Comparative genetic, biochemical and physiological analysis of sodium and chlorine in wheat

Plant with a great diversity shows several responses towards the biotic and abiotic stresses. Among these abiotic stresses, salinity is the main damaging factor as it reduces the yield of wheat plant with moderate salt tolerance. For its survival, plant undergoes through some genetic, biochemical and physiological changes to tackle the stress. This review mainly describes the conditions where various ions present in the soil, especially sodium and chlorine, enter into the plant and the genes or proteins involved with survival mechanism against the damage in plants. Salt stress causes alteration in enzymatic activity and Photosynthesis, oxidative stress, damage of cellular structure and components and ionic imbalance. Ion toxicity stress occur due to accumulation of excessive sodium ion and chloride ion. Transcriptional factors TaPIMP, TaSRG and TaMYBsdu 1 play key role in gene expression mechanism to overcome the stress. High affinity potassium transporter gene family is responsible for salt tolerance in wheat plant. HKT1;4 and HKT1;5 genes are responsible for Na exclusion in Triticum monococcum. Forty QTLs were found with the marker assisted selection in bread wheat for salinity tolerance and some morphological traits, 5 QTLs were related to sodium ion exclusion. In bread wheat, salt stress tolerance mechanism is mainly an exclusion of Na⁺ ions but also include K⁺ ion concentration. The salinity tolerant germplasm MW#293 provides an opportunity for the development of future salinity tolerant bread wheat.

Stability Analysis and Molecular Description of Some Promising Sorghum Lines Tolerant to Salt Stress

<b>Background and Objective:</b> Salt stress is considering the biggest environmental obstacle to crop productivity, especially sorghum. So, it was necessary to develop new sorghum lines tolerant to salt stress and high yielding to participate in bridging the large gap in the Egyptian bread industry and also as an important feed for animals. This is the biggest goalie this investigation. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> Some promising sorghum genotypes were evaluated under the control experiment and two salinity stress locations to test their stability and its salinity stress tolerance during two years. Some agro-morphological and physiological traits were the most important parameters tested under all conditions besides, 11 SCoT primers for comparing among the seven sorghum genotypes and Identification of molecular genetic markers responsible for salt stress tolerance. <b>Results:</b> The final results revealed that the five promising sorghum lines were recorded highly rank of salinity stress tolerance in all studied traits and a higher level of genetic stability during the two years. <b>Conclusion:</b> Results of agro-physiological traits, salinity tolerance indices and SCoT primers succeed in determining salt stress tolerance mechanisms in sorghum and which an important taxonomic tool is for plant breeder that helps him in sorting the tolerant genotypes from the sensitive ones.

Silicon application induces changes C:N:P stoichiometry and enhances stoichiometric homeostasis of sorghum and sunflower plants under salt stress

Beneficial effects of silicon (Si) on growth have been observed in some plant species, reportedly due to stoichiometric changes of C, N, and P. However, little is known about the effects on the stoichiometric relationships between C, N, and P when silicon is supplied via different modes in sorghum and sunflower plants under salt stress conditions. Therefore, the current study was performed to investigate the impact of differing modes of Si supply on shoot biomass production and C:N:P stoichiometry in sorghum and sunflower plants under salt stress. Two experiments were performed in a glass greenhouse using the strong Si-accumulator plant sorghum, as well as the intermediate type Si-accumulator sunflower, both of which were grown in pots filled with washed sand. Plant species were cultivated for 30 days in the absence or presence of salt stress (0 or 100 mM) and supplemented with one of four Si treatments: control plants (without Si), 28.6 mmol Si L-1 via foliar application, 2.0 mmol Si L-1 via nutrient solution, and combined application of foliar and nutrient solution, each group with five replications. The results revealed that supplied Si modified the C, N, and P concentrations, thereby enhancing the C:N:P stoichiometry and shoot dry matter of sorghum and sunflower plants under salt stress. Both application of Si via nutrient solution, as well as combined application via foliar and nutrient solution, increased the C:N ratio in both plant species under salt stress, but in sorghum plants decreased the C:P and N:P ratios and increased the shoot biomass production by 39%, while in sunflower plants increased the C:P and N:P ratios and increased the shoot biomass production by 24%. Our findings suggest that salt stress alleviation by Si impacts C:N:P stoichiometric relationships in a variable manner depending on the ability of the species to accumulate Si, as well as the route of Si administration.

Crop diversification and saline water irrigation as potential strategies to save freshwater resources and reclamation of marginal soils-a review

Feeding 9 billion by 2050 is one of major challenges for researchers. Use of diversified crops, nonconventional water resources and rehabilitation of marginal lands are alternate options to produce more food to face climate change projections. Adaptation to climate change through climate smart agriculture practices, agroecology activities, and crop-based management packages can help transform the marginal lands from environmental burdens into productive and economic blocks. This review discusses the recent advancements on specialty group of alternate crops (oil seeds, legumes, cereals, medicinal, lignocellulose, and fruit crops) which can adapt in the marginal environments. Availability of alternate water resources (saline water, treated wastewater) for irrigation cannot be omitted. Crop diversification systems involving drought and salt-tolerant crops are likely to be the key to future agricultural and economic growth in the regions where salt-affected soils exist and/or saline aquifers are pumped for irrigation. These systems may tackle three main tasks: sustainable management of land resources and enhancement of per unit productivity; intensification of agroecological practices to increase soil fertility; and improving productivity of marginal lands for diversified climate smart crops. This review explores various aspects of marginal lands and selection of tolerant crop genotypes, crop diversification, and agroecological practices to maximize benefits.

Effect of salt tolerance on biomass production in a large population of sorghum accessions

Salinity causes major reductions in cultivated land area, crop productivity, and crop quality, and salt-tolerant crops have been required to sustain agriculture in salinized areas. The annual C₄ crop plant Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench is salt tolerant, with large variation among accessions. Sorghum's salt tolerance is often evaluated during early growth, but such evaluations are weakly related to overall performance. Here, we evaluated salt tolerance of 415 sorghum accessions grown in saline soil (0, 50, 100, and 150 mM NaCl) for 3 months. Some accessions produced up to 400 g per plant of biomass and showed no growth inhibition at 50 mM NaCl. Our analysis indicated that the genetic factors that affected biomass production under 100 mM salt stress were more different from those without salt stress, comparing to the differences between those under 50 mM and 100 mM salt stress. A genome-wide association study for salt tolerance identified two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were significantly associated with biomass production, only at 50 mM NaCl. Additionally, two SNPs were significantly associated with salt tolerance index as an indicator for growth response of each accession to salt stress. Our results offer candidate genetic resources and SNP markers for breeding salt-tolerant sorghum.

Salt responsive physiological, photosynthetic and biochemical attributes at early seedling stage for screening soybean genotypes

Salt stress affects all the stages of plant growth however seed germination and early seedling growth phases are more sensitive and can be used for screening of crop germplasm. In this study, we aimed to find the most effective indicators of salt tolerance for screening ten genotypes of soybean (SL-295, Gujosoya-2, PS-1042, PK-1029, ADT-1, RKS-18, KDS-344, MAUS-47, Bragg and PK-416). The principal component analysis (PCA) resulted in the formation of three different clusters, salt sensitive (SL-295, Gujosoya-2, PS-1042 and ADT-1), salt tolerant (MAUS-47, Bragg and PK-416) and moderately tolerant/sensitive (RKS-18, PK-1029 and KDS-344) suggesting that there was considerable genetic variability for salt tolerance in the soybean genotypes. Subsequently, genotypes contrasting in salt tolerance were analyzed for their physiological traits, photosynthetic efficiency and mitochondrial respiration at seedling and early germination stages under different salt (NaCl) treatments. It was found that salt mediated increase in AOX-respiration, root and shoot K+/Na+ ratio, improved leaf area and water use efficiency were the key determinants of salinity tolerance, which could modulate the net photosynthesis (carbon assimilation) and growth parameters (carbon allocation). The results suggest that these biomarkers could be can be useful for screening soybean genotypes for salt tolerance.
