The comparisons of non-linear models to describe the growth performance of Lori-Bakhtiari sheep

BACKGROUND

The study of growth traits is of interest to many animal scientists, regardless of specialization, due to the economic importance of growth rate, mature weight and other related traits.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to compare six non-linear models for describing the growth of Lori-Bakhtiari sheep.

METHODS

In order to collect weight data, 85 lambs (41 males and 44 females) were reared from birth to 140 days of age, and their growth patterns were recorded by measuring their body weight at 10-day intervals. Various mathematical functions, including the negative exponential, Brody, Gompertz, Logistic, Morgan-Mercer-Flodin (MMF) and Weibull, were used to model the relationship between body weight records and age.

RESULTS

The results showed that the MMF and Gompertz models provided the best fit to the body weight data, whereas the negative exponential model exhibited the worst fit. In all models, the asymptotic weight of male lambs was higher than females. The research also revealed differences in growth patterns between male and female lambs. Overall, females had a lower absolute growth rate than males, but they reached their peak growth at an earlier period, and their growth rate declined faster.

CONCLUSIONS

The differences in growth patterns between males and females indicate the importance of analysing male and female data separately when describing growth. As a result, Gompertz model can be recommended to Lori-Bakhtiari female and male lamb breeders to determine more accurate growth traits. In addition, it should be considered that feeding male and female lambs separately according to absolute growth rate values may increase growth performance.

Modeling the growth curve in ducks: a sinusoidal model as an alternative to classical nonlinear models

The present study aimed to apply a sinusoidal model to duck body weight records in order to introduce it to the field of poultry science. Using 8 traditional growth functions as a guide (Bridges, Janoschek, logistic, Gompertz, Von Bertalanffy, Richards, Schumacher, and Morgan), this study looked at how well the sinusoidal equation described the growth patterns of ducks. By evaluating statistical performance and examining model behavior during nonlinear regression curve fitting, models were compared. The data used in this study came from 3 published articles reporting 1) body weight records of Kuzi ducks aged 1 to 70 d, 2) body weight records for Polish Peking ducks aged 1 to 70 d, and 3) average body weight of Peking ducks aged 1 to 42 d belonging to 5 different breeds. The general goodness-of-fit of each model to the various data profiles was assessed using the adjusted coefficient of determination, root mean square error, Akaike's information criterion (AIC), and Bayesian information criterion. All of the models had adjusted coefficient of determination values that were generally high, indicating that the models generally fit the data well. Duck growth dynamics are accurately described by the chosen sinusoidal equation. The sinusoidal equation was found to be one of the best functions for describing the age-related changes in body weight in ducks when the growth functions were compared using the goodness-of-fit criteria. To date, no research has been conducted on the use of sinusoidal equations to describe duck growth development. To describe the growth curves for a variety of duck strains/lines, the sinusoidal function employed in this study serves as a suitable substitute for conventional growth functions.

The growth of domestic goats and sheep: A meta study with Bertalanffy-Pütter models

Growth literature often uses the Brody, Gompertz, Verhulst, and von Bertalanffy models. Is there a rationale for the preference of these classical named models? The versatile five-parameter Bertalanffy-Pütter (BP) model generalizes these models. We revisited peer-reviewed publications from the years 1970–2019 that fitted growth models to together 122 mass-at-age data of sheep and goats from 19 countries and studied the best-fit BP-models using the least-squares method. None of the named models was ever best-fitting. However, for 70% of the data a single non-sigmoidal model had an acceptable fit (normalized root mean squared error 〈 5% and F-ratio test 〉 5% in comparison to the best-fit): the Brody model. The inherently non-sigmoidal character was further underlined, as there were only 39% of the data, where the best-fitting BP-model had a discernible inflection point. For these data, conclusions of biological interest could be drawn from the sigmoidal best-fit BP-models: the maximal weight gain per day was about 55% higher than the natal weight gain per day.

Growth and carcass attributes of growing Creole kids according to experimental infection level and type of diet

In the tropics one of the major constraints to goat production is infection by gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN). One promising alternative to chemotherapy is the improvement of host nutrition. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of infection and supplementation on packed cell volume (PCV), average daily gain (ADG) and carcass quality in growing Creole kids. Sixty male goats were reared indoors following a 2 × 3 factorial design: two experimental infection levels, (infected (I) and non-infected (NI)) and three diets D (G, kids were fed exclusively with tropical forages; B, kids were supplemented with dried and crushed banana and C, kids were supplemented with commercial pellets). Faecal egg counts did not vary among I groups (on average 2,200 ω/g). The PCV and ADG were improved (P < 0.001) for NI vs. I animals. There was a D effect (P < 0.001) and no I × D interaction was observed. There was no significant effect of GIN on the main carcass data, except the weights of liver, white offal and abdominal fat, which increased slightly in I compared with NI goats (P < 0.05). All carcass data increased significantly with the addition of supplement in the diet (P < 0.001), except for carcass-cut proportions. Meat physical parameters were degraded when I kids received low N diets (B or G) with higher lightness and water loss than in the C groups. Given that GIN affect the animal's N metabolism it is recommended to avoid the use of unbalanced diet such as those banana-based. Further research is necessary to assess the nutrition × parasitism interactions on physiological features and carcass quality of Creole goats.
