Analytical solutions to several magic-angle spinning NMR experiments

The Nature of Interface Interactions Leading to High Ionic Conductivity in LiBH4/SiO2 Nanocomposites

Complex metal hydride/oxide nanocomposites are a promising class of solid-state electrolytes. They exhibit high ionic conductivities due to an interaction of the metal hydride with the surface of the oxide. The exact nature of this interaction and composition of the hydride/oxide interface is not yet known. Using ¹H, ⁷Li, ¹¹B, and ²⁹Si NMR spectroscopy and lithium borohydride confined in nanoporous silica as a model system, we now elucidate the chemistry and dynamics occurring at the interface between the scaffold and the complex metal hydride. We observed that the structure of the oxide scaffold has a significant effect on the ionic conductivity. A previously unknown silicon site was observed in the nanocomposites and correlated to the LiBH₄ at the interface with silica. We provide a model for the origin of this silicon site which reveals that siloxane bonds are broken and highly dynamic silicon-hydride-borohydride and silicon-oxide-lithium bonds are formed at the interface between LiBH₄ and silica. Additionally, we discovered a strong correlation between the thickness of the silica pore walls and the fraction of the LiBH₄ that displays fast dynamics. Our findings provide insights on the role of the local scaffold structure and the chemistry of the interaction at the interface between complex metal hydrides and oxide hosts. These findings are relevant for other complex hydride/metal oxide systems where interface effects leads to a high ionic conductivity.

Fluent molecular mixing of Tau isoforms in Alzheimer's disease neurofibrillary tangles

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is defined by intracellular neurofibrillary tangles formed by the microtubule-associated protein tau and extracellular plaques formed by the β-amyloid peptide. AD tau tangles contain a mixture of tau isoforms with either four (4R) or three (3R) microtubule-binding repeats. Here we use solid-state NMR to determine how 4R and 3R tau isoforms mix at the molecular level in AD tau aggregates. By seeding differentially isotopically labeled 4R and 3R tau monomers with AD brain-derived tau, we measured intermolecular contacts of the two isoforms. The NMR data indicate that 4R and 3R tau are well mixed in the AD-tau seeded fibrils, with a 60:40 incorporation ratio of 4R to 3R tau and a small homotypic preference. The AD-tau templated 4R tau, 3R tau, and mixed 4R and 3R tau fibrils exhibit no structural differences in the rigid β-sheet core or the mobile domains. Therefore, 4R and 3R tau are fluently recruited into the pathological fold of AD tau aggregates, which may explain the predominance of AD among neurodegenerative disorders.

Kinetics of 1H-13C multiple-contact cross-polarization as a powerful tool to determine the structure and dynamics of complex materials: application to graphene oxide

Hartmann-Hahn cross-polarization (HHCP) is the most widely used solid-state NMR technique to enhance the magnetization of dilute spins from abundant spins. Furthermore, as the kinetics of CP depends on dipolar interactions, it contains valuable information on molecular structure and dynamics. In this work, analytical solutions are derived for the kinetics of HHCP and multiple-contact CP (MC-CP) using both classical and non-classical spin-coupling models including the effects of molecular dynamics and several ¹H, ¹³C relaxation and ¹H-¹³C CP experiments are performed in graphene oxide (GO). HHCP is found to be inefficient in our GO sample due to very fast ¹H T_1ρ relaxation. By contrast, the MC-CP technique which alleviates most of the magnetization loss by ¹H T_1ρ relaxation leads to a much larger polarization transfer efficiency reducing the measuring time by an order of magnitude. A detailed analysis of the HHCP and MC-CP kinetics indicates the existence of at least two different kinds of hydroxyl (C-OH) functional groups in GO, the major fraction (∼90%) of these groups being in the unusual "slow CP regime" in which the rate of ¹H T_1ρ relaxation is fast compared to the rate of cross-polarization. This ¹³C signal component is attributed to mobile C-OH groups interacting preferentially with fast-relaxing water molecules while the remaining carbons (∼10%) in the usual "fast CP regime" are assigned to C-OH groups involved in hydrogen bonding with neighboring hydroxyl and/or epoxy groups.

Dipolar filtered magic-sandwich-echoes as a tool for probing molecular motions using time domain NMR

We present a simple ¹H NMR approach for characterizing intermediate to fast regime molecular motions using ¹H time-domain NMR at low magnetic field. The method is based on a Goldmann Shen dipolar filter (DF) followed by a Mixed Magic Sandwich Echo (MSE). The dipolar filter suppresses the signals arising from molecular segments presenting sub kHz mobility, so only signals from mobile segments are detected. Thus, the temperature dependence of the signal intensities directly evidences the onset of molecular motions with rates higher than kHz. The DF-MSE signal intensity is described by an analytical function based on the Anderson Weiss theory, from where parameters related to the molecular motion (e.g. correlation times and activation energy) can be estimated when performing experiments as function of the temperature. Furthermore, we propose the use of the Tikhonov regularization for estimating the width of the distribution of correlation times.

Sensitivity enhancement by multiple-contact cross-polarization under magic-angle spinning

Multiple-contact cross-polarization (MC-CP) is applied to powder samples of ferrocene and l-alanine under magic-angle spinning (MAS) conditions. The method is described analytically through the density matrix formalism. The combination of a two-step memory function approach and the Anderson-Weiss approximation is found to be particularly useful to derive approximate analytical solutions for single-contact Hartmann-Hahn CP (HHCP) and MC-CP dynamics under MAS. We show that the MC-CP sequence requiring no pulse-shape optimization yields higher polarizations at short contact times than optimized adiabatic passage through the HH condition CP (APHH-CP) when the MAS frequency is comparable to the heteronuclear dipolar coupling, i.e., when APHH-CP through a single sideband matching condition is impossible or difficult to perform. It is also shown that the MC-CP sideband HH conditions are generally much broader than for single-contact HHCP and that efficient polarization transfer at the centerband HH condition can be reintroduced by rotor-asynchronous multiple equilibrations-re-equilibrations with the proton spin bath. Boundary conditions for the successful use of the MC-CP experiment when relying on spin-lattice relaxation for repolarization are also examined.

A double-component Anderson-Weiss approach for describing NMR signals of mobile SIn units: application to constant-time DIPSHIFT experiments

A composed Gaussian local field is proposed to describe the effect of molecular motions on NMR signals of SIn units (e.g., CHn or NHn), based upon the well-know Anderson-Weiss (AW) approximation. The approach is exemplified on constant-time recoupled dipolar chemical-shift correlation (tC-recDIPSHIFT) experiments, providing an analytical formula that can be used as a fitting function in studies of intermediate-regime motions. By comparison of analytical tC-recDIPSHIFT curves and dynamic spin dynamics simulations, we show that for heteronuclear spin pairs (SI system), the AW treatment assuming the usual Gaussian local field is accurate. However, the approximation fails for the case of SIn spin systems for motional rates higher than a few kHz. Based on earlier work of Terao et al., who proposed a decomposition of CHn dipolar powder patterns into to 2(n) spin-pair-type patterns, we propose an AW approach based upon a double-Gaussian local field. We derive an analytical formula for tC-recDIPSHIFT signals, and demonstrate its accuracy by comparison with simulations of several motional geometries and rates, and with experimental results for a model sample. The approach is not limited to the tC-recDIPSHIFT experiment and should be of general use in dipolar-coupling based experiments probing (partially) mobile SIn molecular moieties.

Hartmann-Hahn 2D-map to optimize the RAMP-CPMAS NMR experiment for pharmaceutical materials

Cross polarization-magic angle spinning (CPMAS) is the most used experiment for solid-state NMR measurements in the pharmaceutical industry, with the well-known variant RAMP-CPMAS its dominant implementation. The experimental work presented in this contribution focuses on the entangled effects of the main parameters of such an experiment. The shape of the RAMP-CP pulse has been considered as well as the contact time duration, and a particular attention also has been devoted to the radio-frequency (RF) field inhomogeneity. (13)C CPMAS NMR spectra have been recorded with a systematic variation of (13)C and (1)H constant radiofrequency field pair values and represented as a Hartmann-Hahn matching two-dimensional map. Such a map yields a rational overview of the intricate optimal conditions necessary to achieve an efficient CP magnetization transfer. The map also highlights the effects of sweeping the RF by the RAMP-CP pulse on the number of Hartmann-Hahn matches crossed and how RF field inhomogeneity helps in increasing the CP efficiency by using a larger fraction of the sample. In the light of the results, strategies for optimal RAMP-CPMAS measurements are suggested, which lead to a much higher efficiency than constant amplitude CP experiment.
