Abstract
The purpose of this study was to understand the occupational performance of parents with cancer and to understand if photo-elicitation would provide new insights into these experiences. In a semi-structured photo-elicitation interview, 36 participants living with and beyond cancer who had children under 18 years old shared and discussed photographs related to their parenting experiences. Transcribed interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. Two main themes were identified. Parents shared how they (a) managed daily responsibilities and (b) maintained connection with their family. Across all types, stages and phases of the cancer continuum parents shared experiences related to maintaining child and family responsibilities and maintaining connection with their children. Photo-elicitation was an efficient and effective method to gather rich data from parents living with cancer. The results emphasize the clinical utility of using photo-elicitation to understand the occupational performance of parents throughout the cancer continuum of care.

Abstract
PURPOSE Oral anti-cancer agents (OAAs) represent a new frontier in cancer treatment, but we do not know how well patients incorporate the strategies that they are taught for managing the side effects of OAAs into their daily lives. The purpose of this study was to understand how OAA side effects influenced patients' lives and what strategies patients used to manage them. METHODS The study used an interpretive descriptive design utilizing photo elicitation interviews (PEI). Two pharmacists employed at the study ambulatory oncology clinic assisted with recruitment. Participants took photos and subsequent interviews focused on talking to participants about each photo, eliciting participant perspectives describing side effects of OAAs and management strategies. A directed content analysis approach was used to analyze the transcribed interviews. RESULTS A total of nine participants were included in the study. Three themes and associated sub-themes emerged: making changes to nutritional habits due to OAA side effects (hydration and food), strategies to alleviate OAA side effects (medication and non-medication related), and methods of coping with OAA effects (intra- and interpersonal). Changing nutritional habits was an important strategy to manage OAA side effects. Medication-related strategies to alleviate OAA side effects could be nuanced and, additionally, there was wide variability in coping methods used. CONCLUSION Patient education on OAAs and side effects is not always tailored to each unique patient and their circumstances. This study uncovered how participants devised their own distinct strategies to prevent or manage OAA side effects in an effort to help improve patients' experiences when taking OAAs.

Salazar SMDC, Dino MJS, Macindo JRB. Social connectedness and health-related quality of life among patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy: A mixed method approach using structural equation modelling and photo-elicitation. J Clin Nurs 2023; 32:6298-6309. [PMID: 36894524 DOI: 10.1111/jocn.16675] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/24/2022] [Revised: 12/26/2022] [Accepted: 02/20/2023] [Indexed: 03/11/2023]
Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop and test the model of association of social connectedness and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy and to describe their social connectedness through photo-elicitation. BACKGROUND Social connectedness has been empirically associated with several well-being outcomes. However, little is known on the association of social connectedness among patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS Employing a mixed-methods design following the good reporting of a mixed methods study guideline, the quantitative approach involved 230 consecutively-selected patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy who answered a three-part survey. From these patients, six informants participated in the photo-elicitation and key informant interview sessions. Gathered data were quantitatively analyzed using structural equation modelling and qualitatively processed using polytextual thematic analysis. RESULTS AND FINDINGS Social connectedness had a positive influence on social well-being (β = .22, p = .008) and emotional well-being (β = .20, p = .023); however, it had a negative effect on functional well-being (β = -.20, p = .007). The overall model revealed good model indices: χ2 /df = .82, RMSEA = .01, GFI = 1.00. Qualitative analysis culled from photo-elicitation uncovered five interconnected themes yielding the Honeycomb model of social connectedness which was composed of correspondence, cohesion, constitution, convergence and corroboration. CONCLUSION HRQoL among patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy is a multi-factorial health construct affected by social connectedness. The presented model emphasises the importance of social connectedness and paves way for the development of appropriate strategies to promote social connectedness among patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The findings provide impetus in the modification and development of appropriate practices, policies and strategies in promoting social connectedness. These approaches are geared towards patient-family empowerment and health education techniques to ascertain that assistance from significant others is provided without limiting the patient's autonomy or independence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bowel dysfunction is an important consequence of rectal cancer surgery' and the specific quality-of-life domains that are affected remain unclear and unaddressed by generic surveys. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to identify quality-of-life domains most affected by rectal cancer surgery. DESIGN Qualitative content analysis. SETTINGS Semistructured interviews conducted by telephone with patients recruited from a single university-affiliated colorectal referral center. PATIENTS Adult patients were included if they underwent rectal cancer surgery with sphincter preservation from July 2017 to July 2020. Patients were excluded if their surgery was <1 year since the recruitment date, received a permanent stoma, or developed recurrence or metastasis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Bowel dysfunction was evaluated via the low anterior resection syndrome score. Interview transcripts were coded by 2 independent reviewers and evaluated for concordance. Qualitative content analysis was used to identify themes, and their frequency of occurrence was quantified (percent total number of interviews). RESULTS A total of 54 patient interviews were conducted. Analysis revealed 5 quality-of-life-related themes impacted by bowel dysfunction: experiencing psychological and emotional stress, challenging roles and relationships within society, encountering physical limitations, restricting leisure and recreational activities, and learning self-empowerment and adapting to change. Patients with minor and major bowel dysfunction were more likely to report disruption to their social activities and their role as a sexual partner versus those with no bowel dysfunction. Patients with major bowel dysfunction were more likely to report effects on sleep versus those with no and minor bowel dysfunction. LIMITATIONS Single center, self-reported, and observer bias. CONCLUSION The impact of bowel dysfunction on quality of life includes a wide range of themes that extend beyond traditional measures. These results may help better inform patients in the preoperative setting and serve as a basis for the development of a more patient-centered quality-of-life survey. Abstract
Traditionally employed in medical anthropologic and sociologic literature, qualitative methods are emerging as an essential component of clinical research as surgeons and researchers strive to optimize care informed by patient perspectives. Qualitative methods in health care-related research may be used to understand subjective experiences, beliefs, and concepts that are not captured using quantitative analyses and to gain in-depth knowledge of a specific context or culture. A qualitative approach may also be employed to explore under-researched problems and generate new ideas. Here, we provide an overview of aspects to consider when designing and conducting a qualitative research study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer survivors have to develop coping strategies during the diagnosis and survivorship period. This study aims to identify coping strategies in patients with colorectal cancer, in particular the differences between coping strategies during the disease and throughout survival. It also aims to investigate the impact of some social determinants on coping strategies and critically reflect on the influence of positive psychology. METHODS Qualitative study with in-depth interviews of a purposive sample of 21 colorectal cancer survivors in Majorca (Spain), developed between 2017-2019. Data was analysed using interpretive thematic analysis. RESULTS We observed different coping strategies during the stages of disease and survival. However, striving toward acceptance and adaptation when facing difficulties and uncertainty, predominate in both stages. Confrontational attitudes are also considered important, as well as encouraging positive rather than negative feelings, which are considered unhelpful and to be avoided. CONCLUSIONS Although coping during illness and survival can be classified into common categories (problem and emotion-centred strategies), the challenges of these stages are faced differently. Age, gender and the cultural influence of positive psychology strongly influence both stages and strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rectal cancer survivors experience persistent symptoms, which may lead to unmet needs. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the rectal cancer survivor experience and identify the impacts of treatment using photo-elicitation. DESIGN This was a novel study in which patients were instructed to take photographs that showed aspects of life that have been challenging to deal with since undergoing treatment. Participants underwent subsequent qualitative interviews using the photographs as prompts. SETTING The study was conducted in a cancer center in a tertiary medical center. PATIENTS Twenty patients were included who underwent curative-intent rectal cancer treatment. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Interviews were designed to explore the lived experiences of patients with rectal cancer after treatment. RESULTS Three major themes with regard to life after rectal cancer and its treatments emerged: physical symptoms, lifestyle changes, and changes over time. Physical symptoms encompassed GI issues, ostomy difficulties, and genitourinary symptoms. Lifestyle changes included those relating to diet, social life, and hobbies as well as major life changes and finances. Finally, patients spoke of improvement during the time of symptoms and impact on daily life. LIMITATIONS There may be bias because of the homogeneity of our study population, which may not represent the experiences of younger patients, those of lower socioeconomic status, or those who chose not to participate. Our sample was also overrepresented by patients with a complete pathologic response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and excluded individuals with recurrence. Finally, single interviews with each individual at different points from their treatment may have resulted in recall bias. CONCLUSIONS This photo-elicitation study provided rectal cancer survivors with a unique opportunity to share how rectal cancer treatment has impacted their lives beyond traditional metrics such as postoperative complications and long-term survival. In addition to improving preoperative counseling and expectation setting, future efforts should focus on postoperative symptom surveillance and appropriate referral when needed. See Video Abstract at http://links.lww.com/DCR/C7.
