Synthesis of carbon dots-based covalent organic nanomaterial as stationary phase for open tubular capillary electrochromatography

The transformation of zero-dimensional carbon dots (CDs) to cross-linked nanomaterials is rare. In this work, a novel carbon dots-based covalent organic nanomaterial (CON CDs-TAPB) consisted of 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)-benzene (TAPB) and carbon dots (CDs) through facile Schiff-base reaction was synthesized and then employed as a stationary phase for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). The CON CDs-TAPB and the CDs-TAPB coated column were characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-spectra experiments and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Thanks to CON CDs-TAPB unique structure and abundant accessibility and interaction sites, the prepared column exhibited a satisfactory separation ability towards analytes including parabens, phenolic compounds. Among all analytes, the highest column efficiency was over 1.6 × 10⁵ plates·m^-1. In addition, affording methylbenzene loading capacity of 156.9 pmole, surpassing most of those materials-based OT-CEC reported thus far. Thus, the prepared carbon dots-based covalent organic nanomaterial (CON CDs-TAPB) gave a potential as a stationary phase in the separation science.

Effective removal of Pb(II) ions using piperazine-modified magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite; optimization by response surface methodology

In this research, the piperazine-modified magnetic graphene oxide (Pip@MGO) nanocomposite was synthesized and utilized as a nano-adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) ions from environmental water and wastewater samples. The physicochemical properties of Pip@MGO nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), Vibrating Sample Magnetometery (VSM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis. In this method, the batch removal process were designed by response surface methodology (RSM) based on a central composite design (CCD) model. The results indicated that the highest efficiency of Pb(II) removal was obtained from the quadratic model under optimum conditions of prominent parameters (initial pH 6.0, adsorbent dosage 7 mg, initial concentration of lead 15 mg L⁻¹ and contact time 27.5 min). Adsorption data showed that lead ions uptake on Pip@MGO nanocomposite followed the Langmuir isotherm model equation and pseudo-second order kinetic model. High adsorption capacity (558.2 mg g⁻¹) and easy magnetic separation capability showed that the synthesized Pip@MGO nanocomposite has great potential for the removal of Pb(II) ions from contaminated wastewaters.

Magnetic nanobiosorbent (MG-Chi/Fe3 O4 ) for dispersive solid-phase extraction of Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II) followed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry determination

Trace amounts of Cu (II), Pb (II), and Cd (II) in a wastewater sample were preconcentrated with a novel cross‐linked magnetic chitosan modified with a new synthesised methionine‐glutaraldehyde Schiff's base (MG‐Chi/Fe₃O₄) as a dispersive solid‐phase extraction (DSPE) adsorbent. The adsorbed metal ions were then eluted with a specific volume of suitable solution and determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Various parameters affecting the extraction efficiency of the metal ions were investigated and optimised, including pH, amount of adsorbent, extraction time, type and volume rate of eluent, elution time, sample volume, and effect of interfering ions. The adsorption kinetics are more consistent with the pseudo‐second order model. The results were statistically interpreted and the analytical performance of the proposed method was found to have preconcentration factors of 55, 60, and 50 μg L⁻¹ for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II), respectively, limits of detection were 0.22, 0.24, and 0.10 μg L⁻¹ for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II), respectively, with a relative standard deviation (1.5%‐2.8 %), and the liner range was 5–1000 for Cu(II) and Pb(II) and 2.5–1000 for Cd(II). It was concluded that this method was suitable for successful simultaneous determination of Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II) in industrial wastewater samples.

Fabrication of cefotaxime sodium-functionalized gold nanoclusters for the detection of copper ions in Chinese herbal medicines

Antibiotic-based gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are a good sensing platform for specific recognition; however, the related studies are few. Herein, a simple and facile strategy was proposed for the fabrication of bright blue fluorescent AuNCs through the degradation product (DCTX) of cefotaxime sodium that induced the reduction of HAuCl₄. Various analytical techniques were applied to characterize the prepared AuNCs@DCTX. AuNCs@DCTX exhibited a strong emission peak centered at 420 nm and a quantum yield of 11.8%. Furthermore, an aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching mode endowed the AuNCs@DCTX probe with good specificity and sensitivity for Cu²⁺ detection. The proposed probe had a linear range of 0.01–40 μM, a precision with a relative standard deviation of 1.2% (n = 8), and a detection limit of 8 nM (signal/noise = 3). Interestingly, the probe could be reused through switching the “off” and “on” states by the addition of Cu²⁺ and EDTA. The practicality of the sensing platform was investigated for the determination of Cu²⁺ in four Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs), and the results were in accordance with those obtained by the FAAS method. This study has provided an alternate way for the fabrication of thiolate-protected AuNCs for sensing applications.
