Relationship Between Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Sports-Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

The primary objective of this research is to analyze and compare the effects of physical activity on patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition characterized by repeated episodes of partial or complete obstruction of the upper airway during sleep, leading to disrupted sleep and various health complications. Methods: A systematic and strategic search of 16 peer-reviewed articles was conducted to assess the impact of different types of physical exercise on the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), a key metric used to quantify the severity of OSA. The selected studies focused on two main exercise modalities: aerobic exercise alone and a combination of aerobic and resistance training. These modalities were examined to determine their respective influences on the AHI among individuals with OSA. Results: The findings revealed that aerobic exercise alone did not significantly alter the apnea-hypopnea index (p = 0.15), suggesting limited effectiveness in reducing the severity of OSA when performed in isolation. However, in patients who engaged in combined physical activity-incorporating both aerobic and resistance exercises-a significant reduction in the AHI was observed (p < 0.01), indicating a more substantial therapeutic effect. Conclusions: This study concludes that a structured exercise program combining aerobic and resistance training produces a significant improvement in the apnea-hypopnea indices of patients with obstructive sleep apnea. These results highlight the potential of combined exercise regimens as a non-pharmacological intervention that could complement traditional OSA treatments, offering a viable approach to managing the condition and improving patient outcomes. Future research should aim to explore the optimal exercise intensity, duration, and frequency to maximize these benefits.

Impact of Nadi Shuddhi Pranayama on Apnea Hypopnea Index, Respiratory Distress Index, and Oxygen Desaturation Index Among Adolescents With Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Background Sleep apnea syndrome has gained significant recognition over the last decade as a potential cause of substantial childhood morbidity. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI), Respiratory Distress Index (RDI), and Oxygen Desaturation Index (ODI) among adolescents with sleep apnea syndrome. Objectives The objective of this study is to compare the impact of Nadi Shuddhi Pranayama with routine treatment modalities on the AHI, RDI, and ODI among adolescents with sleep apnea syndrome. Specifically, the study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Nadi Shuddhi Pranayama in improving AHI, RDI, and ODI in this population. Methods This study was an interventional case-control study and enrolled 34 adolescents aged 10 to 18 years who were diagnosed with sleep apnea syndrome. The participants were divided into two groups: the Nadi Shuddhi Pranayama group (n=17) and the control group (n=17). Baseline assessments included the collection of demographic information, medical history, and polysomnography results to determine the AHI, RDI, and ODI. Follow-up assessments were conducted post-intervention to measure changes in the AHI, RDI, and ODI. Results There were no significant differences between groups in terms of age (p = 0.176) or gender distribution (p = 0.300). After the intervention period, participants in the Nadi Shuddhi Pranayama group showed significant improvements in the Apnea Hypopnea Index compared to the standard care group (p = 0.007). However, there were no significant differences in the Respiratory Distress Index (p = 0.547) or Oxygen Desaturation Index (p = 0.304) between the groups post-intervention. Subgroup analysis based on severity categories (Mild, Normal) for the Apnea Hypopnea Index showed a significant difference between the Nadi Shuddhi Pranayama and standard care groups (p = 0.037). However, there were no significant differences in the Respiratory Distress Index (p = 0.300) and Oxygen Desaturation Index (p = 0.169) between the groups in this subgroup. Conclusion These findings suggest that Nadi Shuddhi Pranayama may improve the Apnea Hypopnea Index in adolescents with sleep apnea, particularly in those with mild symptoms, but did not significantly affect the Respiratory Distress Index or Oxygen Desaturation Index.

The Overlap Syndrome: A Combination of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a severe lung disease that results in persistent and progressively worsening airflow obstruction due to abnormalities in the airway and alveoli. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a critical condition characterized by obstructive apneas, hypopneas, and respiratory effort-related arousals. These events occur due to the repetitive collapse of the upper airway during sleep, and it is essential to address this condition. These two conditions, when co-occur, are known as overlap syndrome (OS), which is associated with a higher likelihood of morbidity and mortality compared to either condition alone. Effective management of overlap syndrome is critical to maintain normal oxygen levels during sleep and reduce the incidence of hypoxemia and hypoventilation while improving sleep quality. Positive pressure ventilation is a standard technique used to effectively lower hospitalizations, emergency room visits, moderate and severe exacerbations, and related healthcare expenses in patients diagnosed with COPD and OSA. Despite the lack of literature on overlap syndrome, it is imperative to understand that this condition requires prompt and effective management to prevent further complications. Therefore, this review provides a detailed discussion highlighting the importance of proactive measures to manage overlap syndrome.
