Application of 1H and 27Al magic angle spinning solid state NMR at 60kHz for studies of Au and Au-Ni catalysts supported on boehmite/alumina

New salts of teriflunomide (TFM) - Single crystal X-ray and solid state NMR investigation

New salts of teriflunomide TFM (drug approved for Multiple Sclerosis treatment) with inorganic counterions: lithium (TFM_Li), sodium (TFM_Na), potassium (TFM_K), rubidium (TFM_Rb), caesium (TFM_Cs) and ammonium (TFM_NH₄) were prepared and investigated employing solid state NMR Spectroscopy, Powder X-ray Diffraction PXRD and Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction (SC XRD). Crystal and molecular structures of three salts: TFM_Na (CCDC: 2173257), TFM_Cs (CCDC: 2165288) and TFM_NH₄ (CCDC: 2165281) were determined and deposited. Compared to the native TFM, for all crystalline salt structures, a conformational change of the teriflunomide molecule involving about 180-degree rotation of the end group, forming an intramolecular hydrogen bond N-H⋯O is observed. By applying a complementary multi-technique approach, employing 1D and 2D solid state MAS NMR techniques, single and powder X-ray diffraction measurements, as well as the DFT-based GIPAW calculations of NMR chemical shifts for TFM_Na and TFM_Cs allowed to propose structural features of TFM_Li for which it was not possible to obtain adequate material for single crystal X-Ray measurement.

Gold nanoparticle decorated dithiocarbamate modified natural boehmite as a catalyst for the synthesis of biologically essential propargylamines

Here, we prepare an Au NP decorated dithiocarbamate functionalized boehmite (γ-AlO(OH)@C-NHCS2H·AuNPs). This stepwise synthetic method gives an efficient, cost-effective, and green heterogenous Au-based nanocatalyst for the A3-coupling preparation of the biologically essential propargylamines. Different characterization methods, including FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX spectra, and elemental SEM-mapping, were employed to investigate the structure of the manufactured γ-AlO(OH)@C-NHCS2H·AuNPs. Then we used the prepared composite as a heterogeneous gold-based nanocatalyst for the one-pot A3-coupling preparation of propargyl amines by reacting a variety of aldehydes, amines, and phenylacetylene which exhibited promising results.

Structural characterization of interfaces in silica core-alumina shell microspheres by solid-state NMR spectroscopy

Atomic-scale description of surfaces and interfaces in core-shell aluminosilicate materials is not fully elucidated, partially due to their amorphous character and complex mechanisms that govern their properties. In this paper, new insights into nanostructured core-shell aluminosilicates have been demonstrated, by using different solid-state NMR methods, i.e ²⁹Si, ²⁹Si cross-polarization (CP), ²⁷Al, ²⁷Al triple-quantum (3Q), and ¹H-²⁷Al heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) MAS NMR. For this purpose, nanostructured silica core-alumina shell microspheres, undoped and doped with gadolinium ions respectively, obtained by a chemical synthesis based on the Stöber method for the silica core and electrostatic attraction for developing the alumina shell were studied. As a result, a new alumino-silicate layer formation was proved at the interface between silica core, where aluminum diffuses, on small scale, in the silica network, and alumina shell, where silicon ions migrate, on a larger scale, in the alumina network, leading to a stable core-shell structure. Moreover, this process is accompanied by significant local structural changes in the transition zone, particularly at the aluminum neighborhood, which is quite well understood now, with the power of solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

Solid-state NMR spectroscopy as a powerful tool to investigate the location of fluorinated lipids in highly porous hybrid organic-inorganic nanoparticles

Nanosized metal-organic frameworks (nanoMOFs) have emerged as a new class of biodegradable and nontoxic nanomaterials of high interest for biomedical applications thanks to the possibility to load large amounts of a wide variety of therapeutic molecules in their porous structure. The surface of the highly porous nanoMOFs is usually engineered to increase their colloidal stability, to tune their interactions with the biological environment, and to allow targeting specific cells or organs. However, the atomic-scale analysis of these complex core-shell materials is highly challenging. In this study, we report the investigation of aluminum-based nanoMOFs containing two fluorinated lipids by solid-state NMR spectroscopy, including ²⁷ Al, ¹ H and ¹⁹ F MAS NMR. The ensemble of NMR data provides a better understanding of the localization and conformation of the fluorinated lipids inside the pores or on the nanoMOF surface.

Pure Isotropic Proton Solid State NMR

Resolution in proton solid state magic angle sample spinning (MAS) NMR is limited by the intrinsically imperfect nature of coherent averaging induced by either MAS or multiple pulse sequence methods. Here, we suggest that instead of optimizing and perfecting a coherent averaging scheme, we could approach the problem by parametrically mapping the error terms due to imperfect averaging in a k-space representation, in such a way that they can be removed in a multidimensional correlation leaving only the desired pure isotropic signal. We illustrate the approach here by determining pure isotropic ¹H spectra from a series of MAS spectra acquired at different spinning rates. For six different organic solids, the approach is shown to produce pure isotropic ¹H spectra that are significantly narrower than the MAS spectrum acquired at the fastest possible rate, with linewidths down to as little as 48 Hz. On average, we observe a 7-fold increase in resolution, and up to a factor of 20, as compared with spectra acquired at 100 kHz MAS. The approach is directly applicable to a range of solids, and we anticipate that the same underlying principle for removing errors introduced here can be applied to other problems in NMR spectroscopy.

Catalyst Stability—Bottleneck of Efficient Catalytic Pyrolysis

The pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass is one of the most promising methods of alternative fuels production. However, due to the low selectivity of this process, the quality of the obtained bio-oil is usually not satisfactory and does not allow for its direct use as an engine fuel. Therefore, there is a need to apply catalysts able to upgrade the composition of the mixture of pyrolysis products. Unfortunately, despite the increase in the efficiency of the thermal decomposition of biomass, the catalysts undergo relatively fast deactivation and their stability can be considered a bottleneck of efficient pyrolysis of lignocellulosic feedstock. Therefore, solving the problem of catalyst stability is extremely important. Taking that into account, we presented, in this review, the most important reasons for catalyst deactivation, including coke formation, sintering, hydrothermal instability, and catalyst poisoning. Moreover, we discussed the progress in the development of methods leading to an increase in the stability of the catalysts of lignocellulosic biomass pyrolysis and strengthening their resistance to deactivation.

Frequency-Agile Low-Temperature Solution-Processed Alumina Dielectrics for Inorganic and Organic Electronics Enhanced by Fluoride Doping

The frequency-dependent capacitance of low-temperature solution-processed metal oxide (MO) dielectrics typically yields unreliable and unstable thin-film transistor (TFT) performance metrics, which hinders the development of next-generation roll-to-roll MO electronics and obscures intercomparisons between processing methodologies. Here, capacitance values stable over a wide frequency range are achieved in low-temperature combustion-synthesized aluminum oxide (AlO_x) dielectric films by fluoride doping. For an optimal F incorporation of ∼3.7 atomic % F, the F:AlO_x film capacitance of 166 ± 11 nF/cm² is stable over a 10^-1-10⁴ Hz frequency range, far more stable than that of neat AlO_x films (capacitance = 336 ± 201 nF/cm²) which falls from 781 ± 85 nF/cm² to 104 ± 4 nF/cm² over this frequency range. Importantly, both n-type/inorganic and p-type/organic TFTs exhibit reliable electrical characteristics with minimum hysteresis when employing the F:AlO_x dielectric with ∼3.7 atomic % F. Systematic characterization of film microstructural/compositional and electronic/dielectric properties by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, time-of-fight secondary ion mass spectrometry, cross-section transmission electron microscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy reveal that fluoride doping generates AlOF, which strongly reduces the mobile hydrogen content, suppressing polarization mechanisms at low frequencies. Thus, this work provides a broadly applicable anion doping strategy for the realization of high-performance solution-processed metal oxide dielectrics for both organic and inorganic electronics applications.
