Abstract
The ring opening of 2α,3α- and 2β,3β-epoxy-5α-androstan-17-one with halide reagents (AlCl3, TMSCl, LiCl, and LiBr) was investigated using imidazolium ionic liquids in the dual role of solvent and catalyst. The application of the ionic liquid was shown to result in an increase in the amount of the unusual diequatorial halohydrins especially at temperatures above 100 °C. With a careful choice of reaction conditions, the latter derivatives could be produced with 43-96% selectivity depending on the nature of the halide ion. Moreover, the usual diaxial products could also be isolated in 70-85% yields by a proper change in the reaction conditions. The reusability of the ionic liquid was demonstrated in both types of reactions. The structures of the products were proved unequivocally by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements including two-dimensional (2D) techniques as well as high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Based on quantum chemical calculations, the effect of the ionic liquid could be explained by the stabilization of the transition state leading to the diequatorial product.

Abstract
A concise synthesis of (16S,20S)-3β-hydroxy-5α-pregnane-20,16-carbolactam from tigogenin via the corresponding lactone is described. The most efficient synthetic route consisted of the lactone ring-opening with aminoalane reagent followed by PDC or Dess-Martin oxidation. The oxo-amide obtained was subjected to cyclization with Et3SiH/TFA or Et3SiH/Bi(TfO)3. Alternately, the lactone was converted first to the oxo-acid, which was then subjected to the microwave-assisted reductive amination. N-Alkyl derivatives were also obtained in a similar way.

Abstract
In the plant kingdom, steroidal lactones occur as glycosides, compounds consisting of a sugar moiety linked to a steroid aglycone. Steroidal lactones consist of five fused rings, with a total of 22 carbon atoms. Numerous methods for the preparation of steroidal lactones take advantage of the fact that steroid spirostanes may be degraded from six- to a five-rings structure. One of the most striking features common to reactions of steroid sapogenins is the C22-lactone formation. In the review, different methods for the preparation of steroidal lactones are presented with consideration of the structure of starting material. In addition, examples of lactones used in the synthesis of biologically active compounds and their analogues are described.

Abstract
The regioselective opening of the F ring of 22-oxo-23-spiroketals 7a-d using TiCl4 in acetic anhydride yielded the novel furostanols 11a-d along with cholestanic derivatives 8a-d with pyranone E ring. The structures of the new derivatives thus obtained were established using one- (DEPT) and two-dimensional 1H, 13C NMR experiments (COSY, HSQC, HMBC, NOESY). The 22α-hydroxyl orientation in compounds 11a-d was proposed by comparison of the 13C chemical shifts with those of other aglycone members of this family, and confirmed by combined NOESY and X-ray diffraction analysis of compound 11a.

Abstract
An efficient procedure for the synthesis of (20S)-3β-acetoxy-5α-pregnane-20,16β-carbolactone is described. Bactericidal and fungicidal activity of the lactone against different bacteria such as MSSA, MRSA, E. coli ESBL, P. aeruginosa and clinical isolates of Candida spp., in planktonic and biofilm growth stage were assessed. Additionally, the affinity of this new compound to microbial plasma membrane and hemoglobin release from human red blood cells were determined using fluorometric and colorimetric assay, respectively. Our studies revealed that the lactone exhibits strong antifungal activity, and the ability to prevent pathogens' biofilm formation. Additionally, upon lactone treatment a significant affinity to fungal, but not to human cell membranes, indicating suitable biocompatibility was observed.

The regioselective opening of the F ring of 22-oxo-23-spiroketals using BF3·OEt2 in acetic anhydride yielded novel cholestanic frameworks with pyranone E ring 20-23. The structures of the new derivatives of botogenin, diosgenin, hecogenin and tigogenin thus obtained were established using one and two dimensional (1)H, (13)C experiments (DEPT, COSY, HETCOR, HMBC). The X-ray diffraction analysis unequivocally confirmed the R configuration at C-23 in the starting 22-oxo-23-spiroketal 18 and the Z configuration of the C23-C24 double bond in the reaction product 20.

Abstract
During reactions of 23-oxosapogenins and the corresponding isomeric 22-oxo-23-spiroketals with MCPBA in the presence of BF(3)·Et(2)O, equilibration occurs between the ketones. The Baeyer-Villiger type oxidation is followed by fragmentation to the dinorcholanic lactones and 3-methylbutyrolactone. The mechanistic aspects of these reactions in the 25R and 25S series are discussed.
