The comparisons of non-linear models to describe the growth performance of Lori-Bakhtiari sheep

BACKGROUND

The study of growth traits is of interest to many animal scientists, regardless of specialization, due to the economic importance of growth rate, mature weight and other related traits.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to compare six non-linear models for describing the growth of Lori-Bakhtiari sheep.

METHODS

In order to collect weight data, 85 lambs (41 males and 44 females) were reared from birth to 140 days of age, and their growth patterns were recorded by measuring their body weight at 10-day intervals. Various mathematical functions, including the negative exponential, Brody, Gompertz, Logistic, Morgan-Mercer-Flodin (MMF) and Weibull, were used to model the relationship between body weight records and age.

RESULTS

The results showed that the MMF and Gompertz models provided the best fit to the body weight data, whereas the negative exponential model exhibited the worst fit. In all models, the asymptotic weight of male lambs was higher than females. The research also revealed differences in growth patterns between male and female lambs. Overall, females had a lower absolute growth rate than males, but they reached their peak growth at an earlier period, and their growth rate declined faster.

CONCLUSIONS

The differences in growth patterns between males and females indicate the importance of analysing male and female data separately when describing growth. As a result, Gompertz model can be recommended to Lori-Bakhtiari female and male lamb breeders to determine more accurate growth traits. In addition, it should be considered that feeding male and female lambs separately according to absolute growth rate values may increase growth performance.

Genetic variance components of the growth curve for Isfahan indigenous chicken

BACKGROUND

Being able to model a growth curve using three or four non-linear functional parameters could help explain the growth phenomenon in a precise way and would allow the comparison of an animal's development rate, optimize management and feeding strategies and guide animal production strategies.

OBJECTIVE

The goal of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters of growth traits of Isfahan indigenous chicken in Iran and to determine the best non-linear model describing the growth curve.

METHODS

The prediction of additive genetic parameters was performed using the REML method by WOMBAT. Direct heritability of the studied traits and genetic correlations between them were obtained. The Logistic, Gompertz, von Bertalanffy, Brody, Negative exponential, Weibull, Janoschek and Bridges models were compared based on the coefficient of determination (R2 ), mean square error (MSE) and akaike information criterion.

RESULTS

The Gompertz model was identified as the best model for describing the growth curve for Isfahan native chicken. The heritability of maturity weights (A), initial weight (B) and maturity rate (K) parameters were 0.223 ± 0.002, 0.016 ± 0.005 and 0.087 ± 0.001, respectively.

CONCLUSION

This study shows that Isfahan indigenous chicken has the genetic potential for improving growth and reproduction based on their desirable heritabilities and correlations using appropriate models.

Genetic parameters of sheep growth curve traits reared within rangelands under uncertain paternity

This work aims to improve the selection program of the Timahdit breed through the use of the parameters of the Von Bertalanffy model as selection criteria and the treatment of uncertain paternity found in pastoral systems. A database containing 12,029 animals and a pedigree file integrating the probabilities of the parents with a total of 48,292 animals were used in the analysis. An individual estimation of the parameters of the model studied by the nonlinear regression procedure Proc NLIN of SAS was carried out, followed by the determination of the fixed effects which influence these parameters by means of a general linear model using the GLM procedure of the SAS software. The treatment of uncertain paternity is solved by an R code translating Average Numerator Relationship Matrix Model (ANRM). Then, the variance and (co)variance components were estimated by a Bayesian approach using the BRMS package. The high heritability values obtained, between 0.52 and 0.55 for the parameters studied, suggest good prospects for genetic responses to selection and the maintenance of sustained genetic progress, especially when environmental conditions are unfavorable. The positive correlations between all the parameters studied show that animals with rapid development tend to have lower weight performance. Finally, with optimal selection based on the genetic values associated with these parameters, we can make the desired changes to the growth curve by choosing breeders that achieve high weight performances as quickly as possible, and that would allow improving the feed efficiency for these animals, as well as increasing the profitability of sheep farms.

Determination of the effect of the dam age, birth type, and sex on growth curve traits of hair goat kids

This study was conducted to investigate the best-fit growth curve and dam age, sex, and birth type effect on growth curve traits of hair goat kids. Monthly 3858 test day body weight (BW) records of 643 hair goat kids from birth to 150 days of age were used to determine the best-fit growth curve and estimate growth curve parameters with Gompertz and Von Bertalanffy models. The BW records were assigned to three groups: dam age (3, 4, 5, 6, 7 years), sex (female, male), and birth type (single, twin). The Gompertz model gave more consistent results than the Von Bertalanffy model according to the goodness of fit criteria. Dam age had no significant effect on any of the growth curve traits. Sex of kids showed a significant effect on maturity index (parameter K) (P < 0.001), estimated mature body weight (parameter A), and weight at point of inflection (IPW) (P < 0.01). Also, birth type had a significant effect on initial/birth weight (parameter B) and parameter K (P < 0.001). Age at point of inflection (IPT) was not affected by any of the factors. Twin kids had a higher maturity index than singles while females higher than males. In conclusion, the Gompertz model was the most suitable model for hair goat kids for selection strategies. For proper selection, the effect of sex and birth type on growth curve traits should be considered by hair goat breeders.

Comparison of Nonlinear Growth Models to Estimate Growth Curves in Kivircik Sheep under a Semi-Intensive Production System

The Kivircik is an indigenous sheep breed from Turkey, and it has superior meat quality compared to other indigenous breeds. Therefore, farmers prioritize Kivircik lamb fattening instead of milk production. Here, we aimed to determine the best nonlinear growth model, i.e., Gompertz, Logistic, Von Bertalanffy, and Brody, to describe the growth curve of Kivircik lambs. The body weight data from birth until 150 days of age belonging to 612 lambs were used as the material of this study. The best fitting model was selected by considering the adjusted coefficient of determination (R²_adj), residual mean square, and Akaike's (AIC) and Bayesian information criteria (BIC). Even though the Brody model had a better statistical fit, considering its biological interpretation, the Gompertz model was identified as an appropriate model for describing Kivircik lamb growth. Male lambs, twin lambs, and lambs born in winter had higher mature live weights (44.2 kg, 71.2 kg, and 38.5 kg, respectively) and rate of weight gain (2.1, 2.6, and 2.0, respectively). However, our subgroups revealed a similar rate of maturity (0.01). Growth models are important tools for deciding the optimal slaughter age and they provide valuable information on the management practices of both sexes, birth types, and birth seasons. These results can be applied to breeding programs for early selection, enabling intervention strategies when needed.

Modelling the growth curve and estimation of associated genetic parameters in Munjal sheep

The study of growth curves in sheep is an effective approach to monitor the animal development for predicting the growth rate and improving overall flock performance. The purpose of the present work was to study the growth curve traits of Munjal sheep using different non-linear models and to estimate the genetic parameters of those traits for the possibility of inclusion of them under selection strategy. Total 2285 weight records at birth, 3, 6 and 12 months of age of 706 lambs born to 48 sires and 149 dams were collected from the registers maintained from 2004 to 2019. Various non-linear growth models viz., Brody, Gompertz, logistic, Bertalanffy and negative exponential were fitted to targeted growth curve traits and then evaluated using goodness of fit criteria such as adjusted R², root means square error (RMSE), Akaike's information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC). The genetic parameters of growth curve traits were estimated using animal model. The results suggested that Brody model was best fitted to the data than other models. The growth curve estimates for mature weight (A), inflexion point (B) and rate of maturation (k) under Brody model were 25.82 ± 1.72, 0.84 ± 0.04, and 0.21 ± 0.04, respectively for female lambs, and 29.55 ± 2.04, 0.86 ± 0.03 and 0.19 ± 0.04, respectively for male lambs. The males showed superiority for mature weights whereas female lambs had higher maturation rates. The estimates of direct heritability for A, B and k were 0.33, 0.41 and 0.10, respectively. The moderate estimate of direct heritability of A and its negative genetic correlation with k indicated the scope of genetic improvement through selection based on mature weights. Therefore, it was concluded from the present findings that Brody model was the one that best describes the growth curve in the Munjal sheep and the selection based on mature weights can be employed for genetic improvement of Munjal flock.

Nonlinear modeling of growth and study of a new characterization point applied to Timahdit breed sheep under uncertain paternity

The objectives of this study are to determine which model, among those of Brody, Logistic, Gompertz, Von Bertalanffy and Richards, is the most appropriate to describe the growth of this breed and to choose a point for this model which would be closest to the slaughter weight which have to be used as a selection criterion. Also, in preparation for genetic evaluation under uncertain paternity, Henderson's Average Numerator Relationship Matrix method was used and an R code was developed for the creation of the inverse matrix A which was replaced the pedigree in the animal model. To do this, 64,282 observations corresponding to 12,944 animals, collected between 2009 and 2016, were analyzed. The Von Bertalanffy function had the smallest AIC, BIC, and deviance criteria values, indicating better data representation for both sexes. Considering the average slaughter live weight of 29.4 kg in the study area, the new point of characterization named f(t_bm), later than the inflection point of the growth curve, is closer to the commercial target for females intended for regular slaughter supplying butchers and for animals of both sexes intended for religious festivals. Therefore, it would be appropriate to consider this point as a selection criterion for this breed. The developed R code will be integrated into a free R package allowing the estimation of the genetic parameters of the traits of the Von Bertalanffy model.

Genetic analysis of growth curve in Moghani Sheep using Bayesian and restricted maximum likelihood

This study was conducted to predict the genetic (co)variance components of growth curve parameters of Moghani sheep breed using the following information: birth weight (N = 7278), 3-mo-old weight (N = 5881), 6-mo-old weight (N = 5013), 9-mo-old weigh (N = 2819], and 12-mo-old weight (N = 2883). The growth parameters (A: maturity weight, B: growth rate, and K: maturity rate) were calculated using Gompertz, Logistic, Brody, and Von Bertalanffy nonlinear models via NLIN procedure of SAS software. The aforementioned models were compared using Akaike information criterion, root mean square error, adjusted co-efficient of determination. Also, both Bayesian (using MTGSAM) and RMEL (using WOMBAT) paradigms were adapted to predict the genetic (co)variance components of growth parameters (A, B, K) due to the best fitted growth models. It was turned out that Von Bertalanffy best fitted to the data in this study. The year of birth and lamb gender had a significant effect on maturity rate (P < 0.01). Also it turned out that within the growth parameter, with increasing (co)variance matrix complexity, the Bayesian paradigm fitted well to the data than the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) one. However, for simple animal model and across all growth parameters, REML outperformed Bayesian. In this way, the h2a predicted (0.15 ± 0.05), (0.11±.05), and (0.04 ± 0.03) for A, B, and K parameters, respectively. Practically, in terms of breeding plan, we could see that genetic improvement of growth parameters in this study is not a tractable strategy to follow up and improvement of the management and environment should be thoroughly considered. In terms of paradigm comparison, REML's bias correction bears up an advantageous approach as far as we are concerned with small sample size. To this end, REML predictions are fairly accurate but the mode of posterior distributions could be overestimated. Finally, the differences between REML and Bayesian estimates were found for all parameter data in this study. We conclude that simulation studies are necessary in order to trade off these parading in the complex random effects scenarios of genetic individual model.

Environmental Effects and Genetic Parameters for Growth Traits of Lohi Sheep

Estimating genetic parameters for growth traits is crucial to plan breeding strategies for improving meat production in indigenous sheep breeds. The study first tested the effects of environmental and maternal effects on five growth traits, including birth weight (BWT), weight at 120 days (WT120), weight at 180 days (WT180), weight at 270 days (WT270) and weight at 365 days of age (WT365) and then estimated genetic parameters for these traits using data obtained in 1215 Lohi sheep. The effects of factors, including year (YOB), season (SOB) and type of birth (TOB), age of dam (AOD) and sex on growth traits of Lohi sheep, were examined using analysis of variance (ANOVA) in R software. Sex, TOB and YOB significantly affected all studied traits. The estimates of direct and maternal heritability for BWT and WT120 were 0.15 ± 0.08 and 0.20 ± 0.06, and 0.45 ± 0.16, 0.21 ± 0.08, respectively. The direct heritability estimates for WT180, WT270 and WT365 were 0.20 ± 0.07, 0.21 ± 0.07 and 0.19 ± 0.08, respectively. Due to the high heritability estimate obtained for WT120 compared to other studied traits, and its strong genetic correlation (>0.9) with post-weaning growth traits, it is recommended that selection must be practiced on WT120 to improve the growth performance of Lohi sheep. The results could be used for the development of genetic/genomic selection programs aiming to improve the production performance of the Lohi sheep.

Pre-weaning performance and commercial growth curve in Dorper, Katahdin, and Romanov crossed lambs in a highland zone from central Mexico

The aim was to evaluate the pre-weaning productive performance and growth curve of Dorper*Katahdin (DPr; n = 46), Kathadin*Kathadin (KTn; n = 204) and Romanov*Kathadin (RMv; n = 40) of commercial crossed lambs from central Mexico. We considered 1450 data from 290 crossbred lambs. The variables contemplated in this study were cross (CR), lambing type (LT), sex, birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), test days (TD), and daily weight gain (DWG). Correlation analysis and adjustment of growth curve were performed. Differences in CR and sex were found only in BW (p < 0.05). No differences in DWG, WW, and TD (p > 0.05) by CR and sex were found. Single lambing had the highest (p < 0.05) BW, WW, and DWG. Phenotypic correlations differ among crosses. Lambs crossed with DPr presented the highest values in parameters a and b and the lowest in c. The productive behavior of DPr, KTn, and RMv cross with KTn lambs in central Mexico is similar in the pre-weaning period; however, the growth curve and parameters that characterize it suggest that DPr lambs show a tendency to enhance productive behavior in this period.
