Fractional factorial design for the optimization of hydrothermal synthesis of lanthanum oxide nanoparticles under supercritical water condition

Adsorption properties and mechanism research of phosphorus with different molecular structures from aqueous solutions by La-modified biochar

In order to explore the adsorption characteristics of phosphorus from molecules with different molecular structures and varying number of phosphate groups on metal-modified biochar, walnut shell biochar was modified with LaCl₃ to prepare lanthanum-loaded biochar (BC-La). Adsorption of four polar components, namely phytic acid (IHP), adenosine-5'-disodium triphosphate (5-ATP), hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP), and sodium pyrophosphate (PP), was studied. The adsorption properties and mechanism of phosphorus sorption by BC-La were analyzed by SEM-EDS and FTIR for the different structures. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of BC-La for IHP, 5-ATP, HEDP, and PP was 85.85, 9.04, 15.80, and 14.45 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption capacity was positively correlated with the polarity of organic phosphorus. The adsorption behavior conformed to the quasi second-order kinetic fitting equation, and the increase of temperature was conducive to the removal of all four phosphorus pollutants. BC-La adsorbs IHP and HEDP mainly through electrostatic attraction. The adsorption of 5-ATP and PP is dominated by complexation. The La-modified biochar has broad prospects in water remediation, which can provide a theoretical basis for removal of different forms of phosphorus pollutants and prevention and control of water eutrophication.

Toward efficient dye degradation and the bactericidal behavior of Mo-doped La2O3 nanostructures

In this study, different concentrations (0, 0.02, 0.04, and 0.06 wt%) of Mo doped onto La2O3 nanostructures were synthesized using a one-pot co-precipitation process. The aim was to study the ability of Mo-doped La2O3 samples to degrade toxic methylene blue dye in different pH media. The bactericidal potential of synthesized samples was also investigated. The structural properties of prepared samples were examined by XRD. The observed XRD spectrum of La2O3 showed a cubic and hexagonal structure, while no change was recorded in Mo-doped La2O3 samples. Doping with Mo improved the crystallinity of the samples. UV-Vis spectrophotometry and density functional theory calculations were used to assess the optical characteristics of Mo-La2O3. The band gap energy was reduced while the absorption spectra showed prominent peaks due to Mo doping. The HR-TEM results revealed the rod-like morphology of La2O3. The rod-like network appeared to become dense upon doping. A significant degradation of MB was confirmed with Mo; furthermore, the bactericidal activities against S. aureus and E. coli were measured as 5.05 mm and 5.45 mm inhibition zones, respectively, after doping with a high concentration (6%) of Mo.

Biological applications of green synthesized lanthanum oxide nanoparticles via Couroupita guianensis abul leaves extract

In this work, extract from leaves of Couroupita guianensis (C.guianensis) abul was used as a potential reducing agent for the synthesis of lanthanum oxide (La₂O₃) nanoparticles (NPs). In addition, the morphology and several physicochemical properties of the La₂O₃ NPs were improved by introducing the ionic liquid of 1-butyl 3-methyl imidazolium tetra fluoroborate (BMIM BF₄) as a stabilizing agent. The structure of the La₂O₃ (without ionic liquid) and IL-La₂O₃ (with ionic liquid) NPs were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The chemical composition of the synthesized NPs was analyzed using the energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies. Optical and morphological studies were also performed. The antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anticancer properties of the La₂O₃ and IL-La₂O₃ NPs were evaluated.

How do drivers negotiate intersections with pedestrians? The importance of pedestrian time-to-arrival and visibility

Forward collision warning (FCW) and autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems are increasingly available and prevent or mitigate collisions by alerting the driver or autonomously braking the vehicle. Threat-assessment and decision-making algorithms for FCW and AEB aim to find the best compromise for safety by intervening at the "right" time: neither too early, potentially upsetting the driver, nor too late, possibly missing opportunities to avoid the collision. Today, the extent to which activation times for FCW and AEB should depend on factors such as pedestrian speed and lane width is unknown. To guide the design of FCW and AEB intervention time, we employed a fractional factorial design, and determined how seven factors (crossing side, car speed, pedestrian speed, crossing angle, pedestrian size, zebra-crossing presence, and lane width) affect the driver's response process and comfort zone when negotiating an intersection with a pedestrian. Ninety-four volunteers drove through an intersection in a fixed-base driving simulator, which was based on open-source software (OpenDS). Several parameters, including pedestrian time-to-arrival and driver response time, were calculated to describe the driver response process and define driver comfort boundaries. Linear mixed-effect models showed that driver responses depended mainly on pedestrian time-to-arrival and visibility, whereas factors such as pedestrian size, zebra-crossing presence, and lane width did not significantly influence the driver response process. Drivers released the accelerator pedal in 99.8 % of the trials and braked in 89 % of the trials. Forty-six percent of the drivers changed their negotiation strategy (proportion of pedal braking to engine braking) to minimize driving effort over the course of the experiment. In fact, 51 % of the of the inexperienced drivers changed their response strategy whereas only 40 % of the experienced drivers did; nevertheless, all drivers behaved similarly, independent of driving experience. The flexible and customizable driving environment provided by OpenDS may be a viable platform for behavioural experiments in driving simulators. Results from this study suggest that visibility and pedestrian time-to-arrival are the most important variables for defining the earliest acceptable FCW and AEB activations. Fractional factorial design effectively compared the influence of seven factors on driver behaviour within a single experiment; however, this design did not allow in-depth data analysis. In the future, OpenDS might become a standard platform, enabling crowdsourcing and favouring repeatability across studies in traffic safety. Finally, this study advises future design and evaluation procedures (e.g. new car assessment programs) for FCW and AEB by highlighting which factors deserve further investigation and which ones do not.

Enhanced removal of phosphate and nitrate ions from aqueous media using nanosized lanthanum hydrous doped on magnetic graphene nanocomposite

A novel nanocomposite adsorbent based on nanosized lanthanum hydroxide doped onto magnetic reduced graphene oxide (MG@La) was synthesized and used for removal of phosphate and nitrate ions from river and sewage media. The composition, surface properties and morphology of the as prepared adsorbent were studied using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The influence of main parameters on the efficiency of removal process including adsorbent dosage, salt addition, solution pH, contact time, and concentration of the analytes were thoroughly investigated. The validity of the experimental process was checked by the adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics models. The obtained data were well fitted to Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The developed adsorbent showed high adsorption capacities of 116.28 mg g^-1 and 138.88 mg g^-1 for phosphate and nitrate ions, respectively. Additionally, Langmuir isotherm and free energy were suggested monolayer pattern and physisorption mechanism for adsorption process, respectively. Finally, the field application of newly synthesized MG@La provided high removal efficiencies (74%-90%) for phosphate and nitrate ions in real river and sewage water samples.
