Malocclusion trait and the parafunctional effect among young female school students

Evaluation of the bioelectrical activity of the masticatory muscles in patients with narrowed maxillary transverse dimension compared to the occlusal norm

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study was to determine how the electrical activity of the temporalis, masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles differs in children with reduced transverse jaw dimension compared to children with normal occlusion.

DESIGN

It was a experimental study. Thirty-seven patients were included in the study. 18 in the study group received orthodontic treatment with removable appliances and 19 subjects were classified as normal occlusion subjects in the control group. A panoramic X-ray and digital intraoral scan were taken, followed by an surface electromyography of three muscle pairs (temporalis muscles, masseter muscles, sternocleidomastoid muscles) in resting position, while clenching and clenching on cotton rollers.

RESULTS

There was significantly greater activity in the experimental group than in the control group comparing muscles: temporalis muscles and masseter muscles in the resting position. Additionally, significantly greater activity of muscles in the control group was found during clenching. However, the asymmetry index of muscles indicates that there is significantly greater asymmetry of muscles activity in the experimental group. Compared to children with normal occlusion, children with a narrowed transverse dimension of the jaw have statistically significant differences in the bioelectrical activity of the temporalis, masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles, as well as greater asymmetry in the bioelectrical voltage of the masseter muscles.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with reduced transverse dimension of the jaw are characterized by increased resting activity of the masticatory muscles and reduced functional activity of the masticatory muscles. These patients have increased asymmetry in the bioelectrical tension of the masticatory muscles.

Oral habits among preschool Indian children at Durg-Bhilai city

One of the major contributing causes to the development of malocclusion and other negative impacts on orofacial complexes is oral habits during and after preschool. Therefore, it is of interest to ascertain the prevalence of oral habits in preschoolers in Durg-Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, India. Using the cluster sampling technique, four schools two from each of Durg and Bhilai City were chosen to participate in the study. 400 LKG and UKG students, along with their mothers or caregivers, were chosen based on the inclusion/exclusion criteria. The Chi-square test was employed in the statistical study. Thus, preschoolers at durg-bhilai city, Chhattisgarh, India, had a high prevalence of oral habits.

Prevalence of Oral Parafunctional Habits in Children and Related Factors: An Observational Cross-sectional Study

Aim

Parafunctional habits cause movements indicating their effect as functional and structural disorders such as malocclusion and temporomandibular joint changes in the oral and dental organs. This cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with parafunctional habits in 6-12-year-old children in Qom, Iran.

Materials and methods

This analytical cross-sectional study was performed on 403 6-12-year-old schoolchildren of Qom, Iran. Data collection tools included a demographic questionnaire and a checklist prepared along with a clinical examination. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), with chi-square and analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests.

Results

The mean age of children was 8.9 ± 2.03 years. Bruxism was more common than other parafunctional habits (22.6%). There was a significant relationship between oral habits with children's gender and age (p <0.001). However, there was no significant relationship between oral habits and other variables such as underlying disease, economic status and parent's smoking (p >0.05).

Conclusions

Given the relatively high prevalence of parafunctional habits in children, it seems that children should be investigated for the presence of such habits in order to provide the necessary education to parents and perform dental interventions to prevent complications from oral habits. Dental interventions at a younger age are easier to conduct and have a more effective preventive role.

Malocclusion in children with speech sound disorders and motor speech involvement: a cross-sectional clinical study in Swedish children

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this study were to investigate the occurrence, types and severity of malocclusions in children with speech sound disorder (SSD) persisting after 6 years of age, and to compare these findings to a control group of children with typical speech development (TSD).

METHODS

In total, 105 children were included: 61 with SSD and motor speech involvement (mean age 8:5 ± 2:8 years; range 6:0-16:7 years, 14 girls and 47 boys) and 44 children with TSD (mean age 8:8 ± 1:6; range 6:0-12:2 years, 19 girls and 25 boys). Extra-oral and intra-oral examinations were performed by an orthodontist. The severity of malocclusion was scored using the IOTN-DHC Index.

RESULTS

There were differences between the SSD and TSD groups with regard to the prevalence, type, and severity of malocclusions; 61% of the children in the SSD group had a malocclusion, as compared to 29% in the TSD group. In addition, the malocclusions in the SSD group were rated as more severe. Functional posterior crossbite and habitual lateral and/or anterior shift appeared more frequently in the SSD group. Class III malocclusion, anterior open bite and scissors bite were found only in the SSD group.

CONCLUSION

Children with SSD and motor speech involvement are more likely to have a higher prevalence of and more severe malocclusions than children with TSD.
