Solar light induced photocatalytic process for reduction of hexavalent chromium and degradation of tetracycline and methylene blue by heterostructures made of SnS2 nanoplates surface modified by ZnWO4 nanorods

Co-doped bismuth vanadate/zinc tungstate heterojunction with dual internal electric fields for efficient photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide

Enhanced carriers separation on photocatalysts is crucial for improving photocatalytic activity. In this paper, the Co-doped BiVO4/ZnWO4 S-scheme heterojunctions were constructed to induce double internal electric fields (IEFs) for enhancing charges separation and transfer for efficient photocatalytic reduction of CO2. The photocatalytic CO2 reduction efficiencies of the heterojunctions were significantly enhanced as compared with the counterparts. The optimized Co-doped BiVO4/ZnWO4 exhibited the highest CO yield of 138.4 μmol·g-1·h-1, which were 86.5 and 1.4 folds of the BiVO4 and Co-doped BiVO4. Results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron spin resonance (ESR), and work function demonstrated that charge transfer path of Co-doped BiVO4/ZnWO4 conformed to S-scheme heterojunction mechanism. The kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the differential charge distributions confirmed the existence of double IEFs, which accelerated carrier separation and improved CO2 adsorption and activation. In addition, in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ISFT-IR) revealed that HCOO- was the major intermediate during the CO2 reaction. This study provides a feasible means to develop composite photocatalysts with dual IEFs for effective photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Novel Ag@NH2-UiO-66(Zr) photocatalyst with controllable charge transfer pathways for efficient Cr(VI) remediation

Rational fabrication of core-shell photocatalysts to hamper the charge recombination is extraordinarily essential to enhance photocatalytic activity. In this work, core-shell Ag@NH2-UiO-66 (Ag@NU) Schottky heterojunctions with low Ag content (1 wt%) were constructed by a two-step solvothermal method and adopted for Cr(VI) reduction under LED light. Typically, the one with the Ag: NH2-UiO-66 mass ratio (1 : 100) led to 100% Cr(VI) removal within 1 h, superior to bare NH2-UiO-66 and Ag/NH2-UiO-66 (Ag was directly decorated on NH2-UiO-66 surface). The enhanced photocatalytic activity was related to the migration of the electrons on the CB of NH2-UiO-66 to Ag NPs through a Schottky barrier, and thus the undesired charge carriers recombination was avoided. This result was also evidenced by Density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The computational simulations indicate that the introduction of Ag effectively narrowed the band gap of NH2-UiO-66, facilitating the transfer of photo-generated electrons, expanding the light absorption area, and significantly enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. Most importantly, such a core-shell structure can inhibit the formation of •O2-, letting the direct Cr(VI) reduction by photo-excited e-. In addition, this structure can also protect Ag from being oxidized by O2. Ten cyclic tests evidenced the Ag@NU had excellent chemical and structural stability. This research offers a novel strategy for regulating the Cr(VI) reduction by establishing core-shell photocatalytic materials.

Enhanced photocatalytic performance of SnS2 under visible light irradiation: strategies and future perspectives

Tin(II) sulfide (SnS2) has emerged as a promising candidate for visible light photocatalytic materials. As a member of the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) family, SnS2 features a band gap of approximately 2.20 eV and a layered structure, rendering it suitable for visible light activation with a high specific surface area. However, the application of SnS2 as a visible light photocatalyst still requires improvement, particularly in addressing the high recombination of electrons and holes, as well as the poor selectivity inherent in its perfect crystal structure. Therefore, ongoing research focuses on strategies to enhance the photocatalytic performance of SnS2. In this comprehensive review, we analyze recent advances and promising strategies for improving the photocatalytic performance of SnS2. Various successful approaches have been reported, including controlling the reactive facets of SnS2, inducing defects in the crystal structure, manipulating morphologies, depositing noble metals, and forming heterostructures. We provide a detailed understanding of these phenomena and the preparation techniques involved, as well as future considerations for exploring new science in SnS2 photocatalysis and optimizing performance.

Zn-Doped MnCO3/CS Composite Photocatalyst for Visible-Light-Driven Decomposition of Organic Pollutants

Zn-doped MnCO3/carbon sphere (Zn-doped MnCO3/CS) composites were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal procedure. Among various samples (ZM-50, ZM-05, and ZMC-0), the ternary Zn-doped MnCO3/CS (ZMC-2) catalyst demonstrated excellent visible light-induced photocatalytic activity. This improvement comes from the Zn addition and the conductive CS, which facilitate electron movement and charge transport. The catalyst exhibited efficient degradation of methylene blue (MB) over a wide pH range, achieving a removal efficiency of 99.6% under visible light. Radical trapping experiments suggested that •OH and •O2- played essential roles in the mechanism of organic pollutant degradation. Moreover, the catalyst maintained good degradation performance after five cycles. This study offers valuable perspectives into the fabrication of carbon-based composites with promising photocatalytic activity.

2D/2D Bi2MoO6/CoAl LDH S-scheme heterojunction for enhanced removal of tetracycline: Performance, toxicity, and mechanism

In this paper, the two-dimensional (2D) layered CoAl LDH (CoAl) was coupled with Bi2MoO6 (BMO) nanoplate and used for tetracycline (TC) degradation. Based on the results of UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectrum (UV-vis DRS), Motty-Schottky curves, and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), a novel 2D/2D Bi2MoO6/CoAl LDH S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was built. The photodegradation rate constant of TC by the optimized sample BMO/CoAl30 was 3.637 × 10-2 min-1, which was 1.26 times and 4.01 times higher than that of Bi2MoO6 and CoAl LDH, respectively. The favorable photocatalytic performance of the heterojunction was attributed to the increased interfacial contact area of the 2D/2D structure. Besides, the transfer of photogenerated electrons from Bi2MoO6 to CoAl LDH under the effect of the built-in electric field (BIEF) reduced the recombination of photogenerated carriers and further improved the photocatalytic performance. The reactive species of h+, ·O2-, and 1O2 exhibited critical roles to degrade TC molecules by reactive radicals capture experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests. The intermediate products of TC degradation and toxicity of intermediates were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (LC-MS) and Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T). Additionally, the BMO/CoAl composite photocatalysts showed high stability and environmental tolerance during the testing of cycles and environmental impacts with various water sources, organic contaminants, initial pH, and inorganic ions. This work provides a new protocol for designing and constructing novel 2D/2D S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for wastewater treatment.

Graphene-based strontium niobate-zinc oxide heterojunction photocatalyst for effective reduction of hexavalent chromium

A hydrothermal technique was employed to synthesize a Sr₂Nb₂O₇-rGO-ZnO (SNRZ) ternary nanocatalyst, in which ZnO and Sr₂Nb₂O₇ were deposited on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets. The surface morphologies, optical properties, and chemical states, of the photocatalysts were characterized to understand their properties. The SNRZ ternary photocatalyst was superior over the reduction of Cr (VI) to harmless Cr (III) compared to the efficiencies obtained using bare, binary, and composite catalysts. The effects of various parameters, including the solution pH and weight ratio, on the photocatalytic reduction of Cr (VI) were investigated. The highest photocatalytic reduction performance (97.6%) was achieved at pH 4 and a reaction time of 70 min. Photoluminescence emission measurements were used to confirm efficient charge migration and separation across the SNRZ, which improved the reduction of Cr (VI). A feasible reduction mechanism for the SNRZ photocatalyst is proposed. This study presents an effective, inexpensive, non-toxic, and stable catalyst, for the reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) using SNRZ ternary nanocatalysts.

Solar light induced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in the presence of ZnO/NiFe2O4/Co3O4 as a new and highly efficient magnetically separable photocatalyst

In this study, a new solar light-driven magnetic heterogeneous photocatalyst, denoted as ZnO/NiFe₂O₄/Co₃O₄, is successfully prepared. FT-IR, XPS, XRD, VSM, DRS, FESEM, TEM, EDS, elemental mapping, and ICP analysis are accomplished for full characterization of this catalyst. FESEM and TEM analyses of the photocatalyt clearly affirm the formation of a hexagonal structure of ZnO (25–40 nm) and the cubic structure of NiFe₂O₄ and Co₃O₄ (10–25 nm). Furthermore, the HRTEM images of the photocatalyst verify some key lattice fringes related to the photocatalyt structure. These data are in very good agreement with XRD analysis results. According to the ICP analysis, the molar ratio of ZnO/NiFe₂O₄/Co₃O₄ composite is obtained to be 1:0.75:0.5. Moreover, magnetization measurements reveals that the ZnO/NiFe₂O₄/Co₃O₄ has a superparamagnetic behavior with saturation magnetization of 32.38 emu/g. UV-vis DRS analysis indicates that the photocatalyst has a boosted and strong light response. ZnO/NiFe₂O₄/Co₃O₄, with band gap energy of about 2.65 eV [estimated according to the Tauc plot of (αhν)²vs. hν], exhibits strong potential towards the efficacious degradation of tetracycline (TC) by natural solar light. It is supposed that the synergistic optical effects between ZnO, NiFe₂O₄, and Co₃O₄ species is responsible for the increased photocatalytic performance of this photocatalyst under the optimal conditions (photocatalyst dosage = 0.02 g L⁻¹, TC concentration = 30 mg L⁻¹, pH = 9, irradiation time = 20 min, and TC degradation efficiency = 98%). The kinetic study of this degradation process is evaluated and it is well-matched with the pseudo-first-order kinetics. Based on the radical quenching tests, it can be perceived that ^•O₂⁻ species and holes are the major contributors in such a process, whereas the ^•OH radicals identify to have no major participation. The application of this methodology is implemented in a facile and low-cost photocatalytic approach to easily degrade TC by using a very low amount of the photocatalyst under natural sunlight source in an air atmosphere. The convenient magnetic isolation and reuse of the photocatalyst, and almost complete mineralization of TC (based on TOC analysis), are surveyed too, which further highlights the operational application of the current method. Notably, this method has the preferred performance among the very few methods reported for the photocatalytic degradation of TC under natural sunlight. It is assumed that the achievements of this photocatalytic method have opened an avenue for sustainable environmental remediation of a broad range of contaminants.

Construction of the Photocatalytic Film of the Recyclable TaON/Nickel Foam with Ohmic Junction for Efficient Wastewater Treatment

A recyclable photocatalytic film of TaON/Ni foam with ohmic junction is prepared by the electrophoretic deposition technology. The photocatalytic film of 60 mg TaON/Ni foam demonstrates excellent photocatalytic activity and recycling performance for the degradation of basic fuchsin from water. Around 80% of basic fuchsin (50 mL, 10 mg L−1) is removed over 60 mg TaON/Ni foam under irradiation of 72 W LED white light for 5 h. The photocatalytic activity of the film does not significantly decrease after three rounds of use. The active species for the photocatalytic degradation of basic fuchsin are ·O2−, h+ and ·OH.
