Surface modification of silica particles assisted by CO2

Facile In Situ Synthesis of ZnO Flower-like Hierarchical Nanostructures by the Microwave Irradiation Method for Multifunctional Textile Coatings

ZnO nanoparticle-based multifunctional coatings were prepared by a simple, time-saving microwave method. Arginine and ammonia were used as precipitation agents, and zinc acetate dehydrate was used as a zinc precursor. Under the optimized conditions, flower-like morphologies of ZnO aggregates were obtained. The prepared nanopowders were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and UV/Visible spectroscopy. The developed in situ synthesis with microwave irradiation enabled significant ZnO nanoparticle deposition on cotton fabrics, without additional steps. The functionalized textiles were tested as a photocatalyst in methylene blue (MB) photodegradation and showed good self-cleaning and UV-blocking properties. The coated cotton fabrics exhibited good antibacterial properties against common microbial trains (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans), together with self-cleaning and photocatalytic efficiency in organic dye degradation. The proposed microwave-assisted in situ synthesis of ZnO nanocoatings on textiles shows high potential as a rapid, efficient, environmentally friendly, and scalable method to fabricate functional fabrics.

Effects of Annealing Temperature on the Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity of Copper-Cobalt Oxide Nanosheets

Developing high performance, highly stable, and low-cost electrodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is challenging in water electrolysis technology. However, Ir- and Ru-based OER catalysts with high OER efficiency are difficult to commercialize as precious metal-based catalysts. Therefore, the study of OER catalysts, which are replaced by non-precious metals and have high activity and stability, are necessary. In this study, a copper–cobalt oxide nanosheet (CCO) electrode was synthesized by the electrodeposition of copper–cobalt hydroxide (CCOH) on Ni foam followed by annealing. The CCOH was annealed at various temperatures, and the structure changed to that of CCO at temperatures above 250 °C. In addition, it was observed that the nanosheets agglomerated when annealed at 300 °C. The CCO electrode annealed at 250 °C had a high surface area and efficient electron conduction pathways as a result of the direct growth on the Ni foam. Thus, the prepared CCO electrode exhibited enhanced OER activity (1.6 V at 261 mA/cm²) compared to those of CCOH (1.6 V at 144 mA/cm²), Co₃O₄ (1.6 V at 39 mA/cm²), and commercial IrO₂ (1.6 V at 14 mA/cm²) electrodes. The optimized catalyst also showed high activity and stability under high pH conditions, demonstrating its potential as a low cost, highly efficient OER electrode material.

Surface Properties of Alkoxysilane Layers Grafted in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

Silicon oxide surface properties can be easily modified by grafting alkoxysilane molecules. Here, we studied the structure and the morphology of ultrathin layers prepared by the grafting of alkoxysilanes having different head groups (thiol, amine, and iodo) in supercritical carbon dioxide (CO₂) on model plane silicon oxide surfaces. Several characterization techniques (X-ray reflectivity, water contact angle, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM)) were used to determine the physicochemical properties of the layers prepared at different temperatures. Moreover, for the first time, AFM peak force measurements were used to delve deeper into the determination of the structure of these ultrathin alkoxysilane layers. The results show that the grafting temperature and the nature of the head group strongly affect the morphology and structure of the grafted layers. Dense monolayers are obtained with 3-(mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane at 60 °C, polycondensed layers are always prepared with [3-(aminoethylamino)propyl]trimethoxysilane, and a dense bilayer is synthesized with 3-(iodopropyl)triethoxysilane at 120 °C.

The Influence of New Hydrophobic Silica Nanoparticles on the Surface Properties of the Films Obtained from Bilayer Hybrids

Ultra-hydrophobic bilayer coatings on a glass surface were fabricated by sol-gel process using hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (C16TMS) and tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) (1:4 molar ratio) as precursors. After coating, silica nanoparticles (SiO₂ NPs) functionalized with different mono-alkoxy derivatives (methoxytrimethylsilane, TMeMS; ethoxydimethylvinylsilane, DMeVES; ethoxydimethylphenylsilane, DMePhES; and methoxydimethyloctylsilane, DMeC₈MS) were added, assuring the microscale roughness on the glass surface. Influences of the functionalized SiO₂ NPs and surface morphology on the hydrophobicity of the hybrid films were discussed. The successful functionalization of SiO₂ NPs with hydrophobic alkyl groups were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The thermal stability of hydrophobic SiO₂ NPs showed that the degradation of the alkyl groups takes place in the 200-400 °C range. Bilayer coating with C16TMS/TMOS and SiO₂ NPs modified with alkoxysilane substituted with C₈ alkyl chain (SiO₂ NP-C₈) has micro/nano structure. Hydrophobicity of functionalized SiO₂ NPs-C₈ and its higher degree of nanometer-scale roughness gave rise to ultra-hydrophobicity performance for bilayer coating C16TMS/TMOS + SiO₂ NPs-C₈ (145°), compared to other similar hybrid structures. Our synthesis method for the functionalization of SiO₂ NPs is useful for the modification of surface polarity and roughness.
