Abstract
PURPOSE Differential Item Functioning (DIF), an item malfunctioning, causes Differential Test Functioning (DTF), thus biasing questionnaire measures. The current study evaluates the relationship between DIF and DTF for the Barthel Index and the Functional Independence Measure, likely the most used disability measures. The aim is to understand under which conditions DIF can be ignored as its DTF is negligible. METHODS A simulation study was run. Disability measures were obtained for the Barthel Index and FIM motor domain using Rasch analysis with previously published item calibrations. Several DIF scenarios have been assessed. DTF was tolerable if ≤0.50 logits. RESULTS Simulations showed that the larger the DIF, the larger the DTF and that, keeping the overall DIF constant, the total number of items with DIF does not affect DTF. DIF of the items with the lowest or highest calibrations is the most dangerous. The DIF of central items should be so massive to matter in DTF terms that it is unlikely to happen in practice. The FIM robustness to DIF is better than that of the Barthel Index. CONCLUSIONS The FIM and the Barthel Index show remarkable robustness to DIF. Thanks to this feature, sample invariant, generalisable disability measures are available.

Abstract
Purpose: The present article summarises the characteristics of Rasch's theory, providing an original metrological model for persons' measurements. Properties describing the person "as a whole" are key outcome variables in Medicine. This is particularly true in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, targeting the person's interaction with the outer world. Such variables include independence, pain, fatigue, balance, and the like. These variables can only be observed through behaviours of various complexity, deemed representative of a given "latent" person's property. So how to infer its "quantity"? Usually, behaviours (items) are scored ordinally, and their "raw" scores are summed across item lists (questionnaires). The limits and flaws of scores (i.e., multidimensionality, non-linearity) are well known, yet they still dominate the measurement in Medicine.Conclusions: Through Rasch's theory and statistical analysis, scores are transformed and tested for their capacity to respect fundamental measurement axioms. Rasch analysis returns the linear measure of the person's property ("ability") and the item's calibrations ("difficulty"), concealed by the raw scores. The difference between a person's ability and item difficulty determines the probability that a "pass" response is observed. The discrepancy between observed scores and the ideal measures (i.e., the residual) invites diagnostic reasoning. In a companion article, advanced applications of Rasch modelling are illustrated. Implications for rehabilitationQuestionnaires' ordinal scores are poor approximations of measures. The Rasch analysis turns questionnaires' scores into interval measures, provided that its assumptions are respected.Thanks to the Rasch analysis, accurate measures of independence, pain, fatigue, cognitive capacities and other whole person's variables of paramount importance in rehabilitation are available.The current work is addressed to rehabilitation professionals looking for an introduction to interpreting published results based on Rasch analysis.The first of a series of two, the present article illustrates the most common graphic and numeric outputs found in published papers presenting the Rasch analysis of questionnaires.

Abstract
Our purpose in this study was to provide additional psychometric evidence of the Quality of Life for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (QOLASD-C) scale. We used Rasch modeling to investigate the QOLASD-C functioning, the characteristics of the items comprising the scale, and the item functioning across subgroups of children with ASD based on gender and race/ethnicity. Results showed that QOLASD-C was unidimensional, met the local independence assumption, and measured quality of life (QOL). The items showed excellent fit to the model and good discriminating ability between low and high QOL. Most items showed a moderate difficulty level. No differential item functioning was observed based on children's gender and race/ethnicity. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Abstract
The Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (ISYQOL) is a validated health-related quality of life (HRQOL) questionnaire for teenagers with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). We culturally-adapted ISYQOL to traditional Chinese (ISYQOL-TC) and then recruited 133 conservatively treated teenagers with AIS to complete the ISYQOL-TC and the Chinese version of the Scoliosis Research Society-22 revised (SRS-22r) questionnaire, nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7), and numeric pain rating scale (NPRS). They repeated ISYQOL-TC two weeks later. The internal consistency, unidimensionality, and test-retest reliability were measured using the Cronbach's alpha, Rasch measurement models, and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC3,1), respectively. The concurrent validity of the ISYQOL-TC with SRS-22r, and its construct validity with other questionnaires were evaluated using Spearman correlation coefficients. The ISYQOL-TC demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.90 and 0.89 for items 1-13 and items 1-20), and excellent test-retest reliability (ICC3,1 = 0.95-0.96). The Rasch analysis supported the unidimensionality of all 20 items in ISYQOL-TC. The ISYQOL-TC percentage scores were positively correlated with SRS-22r total scores (r = 0.65; p < 0.05), but were negatively related to PHQ-9, GAD-7, and NPRS scores (r = -0.46 to -0.39; p < 0.01). Collectively, the ISYQOL-TC is a reliable and valid instrument for evaluating HRQOL in Chinese teenagers with AIS.

Abstract
Idiopathic scoliosis is common in adulthood and can impact patients' physical and psychological health. The Scoliosis Research Society-22 Questionnaire (SRS-22) has been designed to assess health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in idiopathic scoliosis, and it is the most used disease-specific outcome tool from adolescence to adulthood. More recently, the Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (ISYQOL) international questionnaire was developed, which performs better than SRS-22 in adolescent spinal deformities. However, the ISYQOL questionnaire has never been tested in adults. This study compares the construct validity of ISYQOL and SRS-22 with the Rasch analysis (partial credit model). We recruited 150 adults and 50 adolescents with scoliosis (≥30° Cobb). SRS-22, but not ISQYOL, showed disordered categories and one item not fitting the Rasch model. A 21-item SRS-22 version with revised categories was arranged and further compared to ISYQOL. Both questionnaires showed multidimensionality, and some items (SRS-22 in a greater number) functioned differently in persons of different ages. However, the artefacts caused by multidimensionality and differential functioning had a low impact on the questionnaires' measures. The construct validity of ISYQOL International and the revised SRS-22 are comparable. Both questionnaires (but not the original SRS-22) can return measures of disease burden in adults with scoliosis.

Abstract
Physical and psychological health concerns have been raised due to either spine deformity or orthotic treatment in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. To determine whether orthotic bracing duration affects psychological stress and health-related quality of life, a sample of 46 patients (8M, 38F, aged 11-17 years, regularly treated with bracing) with moderate or moderate to severe idiopathic scoliosis were separated into two groups based on whether their treatment duration was up to six months or longer. The brace-related levels of stress and quality of life were investigated in both groups by using the Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire and the Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life, respectively. The questionnaire scores were categorized as low, mean, and high. Our statistical analysis considered the proportion of patients falling into the three categories and the difference in crude score rates between the two groups. Values were considered significant at p < 0.05. The proportion of patients with brace-related stress and impaired quality of life was significantly lower in the group treated longer compared to the group that had only received treatment for up to six months (chi-square test, p < 0.0001). Overall, mean ± SD BSSQ scored 8.72 ± 4.91 and 12.89 ± 4.65 in group 1 and group 2, respectively (Mann-Whitney U test, p = 0.008), while ISYQoL scored 19.94 ± 8.21 and 16.07 ± 6.12, respectively. We argue that the differences could depend on both the physical and psychological adaptation patients make to their brace and that more support should be provided to patients when they start to wear their brace.

Abstract
The Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Mini-BESTest), a 14-item scale, has high content validity for balance assessment. This study further examines the construct validity of the Mini-BESTest with an emphasis on its measurement invariance. The Mini-BESTest was administered to 292 neurological patients in two sessions (before and after rehabilitation) and evaluated with the Rasch analysis (Many-Facet Rating Scale Model: persons, items, sessions). Categories' order and fit to the model were assessed. Next, maps, dimensionality, and differential item functioning (DIF) were examined for construct validity evaluation. DIF was inspected for several clinically important variables, including session, diagnosis, and assistive devices. Mini-BESTest items had ordered categories and fitted the Rasch model. The item map did not flag severe construct underrepresentation. The dimensionality analysis showed that another variable extraneous to balance affected the score of a few items. However, this multidimensionality had only a modest impact on measures. Session did not cause DIF. DIF for assistive devices affected six items and caused a severe measurement artefact. The measurement artefact caused by DIF for diagnosis was negligible. The Mini-BESTest returns interval measures with robust construct validity and measurement invariance. However, caution should be used when comparing Mini-BESTest measures obtained with and without assistive devices.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN A prospective study. PURPOSE To obtain the results of four body image questionnaires analyzed for validity in Korean and compare them to radiographic findings and quality of life scores. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE Each of the four body image questionnaires has been studied, but comparative studies of each other are rare. METHODS Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients ages 10 to 19 years completed the Korean version of the Quality of Life Profile for Spinal Deformities (K-QLPSD), the Scoliosis Research Society-22 self-image subscale (K-SRS-22-si), Korean version of the Spinal Appearance Questionnaire (K-SAQ), Korean version of the Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire-Scoliosis (K-BIDQ-S), and Korean version of the Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (K-ISYQOL). Four body image questionnaires were compared with K-ISYQOL and radiographic major curve magnitude, coronal balance, and sagittal balance. Spearman's correlation was performed to compare the four body image questionnaires. RESULTS The study included 84 AIS patients, with a mean age of 12.6 years and a major Cobb angle of 29.4°. The four surveys were correlated with major curve magnitude and K-ISYQOL. K-SAQ and K-BIDQ-S were correlated better than K-QLPSD, and K-SRS-22-si was correlated with K-ISYQOL. The four surveys were moderately correlated with major curve magnitude, but there was no correlation with age, coronal balance, and sagittal balance. CONCLUSIONS K-SAQ and K-BIDQ-S correlate better with K-ISYQOL than K-QLPSD and K-SRS-22-si.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess if behavior and emotional function, as measured by the Pearson Behavioral Assessment Survey for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2) in patients and parents, changes with differing treatment protocols in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). One previous study showed abnormal BASC-2 scores in a substantial number of patients diagnosed with AIS; however, no study has assessed how these scores change over the course of treatment. AIS patients aged 12 to 21 years completed the BASC-2. The 176-item questionnaire was administered to subjects at enrollment, assessing behavioral and emotional problems across 16 subscales of 5 domains: school problems, internalizing problems, inattention/hyperactivity, emotional symptoms index, and personal adjustment. Parents were given an equivalent assessment survey. Surveys were administered again after 2 years. Subject treatment groups (bracing, surgery, and observation) were established at enrollment. Patients were excluded if they did not complete the BASC-2 at both time points. Forty-six patients met the inclusion criteria, with 13 patients in the surgical, 20 in the bracing, and 13 in the observation treatment groups. At enrollment, 26% (12/46) of subjects with AIS had a clinically significant score in 1 or more subscales, and after 2 years 24% (11/46) of subjects reported a clinically significant score in at least 1 subscale (P = .8). There were no significant differences in scores between enrollment and follow-up in any treatment group. Similar to what was reported in a previous study, only 36% (4/11) of patients had clinically significant scores reported by both patient and parent, conversely 64% (7/11) of parents were unaware of their child's clinically significant behavioral and emotional problems. Common patient-reported subscales for clinically significant and at-risk scores at enrollment included anxiety (24%; 11/46), hyperactivity (24%; 11/46), attention problems (17%; 8/46), and self-esteem (17%; 8/46). At 2-year follow-up, the most commonly reported subscales were anxiety (28%; 13/46), somatization (20%; 9/46), and self-esteem (30%; 14/46). Patients with AIS, whether observed, braced or treated surgically, showed no significant change in behavior and emotional distress over the course of their treatment, or compared with each other at 2-year follow-up.

Abstract
This study aims to test the construct validity and reliability of the Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with assistive Technology 2.0 (QUEST)-device, an eight-item questionnaire for measuring satisfaction with assistive devices. We collected 250 questionnaires from 79 patients and 32 caregivers. One QUEST was completed for each assistive device. Five assistive device types were included. QUEST was tested with the Rasch analysis (Many-Facet Rating Scale Model: persons, items, and device type). Most patients were affected by neurological disabilities, and most questionnaires were about mobility devices. All items fitted the Rasch model (InfitMS range: 0.88-1.1; OutfitMS: 0.84-1.28). However, the ceiling effect of the questionnaire was large (15/111 participants totalled the maximum score), its targeting poor (respondents mean measure: 1.90 logits), and its reliability was 0.71. The device classes had different calibrations (range: -1.18 to 1.26 logits), and item 3 functioned differently in patients and caregivers. QUEST satisfaction measures have low reliability and weak construct validity. Lacking invariance, the QUEST total score is unsuitable for comparing the satisfaction levels of users of different device types. The differential item functioning suggests that the QUEST could also be problematic for comparing satisfaction in patients and caregivers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND CONTEXT Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) can significantly alter the quality of life of adolescents. Some of the available questionnaires in French measuring the quality of life in this population show weak psychometric properties. The newly developed Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (ISYQOL) questionnaire promises better properties. PURPOSE To provide a French-Canadian version of the ISYQOL and to verify its psychometric characteristics. STUDY DESIGN Prospective validation of a cross-cultural adaptation of the ISYQOL questionnaire. PATIENT SAMPLE A total of 111 participants with idiopathic scoliosis (77.5% female, 10-18 years old, mean Cobb angle=28°) were included in the study. OUTCOME MEASURE The French-Canadian version of the Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (ISYQOL-F) questionnaire. MATERIALS AND METHODS The ISYQOL was translated into French using a forward-backward approach. We then verified the understanding of the translated items with two scoliosis experts and 10 adolescents. Afterward, 111 adolescents with IS were recruited by convenience at the scoliosis clinic and they completed the ISYQOL on three occasions (before seeing the specialist, 1 week, and 2 weeks after). Cronbach's alpha, intra-class (ICC), and Pearson correlation coefficients were used to respectively determine internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and concurrent validity with the SRS-22r and SF-12. The standard error of measurement (SEM) and 95% confidence minimal detectable change (MDC95) were also calculated. The ceiling effect was quantified as the percentage of participants who scored the maximum on ISYQOL-F. RESULTS The ISYQOL-F showed good internal consistency with a Cronbach alpha of 0.81 and 0.85 respectively for items 1-13 (n=55; ISYQOL-F mean score ± SD = 63.9±13.5) and 1-20 (n=56; ISYQOL-F mean score ± SD=60.7±10.3). Test-retest reliability was excellent (ICC3,1=0.94). The SEM is 3.1 and the MDC95 is 8.6. Correlations between ISYQOL-F and SRS-22r and between ISYQOL-F and SF-12 were moderate for total scores (r=0.56 and 0.50 respectively, p<.001), but low for each domain (between 0.20 and 0.48, p<.05). No significant ceiling effects were observed for ISYQOL-F (≤2.5%). In contrast, ceiling effects ranged from 3.6% to 30.6% for SRS-22r and 0%-68.5% for SF-12. CONCLUSIONS The internal consistency and reliability of ISYQOL-F are good. The total score correlates moderately with the SRS-22r and SF-12. Unlike SRS-22r, the ISYQOL-F does not appear to have a ceiling effect. The ISYQOL-F may thus be suitable to assess quality of life in a population of French-Canadian adolescents with IS.

Abstract
Background Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) are a growing group of rare genetic disorders. The most common CDG is phosphomannomutase 2 (PMM2)-CDG which often has a severe clinical presentation and life-limiting consequences. There are no approved therapies for this condition. Also, there are no validated disease-specific quality of life (QoL) scales to assess the heterogeneous clinical burden of PMM2-CDG which presents a challenge for the assessment of the disease severity and the impact of a certain treatment on the course of the disease. Aim and methods This study aimed to identify the most impactful clinical signs and symptoms of PMM2-CDG, and specific patient and observer reported outcome measures (PROMs and ObsROMs, respectively) that can adequately measure such impact on patients’ QoL. The most burdensome signs and symptoms were identified through input from the CDG community using a survey targeting PMM2-CDG families and experts, followed by family interviews to understand the real burden of these symptoms in daily life. The list of signs and symptoms was then verified and refined by patient representatives and medical experts in the field. Finally, a literature search for PROMs and ObsROMs used in other rare or common diseases with similar signs and symptoms to those of PMM2-CDG was performed. Results Twenty-four signs/symptoms were identified as the most impactful throughout PMM2-CDG patients’ lifetime. We found 239 articles that included tools to measure those community-selected PMM2-CDG symptoms. Among them, we identified 80 QoL scales that address those signs and symptoms and, subsequently, their psychometric quality was analysed. These scales could be applied directly to the PMM2-CDG population or adapted to create the first PMM2-CDG-specific QoL questionnaire. Conclusion Identifying the impactful clinical manifestations of PMM2-CDG, along with the collection of PROMs/ObsROMs assessing QoL using a creative and community-centric methodology are the first step towards the development of a new, tailored, and specific PMM2-CDG QoL questionnaire. These findings can be used to fill a gap in PMM2-CDG clinical development. Importantly, this methodology is transferable to other CDG and rare diseases with multiple signs and symptoms. Abstract
This review presents the state of the art according to the current evidence on nonoperative treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, focusing on bracing. The definition of braces for the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and a short history are provided. The analysis includes biomechanics, types, existing classifications, indications for treatment, time of brace wear and weaning, adherence, three-dimensional modeling, use of ultrasound imaging for bracing, management of treatment, issue of immediate in-brace correction, and documentation of the outcomes usually assessed for brace treatment, including the quality-of-life issues. According to the current evidence, there are two randomized control trials in favor of bracing. There are insufficient data on the superiority of one brace over another, although it is possible to classify and grade braces for efficacy from nonrigid to rigid and very rigid. Nevertheless, there is consensus on patients' management on the need for teamwork focusing on adherence to treatment, acceptability, and family and patient involvement.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the reliability and validity of the Persian version of the Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (P-ISYQOL) questionnaire. METHODS Forward/backward translations and cultural adaption processes of the ISYQOL questionnaire into Persian were conducted by an expert committee. We recruited 178 adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK) and 103 age-matched adolescents with no spinal deformity. Reliability was assessed by evaluating internal consistency and test-retest reliability using Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Convergent construct validity was assessed by measuring the association between the ISYQOL and revised 22-item Scoliosis Research Society (SRS-22r) questionnaires scores. Known-groups construct validity was assessed regarding curve magnitude, deformity, age, sex, and treatment type. RESULTS Cronbach's alpha and ICC for P-ISYQOL total score was 0.8 and 0.9, respectively. An acceptable association was observed between P-ISYQOL and SRS-22r total scores (r = - 0.5, p < 0.01). The P-ISYQOL could discriminate between adolescents with spinal deformities and adolescents with no spinal deformity as well as those with different types of deformity and treatment (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The P-ISYQOL is a reliable and valid survey to assess the outcomes of adolescents with spinal deformities. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level I-diagnostic studies.

Abstract
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK) are the most common types of spinal deformities in adolescents, and both have substantial ramifications on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) parameters. Various questionnaires have been developed to assess HRQoL in age-group populations with spinal deformity. Nevertheless, there remains a lack of consensus across the literature as to which instrument is the most suitable for evaluating the HRQoL of this cohort. Thus, this literature review was conducted to present disease-specific questionnaires for children and adolescents with AIS and SK to provide their psychometric characteristics (validity, reliability, and responsiveness) across different languages. A literature search was performed in the Medline (PubMed), Scopus, EMBASE, and Google Scholar databases. Studies that outlined the development and application of questionnaires evaluating HRQoL of children and adolescents with spinal deformity were included, and data on their validity and reliability in different translated languages were collected. A total of 10 disease-specific questionnaires were identified. Except for one questionnaire that was a proxy-reported measure, the other questionnaires were self-reported. We determined that selecting the proper questionnaire for clinical and research purposes requires careful consideration of various factors including the type of treatment intervention planned as well as various patient demographic factors. For children with early-onset scoliosis, the ideal questionnaire to evaluate their HRQoL is the Early-Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire-24. For adolescents with AIS and SK who are potential candidates for surgical intervention, the use of Scoliosis Research Society-22, Scoliosis Japanese-27, and Quality of Life Profile Spinal Deformity questionnaires is appropriate. For patients who are under nonsurgical treatment, the Brace Questionnaire and Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life questionnaires can be utilized. Nonetheless, when the specific intent of a study is to evaluate the self-image perception of patients, the use of drawing-based questionnaires may be the optimal choice.

Abstract
Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) assessment is considered among the most relevant outcome measures following conservative and surgical interventions for various spinal conditions. Several questions are available to evaluate HRQOL in these conditions. A more recent Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (ISYQOL) questionnaire was developed for this purpose and showed high validity in measuring HRQOL.To translate and adapt the ISYQOL questionnaire into Arabic language (ISYQOL-Ar) and evaluate its validity and reliability, and to correlate it with the validated revised Scoliosis Research Society (SRS-22r)'s Arabic questionnaire in a cross-sectional multicenter study.The ISYQOL was translated, back-translated, and reviewed by an expert committee. Reliability assessment for the questionnaire domains was performed using Cronbach's alpha. For construct validation, the Pearson's correlation coefficient was used.A total of 115 patients were enrolled in the study and completed the ISYQOL-Ar and Arabic SRS-22r questionnaires. A total of 72 patients (63%) completed the first set of questionnaires, and 2 weeks later, 63 patients (55%) completed both sets of questionnaires, with 15.8 a mean age, 39.5° mean Cobb angle of 88.9% females. ISYQOL-Ar showed excellent validity, good reliability, and internal consistency for spine health and brace wear, with Cronbach's alpha > 0.6, similar to SRS-22r in the same cohort. The correlation was significant between ISYQOL-Ar and Arabic SRS-22r (Pearson's coefficient = 0.708, P < .001).The ISYQOL-Ar questionnaire is a reliable and valid outcome measure for the assessment of young patients with spinal deformity among the Arabic-speaking population.

This study aimed to compare the Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life Questionnaire (ISYQOL-PL) versus the Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) questionnaire scores evaluating the validity of the concurrent and known-groups. Eighty-one girls (mean age 13.5 ± 1.8 years) with idiopathic scoliosis (IS) with a mean Cobb angle of 31.0 (±10.0) degrees were examined, all treated with a corrective TLSO brace for an average duration of 2.6 (±1.9) years. The patients’ scores were compared as follows: (1) age: ≤13 years vs. >13 years); (2) scoliosis severity: mild (Cobb angle 10–30°) vs. moderate (Cobb angle > 30°); (3) single curve pattern vs. double curve pattern. Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the strength of the association between ISYQOL-PL and SRS-22 scores. t-tests were applied to assess if the ISYQOL-PL measure and SRS-22 total score were significantly different in the different groups of patients. The concurrent validity analysis showed a moderate correlation (Lin pccc = 0.47). The ISYQOL-PL showed a significantly better quality of life in mild than moderate scoliosis. The severity of scoliosis but not the age or the curve pattern demonstrated a direct statistically significant effect on patients’ quality of life only when evaluated using the ISYQOL-PL.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Methodological. OBJECTIVE Turkish validity and reliability study of Scoliosis Research Society-30 (SRS-30) questionnaire. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA SRS-30 is the most current questionnaire of SRS, which is widely used in the evaluation of the treatment of patients with idiopathic scoliosis. There is no validity and reliability study for the Turkish language. METHODS All translation and cross-cultural adaptation stages of the SRS-30 English version to Turkish were implemented. SRS-30 Turkish and Short Form-36 questionnaires were administered to 96 patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis simultaneously. Two weeks later, the SRS-30-Turkish version was applied again. Internal validity was examined using the Rasch model, and external construct validity (convergent validity) was evaluated with the Spearman rho correlation test. Person Separation Index was used for reliability. The internal consistency was analyzed with Cronbach alpha. For test re-test reliability, intraclass correlation coefficient between the two measurements was calculated. RESULTS As a result of the Rasch analysis, it was observed that the Turkish version of SRS-30 has a multidimensional structure and the disordered threshold problem was observed in some items. Overall fit is provided for each of the four sub-dimensions of SRS-30 Turkish. There was no difference in the functioning of the items in terms of gender and age groups. The lowest Person Separation Index value was obtained with 0.539 in the satisfaction of the treatment sub-dimension. Cronbach alpha values were over 0.70 for all domains. The intraclass correlation coefficient value was found in satisfaction with management dimension (0.463) and above 0.60 in other dimensions. CONCLUSION It was concluded that the SRS-30 Turkish questionnaire was valid and reliable in evaluating the treatment of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Considering the studies related to SRS scales in the literature, especially those applied Rasch analysis, it is seen that the reply categories of the items should be reviewed.Level of Evidence: 2.

Abstract
We aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the adapted Korean version of the Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (ISYQOL) questionnaire. Translation/retranslation of the English version of ISYQOL was conducted, and all steps of the cross-cultural adaptation process were performed. The Korean version of the ISYQOL and the previously validated Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) questionnaire were mailed to 120 consecutive idiopathic scoliosis patients wearing brace. Factor analysis and reliability assessment by kappa statistics of agreement for each item, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach's α were conducted. Construct validity was also evaluated by comparing the responses of ISYQOL with the responses of SRS-22 by using Pearson's correlation coefficient. Factor analysis extracted 2 factors. All items had a kappa statistics of agreement greater than 0.6. The ISYQOL showed good test/re-test reliability (ICC = 0.812). Internal consistency of Cronbach's α was found to be very good (α = 0.873). The Korean version of ISYQOL showed good significant correlation with SRS-22 total score and with single SRS-22 domains scores. The adapted Korean version of the ISYQOL was successfully translated and showed acceptable measurement properties, and as such, is considered suitable for outcome assessments in the Korean speaking patients with idiopathic scoliosis.

Abstract
Attempts to optimize monitoring of brace adherence prescribed to adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (IS) have generally relied on sensors. Sensors, however, are intrusive and do not allow the assessment of psychological and physical consequences of brace use that might underlie poor adherence. Mobile applications have emerged as alternatives to monitor brace compliance. However, the feasibility and utility of these app-based systems to assess key psychological and physical domains associated with non-adherence remain unexplored. This feasibility study aims to test the usability, acceptability, and clinical utility of an app-based system that monitors brace use and related psychological and physical factors. Forty adolescents with IS daily respond to the app for 90 days. The patient responses may generate clinical alarms (e.g., brace non-adherence, discomfort, or distress) that will be sent daily to the medical team. Primary outcomes will be app usability, acceptability, and response rates. Secondary outcomes will include brace adherence, the number of side effects reported, number and type of clinical alarms, stress, quality of life, perceived health status, and mood. If accepted by patients and clinicians, apps may allow rapid detection and response to undesired events in adolescents undergoing brace treatment.

Abstract
Background The Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (ISYQOL) questionnaire is used to evaluate health-related quality of life in adolescents with Idiopathic Scoliosis. The study aimed to undertake the process of cultural adaptation of the ISYQOL questionnaire into Simplified Chinese. Methods Translate from Italian into Simplified Chinese. It involved 138 adolescents whose Cobb angle ranged between 20 and 40 degrees, 50 wearing the brace and 88 not wearing the brace. Statistical analysis calculated the reliability, floor effects, and ceiling effects of the ISYQOL. After that, construct validity was measured by analyzing the ISYQOL relationship Scoliosis Research Society-22 patient Questionnaire (SRS-22). Results There were no floor or ceiling effects in the ISYQOL questionnaire. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient evaluated for Internal consistency was 0.75 in the no-treated group and 0.88 in the brace-treated group. Intraclass correlation coefficients assessed with the use of the test-retest method were 0.72 in the no-treated group and 0.80 in the brace-treated group. A strong relationship exists between the ISYQOL measure and SRS-22 scores (rho = 0.62; p < 0.01), reflecting the high validity of the questionnaires. Both ISYQOL and SRS-22 scores showed no statistical difference between groups wearing and not wearing the brace (p > 0.05). Conclusions Trans-cultural validation in Chinses language showed the reliability and validity of the ISYQOL.

Abstract
The study aimed to carry on the process of the cultural adaptation of the Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life Questionnaire (ISYQOL) into Polish (ISYQOL-PL). The a priori hypothesis was: the ISYQOL-PL questionnaire is reliable and appropriate for adolescents with a spinal deformity. Fifty-six adolescents (mean age 13.8 ± 1.9) with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) with a mean Cobb angle 29.1 (±9.7) and two with Scheuermann juvenile kyphosis (SJK) with a kyphosis angle 67.5 (±17.7) degrees were enrolled. All patients had been wearing a corrective TLSO brace for an average duration of 2.3 (±1.8) years. The Institutional Review Board approved the study. The cross-cultural adaptation of the ISYQOL-PL was performed following the guidelines set up by the International Quality of Life Assessment Project. The reliability was assessed using internal consistency (the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient) and test–retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient ICC2.1, CI = 95%); moreover, floor and ceiling effects were calculated. The internal consistency was satisfactory (Cronbach’s alpha coefficient 0.8). The test–retest revealed high reliability with the value of ICC2.1 for the entire group 0.90, CI (0.84 to 0.94). There was neither floor nor ceiling effect for the ISYQOL-PL overall score. The ISYQOL-PL is reliable and can be used in adolescents with spinal deformity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify the life domains that are most frequently reported to be affected in scoliosis patients undergoing brace treatment. METHODS A search within the PubMed database was conducted and a total of 60 publications were selected. We classified the studies based on the methods used to measure patients' quality of life (QoL) and categorized the life domains reported to be affected. RESULTS Self-image/body configuration was the most reported affected domain of patients' QoL, identified in 32 papers, whilst mental health/stress was the second most reported affected domain. Mental health was identified in 11 papers, and 11 papers using the BSSQ questionnaire reported medium stress amongst their participants. Vitality was the third most reported affected domain, identified in 12 papers. CONCLUSIONS Our review indicates that scoliotic adolescents treated with bracing suffer in their quality of life most from psychological burdens. To improve these patients' life quality, more attention should be focussed on supporting their mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to the importance of assessing quality of life (QoL) in healthy and ill adolescents, the evaluation of psychometric properties of these questionnaires is important. OBJECTIVE To investigate the application of Rasch analysis in psychometric assessment studies on adolescents' QoL instruments, and to evaluate the quality of reporting Rasch parameters in these studies. METHODS This systematic review was conducted by searching for papers in electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and Scopus until December 2018. RESULTS After screening 122 papers, 31 remained in the study. Around 68% of the studies used the Rasch analysis for instrument testing and 32% for the development of new instruments. In 77.4% of studies, both classical and Rasch methods were used parallel to data analysis. In 32.2% of studies, healthy adolescents were the main target group. The most commonly used instrument in Rasch studies was, KIDSCREEN, administered in different countries. Six Rasch parameters were reported with a higher percentage in the studies. Major reported parameters of Rasch analysis were application of the software program (96.7%), test of item fit to the Rasch model (93.5%), unidimensionality (80.6%), type of the identified mathematical Rasch model (74.1%), threshold (58%) and differential item functioning (54.8%). Based on the psychometric evaluation of the QoL instruments, 71% of studies showed acceptable results. CONCLUSION The application of the Rasch model for psychometric assessment of adolescents' QoL questionnaires has increased in recent decades. But, there is still no strong and commonly used critical appraisal tool or guideline for the evaluation of these papers.

Abstract
[Purpose] We developed a prototype version of the Self-Assessment Burden Scale-Motor as a screening questionnaire for the need of care based on the evaluation of patients' activities of daily living. The questionnaire is comprised of seven items, each of which is scored on a 7-point Likert scale. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the questionnaire using Rasch analysis. [Participants and Methods] A total of 200 individuals completed the questionnaire. Rasch analysis to investigate the rating scale structure and examine the structural validity and reliability of the scale. The unidimensionality of the items was examined using the mean square infit values and principal component analysis of residuals. The separation reliability of the scale was also examined. [Results] The rating scale structure can be improved by collapsing several categories (from seven categories to four categories). Unidimensionality was found for seven items. The separation reliability was acceptable for item calibrations and persons. [Conclusion] Inclusion of seven items with a 4-category rating scale was appropriate for the Self-Assessment Burden Scale-Motor questionnaire. Future studies should examine the intra-rater reliability and the criterion-related validity in more depth and develop a new scale to evaluate cognitive function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aesthetics is recognized as a main outcome in idiopathic scoliosis (IS) treatment, but to date, there is no criterion standard for physicians' evaluation. Trunk Aesthetic Clinical Evaluation (TRACE) is a simple 12-point ordinal scale to quantify symmetry as a proxy of aesthetics. TRACE is already diffused worldwide and has been used in clinical research. OBJECTIVE We aimed to validate TRACE and improve it with Rasch analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study involved an observational Rasch analysis validation of an evaluation tool in outpatient rehabilitation centres. From a clinical database, we randomly selected patients who had IS, were age 10 to 18, had brace prescription at first evaluation, and had at least 2 consultations. Rasch analysis (partial credit model) was used. Differential item functioning (DIF) was assessed for age, sex, disease severity, bracing and treatment. The median was chosen to dichotomize disease severity and bracing. We removed 64 outlier participants (4%). RESULTS We included 1553 participants (1334 females; mean [SD] age 13 [1.7] years old). TRACE items showed ordered thresholds and proper fit to the Rasch model. The score-to-measure conversion table showed proper length (range -4.55 to 4.79 logit) with a mean (SE) measure of -0.52 (0.04) logit. The principal component analysis supported the TRACE unidimensionality. The TRACE was free from DIF for age, sex and bracing. CONCLUSIONS The TRACE ordinal scale has been converted into a Rasch-consistent, interval-level measure of trunk aesthetics in IS patients and can be used to compare different populations. Its main flaw is low reliability, likely because of the small number of items. TRACE can be used as an outcome measure and in everyday clinical evaluation of IS, even if new developments of the scale are advised.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the validity of the Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (ISYQOL) questionnaire with that of the Scoliosis Research Society 22 (SRS22) questionnaire, the criterion standard for health-related quality of life (HRQOL) measurement in adolescents with spinal deformities. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Outpatient clinic. SUBJECTS Consecutive adolescents (10-18 years; 541 wearing brace) affected by idiopathic scoliosis (642 females, 100 males) or hyperkyphosis (87 females, 109 males). INTERVENTIONS NA. MAIN MEASURES The Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho) between ISYQOL and SRS22 was used to assess ISYQOL concurrent validity. Sex, age, severity, bracing, trunk appearance and deformity type were assessed for known-groups validity. Cohen's d quantified between-groups differences. Multiple linear regression exploring the effect of sex, age, body mass index (BMI), severity, bone age, trunk appearance, physiotherapy, bracing and sport on HRQOL of scoliosis patients was used to assess concurrent validity further. RESULTS Satisfactory correlations were found between ISYQOL and SRS22 (scoliosis, rho = 0.71; kyphosis, rho = 0.56). Known-groups validity analysis showed that ISYQOL detects all the between-groups differences detected by SRS22 and a males-females difference undetected by SRS22. ISYQOL Cohen's d was larger than SRS22 Cohen's d in three between-groups comparisons and similar in the others. Brace, sport and scoliosis severity were independently related to ISYQOL (linear regression: R2 = 0.23; p < 0.001). Brace, sport and physiotherapy were related to SRS22 (R2 = 0.17). CONCLUSIONS ISYQOL showed high validity when used to measure HRQOL in adolescents with spinal deformities. Moreover, ISYQOL performs better than SRS22, having better known-groups validity and (contrary to SRS22) detecting the impact of disease severity on HRQOL.

Abstract
Background/objective The ADL-focused Occupation-based Neurobehavioral Evaluation (A-ONE) can be used to evaluate both performances of activities of daily living (ADL) tasks and neurobehavioural problems that interfere with ADL task performance among clients with neurological disorders. Research studies have demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties of the original version of the A-ONE as well as the Rasch analysed version. The aim of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the A-ONE (A-ONE J). Methods Rasch analysis was performed on data obtained from eight different hospitals in Japan on performances of 150 individuals diagnosed with a stroke based on the functional independence (FI) scale items. The rating scale structure was investigated and internal validity and reliability were examined. Unidimensionality of the items was examined by mean square infit values and principal component analysis of residuals. The targeting between person ability and item difficulty was explored, as well as the separation reliability. Finally, psychometric values and item difficulty hierarchies obtained in this study were compared to the original Rasch analysis of the A-ONE. Results The rating scale structure might be improved by collapsing two categories twice (from five categories to three categories). Unidimensionality of the items was obtained for 20 items. Targeting was acceptable, and separation reliability for item calibrations was high and acceptable for people.Conclusion/limitations: This study provides important information regarding the possibilities for revising the ordinal A-ONE J FI Scale, converting it into a unidimensional scale. Further study with increased and more diverse sample is needed.

Abstract
Purpose: To examine the validity and reliability of the Persian versions of the Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire-Deformity/Brace in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.Materials/methods: Persian forward/backward translation of the Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire-Deformity/Brace was produced, and all stages for a cross-cultural adaptation process were carried out based on the International Quality of Life Assessment guidelines. The measurements of internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed by Cronbach's α and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), respectively. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used to analyse the concurrent validity by comparison with the Scoliosis Research Society-22r questionnaire.Results: A total of 53 scoliosis patients (age 13.47 ± 1.78 years, Cobb angle 27.66 ± 11.77°) was included. The Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire-Deformity/Brace presented acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's α for both: 0.72) and ICCs (0.97 and 0.88, respectively). The Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire-Deformity showed no significant correlation with the Scoliosis Research Society-22r, while the Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire-Brace showed a significant correlation with the Scoliosis Research Society-22r total score, function/activity, self-image, and mental health dimensions (p < 0.01).Conclusions: The Persian Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire-Brace validly and reliably measures brace-related stress in AIS patients undergoing brace treatment.Implications for rehabilitationThe cross-cultural adaptation of the Persian version of the Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire was performed.The Persian-Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire has satisfactory internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and concurrent validity in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis.The Persian version of the Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire is suitable for clinical investigations.

Abstract
The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test is a common mobility measure in rehabilitation. With the instrumental TUG test (ITUG; i.e. the TUG measured by inertial measurement units, IMUs), several movement measures are newly available. However, the clinical meaning of these new measures is not totally clear. Aim of the current work is to evaluate the validity of different ITUG parameters as a measure of balance. Neurological patients (n = 122; 52 females; 89 older than 65 years) completed the TUG test with IMUs secured to their back. IMUs signals were used to split the TUG test in five phases (sit-to-stand, walk1, turn1, walk2 and turn-and-sit) and twelve movement parameters were obtained. Experienced clinicians administered the Mini-BESTest (MB) scale, a sound balance measure. The partial least square regression (PLSR) was used to explore the association between the ITUG variables and the MB measure. A PLSR model with twelve ITUG variables had satisfactory fit parameters (RMSEP: 11%; R2: 0.41, 95% CI: 0.28-0.54; regression line: 1, 95% CI: 0.78-1.22). Three ITUG variables (i.e. turn1 vertical angular velocity, turn1 duration and turn2 vertical angular velocity) were found to be the most important predictors of the MB measure. A PLSR model with the turning variables only had fit parameters comparable to that of the twelve variables model. Turning parameters from the TUG test are good predictors of the MB scale. The mean angular velocity during turning and the duration of the turning phase are thus proposed as a valid, ratio-level measures of balance in neurological patients.
