The long-term effect of the Great Recession on European mortality

Some European countries, such as Greece and Spain, were severely hit by the 2008 economic crisis whereas others, such as Germany, were practically spared by it. This divergence allowed us to implement a difference in differences research design which offered the possibility to observe the long-lasting effects produced by the crisis on European life expectancy. Our analysis—based on Eurostat data from 2001 to 2019—shows that life expectancy increased faster, after the onset of the crisis, in those countries where the rise in unemployment was more intense. Furthermore, our results show that this gain in life expectancy persisted, and sometimes further increased, until 2019 when most macro-economic variables had returned to their pre-crisis values. Previous research has identified that mortality behaves procyclically in developed countries: when the economy slows down mortality decreases and vice versa. Our findings show, by contrast, that life expectancy behaves asymmetrically: it responded to an increase but not to a decrease in unemployment. This calls for a reconsideration of the causal mechanisms linking together the economic cycle and mortality in developed countries.

Economic fluctuations and cardiovascular diseases: A multiple-input time series analysis

Objectives

Little is known about the gender and age differences associated with the effects of economic fluctuations on hospitalization for cardiovascular diseases. This paper investigates the impact of economic fluctuations on hospitalization for ischemic heart disease (IHD), stroke, and hypertension by age and gender between January 1996 and December 2012 in Taiwan.

Methods

We adopted a multiple-input time series analysis to examine the strength of the immediate and latent effects of the 17-year quarterly unemployment rates (UR), air pollution exposure (APE), gross domestic product (GDP), per capita consumption expenditure in cigarette and alcohol (ECA), and per capita healthcare expenditure (HE) on the adjusted quarterly incidence rate of hospitalization. The data used in this paper were retrieved from the National Health Insurance Research Database and the website of the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS), Executive Yuan.

Results

Our findings indicate that higher UR increased IHD hospitalization in young men and women and middle-aged women but reduced stroke hospitalization in young men. Higher APE increased IHD hospitalization in young men but reduced it for young women, increased stroke hospitalization in old men and middle-aged women but reduced it for young men, and increased hypertension hospitalization in middle-aged men and young women. Higher ECA reduced IHD hospitalization in middle-aged men, increased stoke hospitalization in middle-aged and old men and middle-aged women. Higher HE reduced IHD hospitalization in old men, young and old women, reduced stroke hospitalization in old women, and reduced hypertension hospitalization in young and middle-aged women.

Conclusions

Overall, we found that the economic fluctuations caused increased harmful effects in certain population subgroups but also brought some soothing effects to some groups.

Social patterning of cardiovascular and metabolic risk in Colombian adults

OBJECTIVES

To test for differences in cardiovascular and metabolic risk (CMR) by educational attainment and physical capital. To compare CMR among black, indigenous, and mixed populations, accounting for socioeconomic status (SES).

DESIGN

We conducted multivariate analyses using cross-sectional data from a national survey of Colombian adults (n = 10,814) to examine the social patterning of CMR. In sex/gender-stratified models, a CMR index was regressed on educational attainment, physical capital, ethnicity/race, and age.

RESULTS

Women with a primary education (OR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.25, 2.15) had higher age- and ethnicity/race-adjusted odds of CMR than women with more than secondary education. Men with a primary education (OR = 0.67, 95% CI: 0.48, 0.92) had significantly lower adjusted odds of CMR than men with more than secondary education; these associations did not remain significant after adjustments for physical capital. Men in the first (OR = 0.45, 95% CI: 0.36, 0.57) and second (OR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.57, 0.91) physical capital tertiles had significantly lower adjusted odds of CMR than those in the highest tertile. There was not a significant patterning of CMR by ethnicity/race for women or men, or by physical capital for women.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings suggest that for Colombian adults CMR is patterned by SES; these associations differ by sex/gender.

The tax-free year in Iceland: A natural experiment to explore the impact of a short-term increase in labor supply on the risk of heart attacks

Evidence is mixed on whether society-wide economic conditions affect cardiovascular health and the reasons for the suggested relationship are largely untested. We explore whether a short-term increase in labor supply affects the probability of acute myocardial infarctions, using a natural experiment in Iceland. In 1987 personal income taxes were temporarily reduced to zero, resulting in an overall increase in labor supply. We merge and analyze individual-level, registry-based data on earnings and AMIs including all Icelandic men and women aged 45-74 during the period 1982-1992. The results support the prominent hypothesis of increased work as a mechanism explaining worsening heart health in upswings, for men aged 45-64 who were self-employed. We furthermore find a larger increase in probability of AMIs during the tax-free year in men aged 45-54 than men aged 55-64.
