Abstract
Bacterial disease is one of the most critical problems in aquaculture. Probiotics represent a promising biological approach to control bacterial disease because it is effective against pathogens and environmentally friendly. This study assessed the antagonistic activities of a bacterial strain FIO1408 isolated from deep-sea water against many pathogenic bacteria in aquaculture, including Listonella anguillarum, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio alginolyticus, Aeromonas hydrophila, Edwardsiella anguillarum, Edwardsiella tarda, and Edwardsiella piscicida. The complete genome of strain FIO1408 consisted of a circular chromosome of 4,137,639 bp and two plasmids of 16,439 bp and 24,472 bp. Phylogenetic analysis showed strain FIO1408 clustered with Bacillus velezensis strains. 12 genes/gene clusters responsible for the synthesis of secondary metabolites were identified in the FIO1408 genome, including three lipopeptides, three polyketides, three bacteriocins, one siderophore, one dipeptide, and one unknown type. Also identified were 273 unique orthologous genes primarily involved in phage resistance, protein hydrolysis, environmental survivability, and genetic stability compared to B. velezensis KACC 13105, B. velezensis FZB42T, and B. velezensis NRRL B-41580. The principal safety of FIO1408 was demonstrated by genetic analyses and feeding trials. These findings will contribute to studies on the biocontrol mechanisms of B. velezensis FIO1408 and facilitate its application as a potent biological control agent against bacterial pathogens in aquaculture.

Abstract
This study reports the draft genome sequence of Bacillus velezensis strain AAK_S6 as a valuable biocontrol agent with high genetic potential to harbor broad-spectrum secondary metabolite producing capacity. A genome data of 4,430,946 bp were generated with a GC content of 46.4% that comprised a total of 4861 genes including a total of 4757 coding sequences (CDS), 104 rRNAs, 85 tRNAs and 80 pseudo-genes. Based on the overall genome-based relatedness indices (OGRI), the strain AAK_S6 has been reassigned to its correct taxonomic position. The strain shared > 99% OrthoANI, > 98% ANIb, > 99% ANIm, > 0.9900 TETRA, > 93% dDDH and 0.08% GC content difference with model strains B. velezensis FZB42T and B. velezensis NRRL B-41580T thus delineating them as closely related species. The genome was mined for strain-specific secondary metabolites that revealed 20 gene clusters for the biosynthesis of several cyclic lipopeptides, saccharides, polyketides along with bacilysin. Thus, the comparative genome analysis of strain AAK_S6 with members of the genus Bacillus by phylogenomic approach revealed that the genomes were almost similar genetically and contained the core genome for B. velezensis. Genomic data strongly supported that the strain AAK_S6 represented an excellent potential candidate for the production of secondary metabolites that could serve as a basis for developing new biocontrol agents, plant growth promoters, and microbial fertilizers.

Abstract
Bacteria produce under certain stress conditions bacteriocins and microcins that display antibacterial activity against closely related species for survival. Bacteriocins and microcins exert their antibacterial activity by either disrupting the membrane or inhibiting essential intracellular processes of the bacterial target. To this end, they can lyse bacterial membranes and cause subsequent loss of their integrity or nutrients, or hijack membrane receptors for internalisation. Both bacteriocins and microcins are ribosomally synthesised and several are posttranslationally modified, whereas others are not. Such peptides are also toxic to the producer bacteria, which utilise immunity proteins or/and dedicated ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters to achieve self-immunity and peptide export. In this review, we discuss the structure and mechanism of self-protection that is conferred by these ABC transporters.

Abstract
The microbiota contributes to artisanal cheese bioprotection and biopreservation through inter and intraspecific competition. This work aimed to investigate the phylogenetic distribution of the repertoire of bacteriocin structural genes of model lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in order to investigate its respective role in the artisanal cheeses microenvironment. A phylogenetic analysis of the rRNA 16S gene from 445 model strains of LAB was conducted using bayesian inference and the repertoire of bacteriocin genes was predicted from these strains by BAGEL software. Bacterial strains were clustered in five monophyletic clades (A, B, C, D and E) with high posterior probability values (PP > 0.99). One bacteriocin structural gene was predicted for 88.5% of the analyzed strains. The majority of the species encoded different classes of bacteriocins. Greater diversity of bacteriocin genes was found for strains included in clade A, comprising Lactococcus lactis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus thermophilus, Streptococcus macedonicus, Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium. In addition, Lactococcus lactis presented higher diversity of bacteriocin classes, encoding glycocins, lanthipeptides, sactipeptides, cyclic and linear azole-containing peptides, included in bacteriocins class I, besides class II and III. The results suggest that the distribution of bacteriocin structural genes is related to the phylogenetic clades of LAB species, with a higher frequency in some specific clades. Information comprised in this study contributes to comprehend the bacterial competition mechanisms in the artisanal cheese microenvironment.

Abstract
Biocontrol is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly technique used in agricultural production. We isolated and screened a bacterial strain from the soils of a peach orchard with high yield. Using biochemical and physiological analysis as well as phylogenetic sequencing data, we identified a strain of Bacillus methylotrophicus, strain XJ-C. The results of our screening trials showed that XJ-C was able to suppress M. fructicola at an inhibition rate of 81.57%. Following the application of a 1×109 CFU/mL XJ-C strain suspension to the fruits, leaves, and shoots of peach trees infected with M. fructicola, the inhibition rate reached 64.31%, 97.34%, and 64.28%, respectively. Using OM and SEM, we observed that, under the inhibition of strain XJ-C, M. fructicola mycelium and spores were abnormally shaped. Under TEM, cell walls were transparent, organelles had disappeared, and the intracellular vacuole was deformed. Thus, XJ-C has the potential to be used in biocontrol.

Abstract
Members of the bacterial genus Bacillus are known as producers of a broad spectrum of antibiotic compounds of proteinaceous nature that possess inhibitory activity against different saprophytic and pathogenic microorganisms. In the current research, a peptide synthesized by Bacillus methylotrophicus strain BM47, previously isolated from a natural thermal spring in Bulgaria, was identified and characterized as a bacteriocin. In vitro antimicrobial screening of the crude bacteriocin substance of B. methylotrophicus BM47 showed activity against the plant pathogenic fungi Fusarium moniliforme, Aspergillus awamori, Penicillium sp., Aspergillus niger and Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antimicrobial activity of the crude bacteriocin substance was partially inhibited by the enzymes trypsin, Alcalase®, Savinase®, proteinase K, papain and Esperase®, while catalase was not effective. The crude bacteriocin substance was relatively pH resistant, but sensitive to the action of heat and most organic solvents and detergents tested. To obtain the active protein fractions, crude bacteriocin substance was purified by fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) using a strong anion exchange column. Tricine-sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis demonstrated that the purified bacteriocin had molecular mass of 19 578 Da. The amino acid analysis performed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) revealed that the isolated bacteriocin consisted of 17 types of amino acids, with the highest mol fraction expressed as percent of serine (29.3), valine (10.3), alanine (9.8) and tyrosine (7.1).

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterial pathogen responsible for the majority of skin and soft tissue infections. Antibiotics are losing their efficacy as treatment for skin and soft tissue infections as a result of increased resistance in a variety of pathogens, including S. aureus It is thus imperative to explore alternative antimicrobial treatments to ensure future treatment options for skin and soft tissue infections. A select few lantibiotics, a group of natural defense peptides produced by bacteria, inhibit the growth of numerous clinical S. aureus isolates, including methicillin-resistant strains. In this study, the antimicrobial activities of nisin, clausin, and amyloliquecidin, separately administered, were compared to that of a mupirocin-based ointment, which is commonly used as treatment for S. aureus-induced skin infections. Full-thickness excisional wounds, generated on the dorsal surfaces of mice, were infected with a bioluminescent strain of S. aureus (strain Xen 36). The infections were monitored in real time using in vivo bioluminescent imaging. Lantibiotic treatments significantly reduced the bioluminescence of S. aureus Xen 36 to a level similar to that recorded with mupirocin treatment. Wound closure, however, was more pronounced during lantibiotic treatment. Lantibiotics thus have the potential to be used as an alternative treatment option for S. aureus-induced skin infections.
