Adsorption behavior and mechanism of U(VI) onto phytic Acid-modified Biochar/MoS2 heterojunction materials

π-electron injection activated dormant ligands in graphitic carbon nitride for efficient and stable uranium extraction

Graphitic carbon nitride (CN) as an adsorbent exhibit promising potential for the removal of uranium in water. However, the lack of active sites seriously restricts its practical application. In contrast to the traditional method of introducing new ligands, we propose a strategy to activate original ligands on CN by injecting π electrons, which can be realized by grafting 4-phenoxyphenol (PP) on CN (PCN). Compared with CN, the maximum adsorption capacity of PCN for uranium increased from 150.9 mg/g to 380.6 mg/g. Furthermore, PCN maintains good adsorption properties over a wide range of uranium concentrations (1 ∼ 60 mg/L) and pH (4 ∼ 8). After 5 consecutive cycles, PCN exhibited sustained uranium removal performance with a little of losses. The experimental and theoretical results show that the enhancement of adsorption performance is mainly due to the ligands activation of CN by delocalization of π electrons from PP. Furthermore, this activation can be enhanced by irradiation, as the CN can be photoexcited to provide additional photoelectrons for PP. As a result, dormant ligands such as N-CN, C-O-C, C-N-H and N-(C)3 can be activated to participate in coordination with uranium. This work provides theoretical guidance for the design and preparation of high efficiency uranium adsorbent.

The modified biochar from wheat straw by the combined composites of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles and chitosan Schiff base for enhanced removal of U(VI) ions from aqueous solutions

In the last few decades, U(VI) is a significant environmental threat. The innovative and environmentally friendly adsorbent materials for U(VI) removal were urgent. Preparation of the modified biochar from wheat straw by combined composites of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles and chitosan Schiff base (MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC) was characterized, and adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the performance and interfacial mechanism of U(VI) removal. The results showed that MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC exhibited high adsorption capacity of U(VI) compared with BC. The adsorption process of U(VI) removal by MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC could be ascribed as pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of U(VI) removal by MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC reached 19.57 mg/g at pH4.0, 30 mg/L of U(VI), and 25 °C. The possible mechanism was a chemical adsorption process, and it mainly contained electrostatic attraction and surface complexation. Additionally, it also was an economic and environmental friendly adsorbent.

Synthesis and fabrication of segregative and durable MnO2@chitosan composite aerogel beads for uranium(VI) removal from wastewater

To address the imperative need for efficient removal of uranium-containing wastewater and mitigate radioactive contamination risks associated with nuclear energy, the development of materials with high removal efficiency and facile separation is crucial. This study designed and synthesised MnO2@chitosan (CTS) composite aerogel beads by in-situ growing δ-MnO2 on porous CTS aerogel beads. This approach not only mitigates the agglomeration of MnO2 nanospheres but also significantly enhances the porous structure and surface area of MnO2@CTS. These cost-effective and eco-friendly millimeter-scale spherical aerogels exhibited convenient separation properties after adsorption. These characteristics help mitigate the risk of equipment seam blockage and secondary pollution that are often associated with powdered adsorbents. Additionally, MnO2@CTS exhibited remarkable mechanical strength (stress approximately 0.55 MPa at 60 % strain), enabling rapid separation and easy regeneration while maintaining high adsorption performance even after five cycles. Significantly, MnO2@CTS exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 410.7 mg/g at pH 6 and 298 K, surpassing reported values for most CTS/MnO2-based adsorbents. The chemisorption process of U(VI) on MnO2@CTS followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Dubinin-Radushkevish models. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis further confirmed the reduction of U(VI) to U(V/IV). These findings highlight the substantial potential of MnO2@CTS aerogel beads for U(VI) removal from aqueous solutions, positioning them as a promising solution for addressing U(VI) contamination in wastewater.

Graphitic N-doped biochar for superefficient uranium recycling from nuclear wastewater

N-doped biochar (AL-N/BC) prepared by pyrolyzing lignin in various temperatures manifested superefficient performance for uranium (U) recycling from nuclear wastewater. The optimist AL-N/BC-700 showed higher adsorption capacity of 25,000 mg/g and faster kinetics of 4100 g·min^-1·mg^-1 than the most of reported adsorbents, and excellent adsorption-desorption capability (adsorption rate > 90 % and desorption rate > 70 % after 12 cycles). Moreover, the high applicability of AL-N/BC-700 was verified by its superefficient U(VI) adsorption performance in a broad working pH range, various water matrices, and high irradiation stability. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism discloses the significant role of graphitic N, rather than pyridinic N or pyrrolic N, for U(VI) adsorption. Overall, this work not only presents an applicable approach to alleviate the increasingly serious energy crisis via recycling U(VI) from nuclear wastewater, but also enriches the method of synthesizing N-doped materials for U(VI) adsorption.

Mussel inspired synthesis of polydopamine/polyethyleneimine-grafted fly ash composite adsorbent for the effective separation of U(VI)

Polydopamine/polyethyleneimine-grafted fly ash composite (PDA/PEI/FA), an efficient multifunctional adsorbent for U(VI) with excellent separation efficiency (94.5 %) and capacity (422.5 mg/g), was synthesized by grafting PDA and PEI on FA via Mussel inspiration and Michael addition reaction. The introduction of PDA and PEI had brought numerous functional groups with fine affinities to uranium, like catechol, amino and imino, causing good U(VI) separation performances. Langmuir and Pseudo-second-order models were well matched with experimental data, illustrating the U(VI) separation on PDA/PEI/FA was a homogeneous chemical adsorption process. After five cycles, the U(VI) adsorption efficiency for PDA/PEI/FA was still up to 90.2 %, implying that PDA/PEI/FA possessed good stability and reusability. Besides, the good dynamic adsorption performances of PDA/PEI/FA further demonstrated that PDA/PEI/FA was an ideal adsorbent for the practical wastewater treatment. According to the characterization results, U(VI) was absorbed by PAD/PEI/FA through complexation, redox reaction, electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding. Given the above, PDA/PEI/FA showed good practical application prospect in U(VI) separation.

Ultra-fast uranium capture via the synergistic interaction of the intrinsic sulfur atoms and the phosphoric acid groups adhered to edge sulfur of MoS2

In order to deal with the sudden nuclear leakage event to suppress the spread of radioactive contaminants in a short period of time, it is extremely urgent needed to explore an adsorbent that could be capable of in-situ remedial actions to rapidly capture the leaked radionuclides in split second. An adsorbent was developed that MoS₂ via ultrasonic to expose more surface defects afterwards functionalized by phosphoric acid resulting in more active sites being endowed on the edge S atoms of Mo-vacancy defects, while simultaneously increased the hydrophilicity and interlayer spacing. Hence, an overwhelming fast adsorption rates (adsorption equilibrium within 30 s) are presented and place the MoS₂-PO₄ at the top of performing sorbent materials. Moreover, the maximum capacity calculated from Langmuir model is as high as 354.61 mg·g^-1, the selective adsorption capacity (S_U) achieving 71.2% in the multi-ion system and with more than 91% capacity retention after 5 cycles of recycling. Finally, XPS and DFT insight into the adsorption mechanism, which can be explained as interaction of UO₂²⁺ on the surface of MoS₂-PO₄ by forming U-O and U-S bonds. The successful fabrication of such a material may provide a promising solution for emergency treatment of radioactive wastewater during nuclear leakage events.
