Gastrointestinal nematode infection pattern of Greek dairy goats reared under extensive husbandry conditions and treated with anthelmintics at different times during the year

Gastrointestinal helminth infections of dairy goats in Slovakia

The aim of this study was to identify the most common gastrointestinal (GI) parasites in flocks of dairy goats on 30 farms in Slovakia. A total of 944 adult goats were examined during the pasturing seasons for 2014 – 2016. Eggs from one or more species of gastrointestinal parasites were identified in 906 of the samples (95.90 %). Strongyle eggs were present in most of the samples (92.00 %), followed by Strongyloides papillosus (14.05 %), Trichuris spp. (7.84 %), Nematodirus spp. (3.98 %), and Moniezia spp. (2.65 %). The counts of strongyle eggs per gram of faeces ranged from 0 to 11 000. Subsamples from each farm were used to prepare faecal coprocultures to identify the genera of the nematodes. Third-stage larvae of Trichostrongylus spp. (100 %) and Teladorsagia/Ostertagia spp. (96.60 %) were present on most of the farms, followed by Oesophagostomum spp./Chabertia ovina (86.60 %) and Haemonchus contortus (76.60 %). Teladorsagia/Ostertagia spp. were the dominant genera on 60 % of the farms.

The use of targeted selective treatments against gastrointestinal nematodes in milking sheep and goats in Greece based on parasitological and performance criteria

This study compared the use of targeted selective treatment (TST) with systematic whole-flock treatments in 38 dairy sheep and goat farms in Greece. Criteria for individual treatments were either parasitological (nematode faecal egg count) or performance-based (body condition score or milk yield). The possible effect of treatment on resistance to benzimidazole anthelmintics was assessed using the Egg Hatch Test. Mean faecal egg counts decreased during the 12-month experimental period in all groups, and were lowest in the TST group treated according to faecal egg count (P<0.05). The number of sheep and goats treated by TST was reduced compared with systematic treatments. Mean thiabendazole-egg death dose(50) (TBZ-ED(50)) values from all groups were similar at the beginning and end of the study (P>0.05), but significant variation in TBZ-ED(50) was noted over the study period in systematically treated goats (P=0.045). Third stage larvae belonging to the genera Teladorsagia, Trichostrongylus and Haemonchus were dominant throughout the experimental period in all flocks. It was concluded that the use of targeted selective treatment reduced the number of anthelmintic treatments to achieve a similar level of parasite control or animal production and may offer a viable option to combine animal production with effective parasite control in Greece.

Growth and meat quality of kids of indigenous Greek goats (Capra prisca) as influenced by dietary protein and gastrointestinal nematode challenge

The effect of dietary protein and gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasitism on growth and meat quality of growing kids was assessed using sixty (60) kids in three groups (n=20); A: control, B: regularly treated with ALBENDAZOLE(®) and C: supplemented with dietary protein. The kids grazed in a pasture contaminated with L3 larvae of GIN. Growth and condition score were assessed at 21-day intervals. After 86days all kids were slaughtered. Carcasses were assessed for conformation, fatness, ultimate pH and other meat quality characteristics. Parasitic challenge was assessed by means of faecal egg counts (FEC), pasture larvae and adult nematodes in the GI tract of kids at slaughter. Groups C and B had higher growth rates and body condition score and produced significantly heavier (P<0.05) carcasses with better (P<0.01) conformation and fatness when compared to those of group A. Total unsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids were higher (P<0.05) in fat tissue of groups B and C. Group A had the highest FEC and group C had the lowest (P<0.05) FEC. The parasitic challenge of L3 on pasture reached its highest point at 42days and there were significant (P<0.01) differences between the numbers of Teladorsagia spp., Trichostrongylus spp., Haemonchus contortus, Oesophagostomum spp. and Chabertia spp. found in the GI tract of kids between the three groups; group A had the highest numbers. Overall, the results showed that the increased protein content in the diet of growing kids grazing on a pasture contaminated with L3 nematode larvae resulted in the production of acceptable carcasses.
