NMR as a tool in the investigation of fundamental problems in ordered liquids

NMR of short-chain hydrocarbons in nematic and smectic a liquid crystals

The proton NMR spectra of ethane, propane, and n-butane codissolved and orientationally ordered in two liquid-crystal solvents that exhibit both nematic (N) and smectic A (SmA) phases (one of which also has a reentrant nematic (RN) phase) are analyzed using CMA-ES (covariance-matrix adaptation evolution strategy). To deal with problems arising from the broad liquid-crystal background signal, a smoothed experimental spectrum is fitted to a smoothed calculated spectrum. The ethane and propane dipolar couplings and anisotropic energy parameters scale with each other, and the n-butane couplings are assumed to behave likewise. This restriction on the relative values of the n-butane energy parameters facilitates a fit to the temperature dependence of the n-butane dipolar couplings, in which the six n-butane energy parameters (three for trans and three for gauche), the isotropic trans-gauche energy difference E(tg), and its temperature coefficient E(tg)', and the methyl CCH angle decrease are obtained. Unlike earlier studies, the fit does not employ a model for the anisotropic intermolecular potential. The nematic potential in the SmA phase of the liquid-crystal mixture 6OCB/8OCB is estimated by interpolated values obtained from the ethane spectra for the N and RN regions. Analysis of results for the SmA phase involves adding a nematic-smectic coupling prefactor and a smectic prefactor. Spectra obtained in the liquid-crystal 8OCB are calculated with no adjustable parameters, scaling the potentials using the ethane values, and the agreement between experiment and calculation is outstanding. Conformer populations are affected by the environment, and the isotropic solute-solvent interactions result in increased gauche populations, whereas anisotropic interactions increase the trans probability. The trans probability in the SmA phase is slightly lower than expected from the nematic results.

Deuterium NMR Investigation of the lyotropic phases of alkyl β-glycoside/D2O systems

We have investigated the phase behavior of four glycosides (βC8OGlc, βC8SGlc, βC10OGlc, βC8OGal) in water and D2O by optical polarizing microscopy and deuterium NMR. Previously published phase diagrams were evaluated by deuterium NMR, via monitoring D2O spectra, and confirmed the presence of the hexagonal, bicontinuous cubic, and lamellar phases in these glycosides. We have also shown the presence of the gel phase in (βC10OGlc) and observed the extensive supercooling of the lamellar phase to temperatures well below the Kraft line. While the main features of the phase diagrams were confirmed, some phase boundaries were found to be slightly different. Magnetically aligned spectra were also observed for relatively dilute samples for the hexagonal phase (βC8OGlc and βC8OGal) and the lamellar phase (βC8SGlc and βC10OGlc). The average number of bound water molecules per headgroup in the lamellar phase for the glycosides was determined by the systematic measurement of the quadrupolar splitting of D2O over a wide range of values of the (glycoside/water) molar ratio. The number of water molecules bound to the headgroup was found on average to be about 1.6-1.7 water molecules with no significant differences in this value for the different glycosides (and over the temperature range investigated), indicating that the bound water content is predominately influenced by the number of hydroxyl groups of the headgroup only. However, this bound water content of only 1.6-1.7 water molecules per sugar headgroup is surprisingly low, suggesting strong intermolecular interactions of the OH groups of headgroup sugars. The results are in line with computational results reported earlier for the octyl-β-glucoside and β-galactoside, which show the presence of strong intralayer hydrogen bonding.

14N NMR spectra of molecular nitrogen in SDS/pentanol swollen lamellar phases

14N NMR spectra of air dissolved in lyotropic mesophases are reported. In order to observe the whole spectrum from a molecule in which the quadrupole coupling constant is on the order of a few megahertz, a weak alignment degree with respect to the magnetic field is mandatory. Therefore, dilute lyotropic liquid crystals, namely sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS)/pentanol swollen lamellar phases, were considered. The temperature dependence of the 14N quadrupolar splitting was followed both in the case of oil (either n-dodecane or n-heptane) and brine (a 0.2-M NaBr water solution) swelling. In the former, it paralleled the temperature dependence of the splittings of the alkane deuteria and, in both cases, it was opposite to 23Na quadrupolar splittings. Owing to the higher N2 solubility in hydrocarbons, the 14N NMR spectra provide complementary information to that obtained by means of the quadrupolar nuclei of water and hydrophilic solutes.
