Preparation and adsorption of bovine serum albumin-imprinted polyacrylamide hydrogel membrane grafted on non-woven polypropylene

Roll to roll in situ preparation of recyclable, washable, antibacterial Ag loaded nonwoven fabric

Functional fabrics with antibacterial performance are more welcome nowadays. However, the fabrication of functional fabrics with durable, steady performance via a cost-effective way remains a challenge. Polypropylene (denoted as PP) nonwoven fabric was modified by polyvinyl alcohol (denoted as PVA), followed by the in-situ deposition of silver nanoparticles (denoted as Ag NPs) to afford PVA-modified and Ag NPs-loaded PP (denoted as Ag/PVA/PP) fabric. The encapsulation of PP fiber by PVA coating contributes to greatly enhancing the adhesion of the loaded Ag NPs to the PP fiber, and the Ag/PVA/PP nonwoven fabrics exhibit significantly improved mechanical properties as well as excellent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (coded as E. coli). Typically, the Ag/PVA/PP nonwoven fabric obtained at a silver ammonia concentration of 30 mM has the best mechanical properties and the antibacterial rate reaches 99.99% against E. coli. The fabric retains excellent antibacterial activity even after washing for 40 cycles, showing prospects in reuse. Moreover, the Ag/PVA/PP nonwoven fabric could find promising application in industry, thanks to its desired air-permeability and moisture-permeability. In addition, we developed a roll-to-roll production process and conducted preliminary exploration to verify the feasibility of this method.

Adsorption and Electrochemical Detection of Bovine Serum Albumin Imprinted Calcium Alginate Hydrogel Membrane

In this paper, bovine serum albumin (BSA)-imprinted calcium alginate (CaAlg) hydrogel membrane was prepared using BSA as a template, sodium alginate (NaAlg) as a functional monomer, and CaCl₂ as a cross-linker. The thickness of the CaAlg membrane was controlled by a glass rod enlaced with brass wires (the diameter was 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 mm). The swelling properties of the CaAlg membranes prepared with different contents of NaAlg were researched. Circular dichroism indicated that the conformation of BSA did not change during the preparing and eluting process. The thinner the CaAlg hydrogel membrane was, the larger the adsorption capacity and the higher the imprinting efficiency of the CaAlg. The maximum adsorption capacity of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) and non-imprinted CaAlg hydrogel membrane (NIP) was 38.6 mg·g⁻¹ and 9.2 mg·g⁻¹, respectively, with an imprinting efficiency of 4.2. The MIP was loaded on the electrode to monitor the selective adsorption of BSA by voltammetry curve.

Removal of Dyes and Cd2+ in Water by Kaolin/Calcium Alginate Filtration Membrane

Kaolin/calcium alginate (kaolin/CaAlg) free-standing membranes were prepared by adding different amounts of Kaolin into the sodium alginate (NaAlg) casting solution and crosslinked by Ca2+ using urea as porogen agent. The morphology of the kaolin/CaAlg filtration membrane was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Then the kaolin/CaAlg membrane was used for the removal of dyes and Cd2+. The kaolin significantly improved the mechanical behavior and flux of the kaolin/CaAlg membrane. The flux reached 17.53 L/m2·h at 0.1 MPa and when the content of Kaolin in NaAlg was 70 wt.%. The filtration of BSA solution and oil-water emulsion indicated that the kaolin/CaAlg composite filtration membrane exhibited good anti-fouling properties. The rejection of Brilliant Blue G250, Congo red, and methylene blue by the kaolin/CaAlg filtration membrane was 100%, 95.22%, and 62.86%, respectively. The removal rate of Cd2+ reached 99.69%, with a flux of 17.06 L/m2·h at 0.1 MPa.

Synthesis and characterization of albumin imprinted polymeric hydrogel membranes for proteomic studies

In this presented study, a novel molecularly imprinted polymeric hydrogel membranes (PHMs) were developed to use for the albumin depletion studies. For this, albumin imprinted poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-N-methacryloyl-(L)-phenylalanine methyl ester) polymeric hydrogel membranes [p(HEMA-MAP) PHMs] were synthesized by the photopolymerization technique, and then characterized by SEM, EDX, FT-IR and swelling studies. Synthesized PHMs had spherical structure and the MAP monomer incorporation onto the PHMs was determined by EDX analysis by using nitrogen stoichiometry. Also, the swelling ratio of the albumin imprinted p(HEMA-MAP) PHMs was determined as 215%. The optimum albumin adsorption condition (adsorption capacity, medium pH, adsorption rate, temperature, ionic strength) were studied and the maximum albumin adsorption capacity was found to be as 34.28 mg/g PHMs. Selectivity experiments were also carried out with the presence of the competitive proteins such as lysozyme and amylase, and the results demonstrated that the albumin imprinted p(HEMA-MAP) PHMs showed high affinity towards the BSA molecules than the competitive proteins of lysozyme and amylase. Adsorbed albumin was desorbed from the PHMs by 1.0 M of NaCl, and the reusability of the imprinted PHMs was also demonstrated for five successive adsorption-desorption cycles without any significant loss in the albumin adsorption capacity. As an application, sodium-dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to indicate the albumin depletion efficiency of albumin imprinted p(HEMA-MAP) PHMs. This presented study showed that, these imprinted membranes are promising for proteomic studies and applications, and can be used for the investigations for human diagnostics.

Preparation of Protein Molecular-Imprinted Polysiloxane Membrane Using Calcium Alginate Film as Matrix and Its Application for Cell Culture

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) molecular-imprinted polysiloxane (MIP) membrane was prepared by sol-gel technology, using silanes as the functional monomers, BSA as the template and CaAlg hydrogel film as the matrix. The stress-strain curves of wet CaAlg membrane and molecular-imprinted polysiloxane membrane were investigated. We evaluate the adsorption and recognition properties of MIP membrane. Results showed that the adsorption capacity of BSA-imprinted polysiloxane for BSA reached 28.83 mg/g, which was 2.18 times the non-imprinted polysiloxane (NIP) membrane. The adsorption rate was higher than that of the protein-imprinted hydrogel. BSA-imprinted polysiloxane membrane could identify the protein template from competitive proteins such as bovine hemoglobin, ovalbumin and bovine γ-globulin. In order to obtain the biomaterial that can promote cell adhesion and proliferation, fibronectin (FN)-imprinted polysiloxane (FN-MIP) membrane was obtained by using fibronectin as the template, silanes as functional monomers, and CaAlg hydrogel membrane as the substrate or matrix. The FN-MIP adsorbed more FN than NIP. The FN-imprinted polysiloxane membrane was applied to culture mouse fibroblast cells (L929) and the results proved that the FN-MIP had a better effect on cell adhesion than NIP.

Molecularly imprinted polymer membranes and thin films for the separation and sensing of biomacromolecules

This review describes recent advances associated with the development of surface imprinting methods for the synthesis of polymeric membranes and thin films, which possess the capability to selectively and specifically recognize biomacromolecules, such as proteins and single- and double-stranded DNA, employing "epitope" or "whole molecule" approaches. Synthetic procedures to create different molecularly imprinted polymer membranes or thin films are discussed, including grafting/in situ polymerization, drop-, dip-, or spin-coating procedures, electropolymerization as well as micro-contact or stamp lithography imprinting methods. Highly sensitive techniques for surface characterization and analyte detection are described, encompassing luminescence and fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, quartz crystal microbalance analysis, cyclic voltammetry, and surface plasmon resonance. These developments are providing new avenues to produce bioelectronic sensors and new ways to explore through advanced separation science procedures complex phenomena associated with the origins of biorecognition in nature.

Molecularly Imprinted Membranes: Past, Present, and Future

More than 80 years ago, artificial materials with molecular recognition sites emerged. The application of molecular imprinting to membrane separation has been studied since 1962. Especially after 1990, such research has been intensively conducted by membranologists and molecular imprinters to understand the advantages of each technique with the aim of constructing an ideal membrane, which is still an active area of research. The present review aims to be a substantial, comprehensive, authoritative, critical, and general-interest review, placed at the cross section of two broad, interconnected, practical, and extremely dynamic fields, namely, the fields of membrane separation and molecularly imprinted polymers. This review describes the recent discoveries that appeared after repeated and fertile collisions between these two fields in the past three years, to which are added the worthy acknowledgments of pioneering discoveries and a look into the future of molecularly imprinted membranes. The review begins with a general introduction in membrane separation, followed by a short theoretical section regarding the basic principles of mass transport through a membrane. Following these general aspects on membrane separation, two principles of obtaining polymeric materials with molecular recognition properties are reviewed, namely, molecular imprinting and alternative molecular imprinting, followed the methods of obtaining and practical applications for the particular case of molecularly imprinted membranes. The review continues with insights into molecularly imprinted nanofiber membranes as a promising, highly optimized type of membrane that could provide a relatively high throughput without a simultaneous unwanted reduction in permselectivity. Finally, potential applications of molecularly imprinted membranes in a variety of fields are highlighted, and a look into the future of membrane separations is offered.

Highly conductive and flexible silver nanowire-based microelectrodes on biocompatible hydrogel

We successfully fabricated silver nanowire (AgNW)-based microelectrodes on various substrates such as a glass and polydimethylsiloxane by using a photolithographic process for the first time. The AgNW-based microelectrodes exhibited excellent electrical conductivity and mechanical flexibility. We also demonstrated the direct transfer process of AgNW-based microelectrodes from a glass to a biocompatible polyacrylamide-based hydrogel. The AgNW-based microelectrodes on the biocompatible hydrogel showed excellent electrical performance. Furthermore, they showed great mechanical flexibility as well as superior stability under wet conditions. We anticipate that the AgNW-based microelectrodes on biocompatible hydrogel substrates can be a promising platform for realization of practical bioelectronics devices.
