest. By imitating the microstructure of a natural biological surface, the bionic superhydrophobic surface prepared by human beings has the properties of self-cleaning, anti-icing, water collection, anti-corrosion and oil–water separation, and the preparation research methods are increasing. The preparation methods of superhydrophobic surface include vapor deposition, etching modification, sol–gel, template, electrostatic spinning, and electrostatic spraying, which can be applied to fields such as medical care, military industry, ship industry, and textile. The etching modification method can directly modify the substrate, so there is no need to worry about the adhesion between the coating and the substrate. The most obvious advantage of this method is that the obtained superhydrophobic surface is integrated with the substrate and has good stability and corrosion resistance. In this article, the different preparation methods of bionic superhydrophobic materials were summarized, especially the etching modification methods, we discussed the detailed classification, advantages, and disadvantages of these methods, and the future development direction of the field was prospected.
