Abstract
Boronate affinity adsorbents are of great promise in the enrichment of small cis-diol-containing molecules (cis-diols) from biological matrices. This work develops a restricted-access boronate affinity mesoporous adsorbent, in which boronate sites are only distributed on the internal surface of mesopores and the external surface is a strongly hydrophilic layer. The adsorbent has high binding capacities (30.3 mg g-1, 22.9 mg g-1 and 14.9 mg g-1 for dopamine, catechol and adenosine, respectively) in spite of removal of the boronate sites on the external surface of adsorbent. The adsorption specific of adsorbent towards cis-diols was assessed by dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) method, and the results show that the adsorbent can selectively extract small cis-diols in the biosamples while exclude proteins completely. Under the optimal d-SPE, the nucleosides and cis-diol drugs in human serum were successfully analyzed by coupling d-SPE with high-performance liquid chromatography. Where, the detection limits are between 6.1 and 13.4 ng mL-1 for four nucleosides, and 24.9 and 34.3 ng mL-1 for two cis-diol drugs; the relative recoveries of all the analytes vary from 84.1% to 110.1% (RSDs <13.4%, n = 6). The results indicate that the adsorbent can directly treat the real biosamples without the necessary protein precipitation steps in advance, thus simplifying the analysis process.

Abstract
Some diseases can cause abnormal concentrations of catecholamines (CAs), nucleosides (NSs) and nucleotides (NTs) in patients. Previous studies normally focused on the detection of the three types of substances separately. In this work, a bifunctional boronate and titanium (Ⅳ) ion affinity magnetic adsorbent with high-capacity was prepared. The adsorbent can simultaneously enrich CAs, NSs and NTs in a single extraction process, and the adsorbed analytes can be sequentially eluted by 1.0% trifluoroacetic acid and 20.0 mmol L-1 Na3PO4. An analytical method of the analytes has been established by coupling the adsorbent with RP-HPLC. The method has low detection limits (0.039-0.708 ng mL-1) and good reproducibility (inter- and intra-day of assay RSDs less than 15.0%). Serum sample from healthy volunteer was successfully quantified for two CAs, four NSs and five NTs. Compared with the reported methods, the proposed method is simpler to operate, consume less samples, and has enough accurate and sensitivity to obtain comprehensive information on the concentrations of analytes in a single extraction process.

Abstract
Chitosan is a considerably versatile and promising biomaterial and can easily form a 3D hierarchical porous scaffold. In this work, a novel boronate-affinity monolithic column modified with a boronic acid-chitosan complex was prepared and characterized by different methods such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, specific surface area analysis and pore size distribution analysis. The synthesized monolithic column was used for polymer monolithic microextraction combined with high performance liquid chromatography for the simultaneous determination of cytidine, uridine, inosine, and guanosine in milk powder samples. Several parameters affecting extraction efficiency, including the eluent proportion, eluent flow rate, sample flow rate, sample volume, and sample pH were investigated. The boronate-affinity monolithic column showed high enrichment ability due to the selective formation of cyclic borate esters between nucleosides and boronic acid groups at high pH and the release of cyclic borates at low pH values. Under the optimum operating conditions, the linear range was 0.1-50 μg mL-1, and the correlation coefficients were in the range of 0.9993-0.9994. The LOD and LOQ were in the range of 0.0027-0.0034 and 0.0090-0.011 μg mL-1, respectively. In addition, the results of recovery and relative standard deviation were satisfactory.

Abstract
Adenosine is an important molecule in the human body because it participates various biochemical processes, signalling in the physiological processes, and neurological disorders. In the current study, the surface imprinting method was used to prepare adenosine-imprinted magnetic core-shell polyvinylbutyral microbeads. These microbeads were utilized for quantification of adenosine in aqueous solution and control plasma in the range of 1-200 µM. The limit of detection was found to be 1.9 nM, which is quite sensitive compared with to some earlier studies. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and a Zetasizer (particle size analyzer) were used for characterization of the prepared imprinted microbeads. To determine the efficiency of this method, selectivity experiments were conducted with adenosine-imprinted and non-imprinted magnetic core-shell polyvinylbutyral microbeads and with the competitive nucleosides cytidine, uridine, guanosine, and thymidine. Thermodynamic and kinetic studies were performed to assess adsorption of adenosine onto the adenosine-imprinted magnetic core-shell polyvinylbutyral microbeads from adenosine solution. The efficiency was linked to the specific surface reactivity, polarity and porosity of the imprinted microbeads.

Abstract
Macroscopic monoliths are highly desirable in many fields of application. Herein, well organized organic-inorganic cryogel composite with a three-dimensional hierarchical meso- and macroporous structure are presented, which were produced by in situ copolymerization of mesoporous multifunctional silica (size: 1-20 μm; pore: 2-20 nm mostly) and monomers (hydroxyethyl methacrylate and diallyldimethylammonium chloride) in water below the freezing point. This copolymerization method effectively adjusted the macropores of the basic cryogel, and the nanosilica was more homogeneously dispersed in the basic cryogel. The specific surface area of the cryogel composite was increased 17 times versus than that of the basic cryogel. The abundant meso- and macroporous pores on the cryogel composite provided sufficient reactive sites favorable for the efficient mass transport of target compounds. When the cryogel composite, as solid phase extraction adsorbent, was coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography, an analytical tool, the nucleosides were quantified with good selectivity, lower detection limits (0.9-1.3 ng/mL) and satisfactory recoveries of greater than 80% from spiked human serum.

Abstract
This review describes the recent developments in sample extraction and preparation techniques for mass spectrometric analysis of nucleotides, nucleosides, and proteins. Unique materials and techniques have been developed for highly selective extraction of nucleotides and nucleosides by solid-phase extraction strategies using various affinities. However, for proteins, the analysis of small-scale sections of diseased tissues (formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues) and the direct analysis of an exact lesion on the surface of diseased tissues (liquid extraction surface analysis) have become important advances in this field. In this review, we focus on the latest developments of these techniques and strategies.

Abstract
Urinary nucleosides and deoxynucleosides are mainly known as metabolites of RNA turnover and oxidative damage of DNA. For several decades these metabolites have been examined for their potential use in disease states including cancer and oxidative stress. Subsequent improvements in analytical sensitivity and specificity have provided a reliable means to measure these unique molecules to better assess their relationship to physiologic and pathophysiologic conditions. In fact, some are currently used as antiviral and antitumor agents. In this review we provide insight into their molecular characteristics, highlight current separation techniques and detection methods, and explore potential clinical usefulness.
