Molecular dynamics of n-dodecylammonium chloride in aqueous solutions investigated by 2H NMR and 1H NMR relaxometry

Physicochemical characterization of green sodium oleate-based formulations. Part 3. Molecular and collective dynamics in rodlike and wormlike micelles by proton nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation

HYPOTHESIS

Sodium oleate (NaOL) self-aggregates in water forming rodlike micelles with different length depending on NaOL concentration; when KCl is added wormlike micelles form, which entangle giving rise to a viscoelastic dispersion. It is expected that aggregates with different size and shape exhibit different internal and overall molecular motions and collective dynamics.

EXPERIMENTS

Two low viscosity NaOL/water and two viscoelastic NaOL/KCl/water formulations with different NaOL concentration (0.23 and 0.43 M) were investigated by ¹H fast field cycling NMR relaxometry over broad temperature and Larmor frequency ranges, after a first screening by ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy at high frequency.

FINDINGS

The analysis of the collected data indicated that fast conformational isomerization and rotation of NaOL about its long molecular axis and lateral diffusion of NaOL around the axis of the cylindrical aggregates are slightly affected by the aggregate shape and length. On the other hand, fluctuations of the local order director are quite different in the fluid and viscoelastic systems, reflecting the shape and size of the aggregates. Quantitative information was obtained on activation energy for fast internal and overall motions, correlation times and activation energy for lateral diffusion, and coherence length for collective order fluctuations.

Molecular Dynamics in the Lyophases of Copolymer P123 Investigated with FFC NMR Relaxometry

Associative block copolymers of the type (EO) _x(PO) _y(EO) _x (where EO and PO represent ethylene and propylene oxides, respectively) in aqueous solution have far reaching commercial applications such as solubilization, controlled-drug delivery, etc. The molecular dynamics of a self-associating triblock copolymer (EO)₂₀(PO)₇₀(EO)₂₀ (known as P123 with a molecular weight of ∼5800), in aqueous solution (D₂O), consisting of various lyotropic liquid crystalline phases such as isotropic micellar, cubic, hexagonal, and lamellar phases, is investigated using the fast field cycling nuclear magnetic resonance (FFC NMR) relaxometry technique in the Larmor frequency range from 5 kHz to 30 MHz. A nuclear spin-relaxation model consisting of chain modes (Rouse modes) and order fluctuation (OF) modes typical for polymers and liquid crystals, respectively, is considered to explain the observed proton magnetic relaxation dispersion (PMRD) data in the lyophases under investigation. The PMRD analysis in both isotropic micellar and cubic phases revealed a Rouse frequency dependence of spin-lattice relaxation rate ( R₁), i.e., R₁ ∝ -τ_s ln(ωτ_s), in the entire frequency range of study. Hexagonal and lamellar phase data show Rouse modes as well as OF modes, leaving the signature of the latter as R₁ ∝ ω^{- p}, where p ∼ 0.5 is typical for nematic mesogens. The activation energies were also determined from segmental correlation times in the lyophases of study. To the best of our knowledge, the present FFC NMR relaxometry study is unique and quantitative in unraveling molecular dynamics of the associative copolymer P123 in aqueous solution.

Self-diffusion studies by intra- and inter-molecular spin-lattice relaxometry using field-cycling: Liquids, plastic crystals, porous media, and polymer segments

Field-cycling NMR relaxometry is a well-established technique for probing molecular dynamics in a frequency range from typically a few kHz up to several tens of MHz. For the interpretation of relaxometry data, it is quite often assumed that the spin-lattice relaxation process is of an intra-molecular nature so that rotational fluctuations dominate. However, dipolar interactions as the main type of couplings between protons and other dipolar species without quadrupole moments can imply appreciable inter-molecular contributions. These fluctuate due to translational displacements and to a lesser degree also by rotational reorientations in the short-range limit. The analysis of the inter-molecular proton spin-lattice relaxation rate thus permits one to evaluate self-diffusion variables such as the diffusion coefficient or the mean square displacement on a time scale from nanoseconds to several hundreds of microseconds. Numerous applications to solvents, plastic crystals and polymers will be reviewed. The technique is of particular interest for polymer dynamics since inter-molecular spin-lattice relaxation diffusometry bridges the time scales of quasi-elastic neutron scattering and field-gradient NMR diffusometry. This is just the range where model-specific intra-coil mechanisms are assumed to occur. They are expected to reveal themselves by characteristic power laws for the time-dependence of the mean-square segment displacement. These can be favorably tested on this basis. Results reported in the literature will be compared with theoretical predictions. On the other hand, there is a second way for translational diffusion phenomena to affect the spin-lattice relaxation dispersion. If rotational diffusion of molecules is restricted, translational diffusion properties can be deduced even from molecular reorientation dynamics detected by intra-molecular spin-lattice relaxation. This sort of scenario will be relevant for adsorbates on surfaces or polymer segments under entanglement and chain connectivity constraints. Under such conditions, reorientations will be correlated with translational displacements leading to the so-called RMTD relaxation process (reorientation mediated by translational displacements). Applications to porous glasses, protein solutions, lipid bilayers, and clays will be discussed. Finally, we will address the intriguing fact that the various time limits of the segment mean-square displacement of polymers in some cases perfectly reproduce predictions of the tube/reptation model whereas the reorientation dynamics suggests strongly deviating power laws.

Dynamics of partially oriented L-phenylalanine-d(8) in the CsPFO/H(2)O lyotropic system via (2)H NMR relaxation studies

Dynamics of the l-phenylalanine-d(8) has been here investigated by analyzing the (2)H NMR spin-lattice relaxation times of this selectively deuterium enriched amino acid diluted in the cesium pentadecafluorooctanoate/water (CsPFO/H(2)O) lyotropic system both in the nematic (N(+)(D)) and in the lamellar (L(D)) phases. Information on the internal and overall molecular motions as well as on collective motions has been achieved by a global fitting procedure. The dynamic processes affecting this probe molecule reflect its particular conformational and interaction properties with respect to the lyotropic environment. The best reproduction of the experimental data is obtained by assuming free internal reorientations of the benzylic moiety, which results in diffusion constants of the same order of magnitude of the overall molecular spinning motion. Moreover, the contribution of collective motions (order director fluctuations and layer undulations) is estimated to be greater than that commonly observed by other techniques in lyotropic systems.

Headgroup Motion in a Lyotropic Lamellar Phase by Deuterium and Nitrogen-14 Relaxation Studies

Deuterium (2H) and nitrogen-14 (14N) NMR spectroscopy were used to investigate the molecular dynamics of a lyotropic liquid crystal. Deuterium spectral densities of motion for the C1 deuterated site on the chain of the molecule decylammonium chloride (DACl) at the Larmor frequency 61.4 MHz and those for the (14)N at the headgroup (NH(3)(+)) at 28.9 MHz are analyzed quantitatively in the lamellar phase of the DACl-d(11)/water binary system to shed light on the headgroup dynamics. The motional model used is the small step rotational diffusion for reorientations plus internal rotations of the methylene group in the strong collision limit. The tumbling motion of the long axis of the DACl molecule in the aggregates seems to be as rigorous as the molecular spinning motion, likely due to the proposed motional model. The similarity of deuterium spectral densities from the C1 and C2/C3 sites may indicate a relatively rigid unit of C1-C2-C3 in the backbone.
