Abstract
Heavy metals constitute pollutants that are particularly common in air, water, and soil. They are present in both urban and rural environments, on land, and in marine ecosystems, where they cause serious environmental problems since they do not degrade easily, remain almost unchanged for long periods, and bioaccumulate. The detection and especially the quantification of metals require a systematic process. Regular monitoring is necessary because of seasonal variations in metal levels. Consequently, there is a significant need for rapid and low-cost metal determination methods. In this study, we compare and analytically validate absorption spectrometry with a sensitive voltammetric method, which uses a bismuth film-plated electrode surface and applies stripping voltammetry. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) represents a well-established analytical technique, while the applicability of anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) in complicated sample matrices such as soil samples is currently unknown. This sample-handling challenge is investigated in the present study. The results show that the AAS and ASV methods were satisfactorily correlated and showed that the metal concentration in soils was lower than the limit values but with an increasing trend. Therefore, continuous monitoring of metal levels in the urban complex of a city is necessary and a matter of great importance. The limits of detection of cadmium (Cd) were lower when using the stripping voltammetry (SWASV) graphite furnace technique compared with those obtained with AAS when using the graphite furnace. However, when using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (flame-AAS), the measurements tended to overestimate the concentration of Cd compared with the values found using SWASV. This highlights the differences in sensitivity and accuracy between these analytical methods for detecting Cd. The SWASV method has the advantage of being cheaper and faster, enabling the simultaneous determination of heavy elements across the range of concentrations that these elements can occur in Mediterranean soils. Additionally, a dsDNA biosensor is suggested for the discrimination of Cu(I) along with Cu(II) based on the oxidation peak of guanine, and adenine residues can be applied in the redox speciation analysis of copper in soil, which represents an issue of great importance.

Abstract
This review paper summarizes the research published in the last five years on using different compounds and/or materials as modifiers for electrodes employed in trace heavy metal analysis. The main groups of modifiers are identified, and their single or combined application on the surface of the electrodes is discussed. Nanomaterials, film-forming substances, and polymers are among the most used compounds employed mainly in the modification of glassy carbon, screen-printed, and carbon paste electrodes. Composites composed of several compounds and/or materials have also found growing interest in the development of modified electrodes. Environmentally friendly substances and natural products (mainly biopolymers and plant extracts) have continued to be included in the modification of electrodes for trace heavy metal analysis. The main analytical performance parameters of the modified electrodes as well as possible interferences affecting the determination of the target analytes, are discussed. Finally, a critical evaluation of the main findings from these studies and an outlook discussing possible improvements in this area of research are presented.

Abstract
The operation stability of halide perovskite devices is the critical issue that impedes their commercialization. The main reasons are that the ambient H2 O molecules can easily deteriorate the perovskites, while the metal electrodes react in different degrees with the perovskites. Herein, one kind of new electrode, the metalloids, is reported, which are much more stable than the conventional noble metals as electrical contacts for halide perovskites. The degradation mechanism of halide perovskites with noble metal electrodes is carefully studied and compared with the metalloid electrodes. It is found that the iodide ions can easily halogenate Cu and Ag in halide perovskites. Although Au is almost not halogenated, it can also decompose the perovskite film. On the contrary, after long-term storage, the metalloid electrodes remain intact on the perovskite film without any degradation. In addition, the long-time operation stability of the perovskite devices with metalloid electrodes is much higher than that of noble metals. First-principles calculations confirm the exceptional stability of the metalloid electrodes. This work explores the ultra-stable electrodes for halide perovskites, paving the way to the large-scale deployment of perovskite-based electronic devices.

Abstract
A colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent dual-mode assay is constructed for sensitive and specific Hg2+ sensing based on UiO-66-NH2 and Au composite (UiO-66-NH2@Au). The addition of Hg2+ stimulates the peroxidase-like activity of UiO-66-NH2@Au by the formation of Au-Hg amalgam, promoting the oxidizing of chromogenic substrate OPD to DAP with the aid of H2O2, which lead to the change of colorimetric and fluorescent signals. The absorbance of the sensing system at 450 nm is linear positive correlation with Hg2+ concentration of 30-1400 nM and the color of the solution under visible light shaded from light yellow to dark yellow. With the increase of Hg2+ concentration, the fluorescence signal at 570 nm (DAP) increased whereas that at 455 nm (intrinsic fluorescence of UiO-66-NH2) decreased due to inner filter effect (IFE), the fluorescence intensity ratio (F455/F570) decreasing linearly with Log [Hg2+] over the range 60-1700 nM; the fluorescence emission of sensing system under UV excitation changed from blue to yellow, which can easily be discerned visually. This assay was successfully applied to the determination of Hg2+ in tap water and river water. The results indicate that the colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent dual-mode assay based on UiO-66-NH2@Au realized visual determination of Hg2+ rapidly and reliably, revealed application prospect in Hg2+ monitoring.

Abstract
Heavy metal ions are one of the main sources of water pollution. Most heavy metal ions are carcinogens that pose a threat to both ecological balance and human health. With the increasing demand for heavy metal detection, electrochemical detection is favorable due to its high sensitivity and efficiency. Here, after discussing the pollution sources and toxicities of Hg(ii), Cd(ii), As(iii), Pb(ii), UO2(ii), Tl(i), Cr(vi), Ag(i), and Cu(ii), we review a variety of recent electrochemical methods for detecting heavy metal ions. Compared with traditional methods, electrochemical methods are portable, fast, and cost-effective, and they can be adapted to various on-site inspection sites. Our review shows that the electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions is a very promising strategy that has attracted widespread attention and can be applied in agriculture, life science, clinical diagnosis, and analysis.

Abstract
This work describes a novel electrochemical sensor fabricated by an injection molding process. This device features a conductive polymer electrode encased in a plastic holder and electroplated in situ with a thin antimony film. The antimony film sensor was applied to the determination of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). The deposition of Sb on the sensor was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and microscopy. The experimental variables (concentration of the antimony plating solution, deposition potential and time, stripping waveform) were investigated, and the potential interferences were studied and addressed. The limits of detection were 0.95 μg L-1 for Pb(II) and 1.3 for Cd(II) (at 240 s of preconcentration) and the within-sensor percentage relative standard deviations were 4.2% and 4.9%, respectively, at the 25 μg L-1 level (n = 8). Finally, the sensor was applied to the determination of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in a phosphorite sample and a lake water sample.

Abstract
Ratiometric electrochemical sensors can provide a relatively accurate analysis of target analytes due to their self-calibration function. Herein, we report a simple ratiometric strategy for achieving the electrochemical detection of Cd(ii), Hg(ii), Pb(ii) and Zn(ii), as well as multiple cancer biomarkers by using metal sulfide nanoparticles as signal tags. A conductive polymer film of poly(2-amino terephthalic acid) (ATA) was electrochemically produced on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and doped with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA). Using Bi(iii) as an enhancer and internal reference in anodic stripping voltammetry, the MSA-CNT-ATA/GCE exhibited sensitive and distinguishable voltammetric responses to Cd(ii), Hg(ii), Pb(ii) and Zn(ii), with detection limits of 0.13, 0.49, 0.16 and 0.089 μg L-1, respectively. By using CdS, HgS, PbS and ZnS labeled secondary antibodies as the signal tags, alpha-fetoprotein, carbohydrate antigen 19-9, carbohydrate antigen 125, and carcinoembryonic antigen were determined simultaneously according to the amounts of metal sulfide in the sandwich-type complexes, with detection limits of 0.11 pg mL-1, 0.68 mU mL-1, 1.4 mU mL-1 and 0.23 pg mL-1, respectively. This ratiometric approach has a wide scope in the electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions as well as immunoassays with metal ions serving as signal tags.

Abstract
In this work, we explore the protection with Nafion of commercial sputtered-bismuth screen-printed electrodes (BiSPSPEs), to improve its ability for on-site determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions in ambient water samples. The modified screen-printed platform was coupled with a miniaturized cell, in combination with a battery-operated stirring system and a portable potentiostat operated by a laptop for decentralized electrochemical measurements using Square-Wave Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (SWASV). We also describe a detailed electrode surface characterization by microscopy and surface analysis techniques, before and after the modification with Nafion, to get insight about modification effect on signal size and stability. Optimization of the chemical composition of the medium including the optimization of pH, and instrumental parameters, resulted in a method with detection limits in the low ng/mL range (3.62 and 3.83 ng·mL−1 for Cd and Pb respectively). Our results show an improvement of the sensitivity and stability for Nafion-protected BiSPSPEs in pH = 4.4 medium, and similar or lower detection limits than comparable methods on commercial BiSPSPEs. The values obtained for Pb(II) and Cd(II) in natural water samples agreed well with those obtained by the much more costly Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, ICP-MS, technique as a reference method (recoveries from 75% to 111%).

Abstract
In order to achieve rapid on-site screening and solve the problem of rapid pretreatment for the determination of lead (Pb2+) and cadmium (Cd2+) in cereals by a portable electrochemical analyzer with disposable screen-printed electrodes (SPEs), a new reliable and simple extraction method for Pb2+ and Cd2+ in cereals was developed. The Pb2+ and Cd2+ in cereals were purified by a mixed solution of 1 mol L−1 potassium iodide (KI)/5% vitamin C (VC)/ethyl acetate after being extracted by 10% HNO3, which transfers the Pb2+ and Cd2+ into ethyl acetate after a reaction with KI–VC. Then, the Pb2+ and Cd2+ were eluted from ethyl acetate with 5% HNO3 and were determined by an electrochemical analyzer with screen printed electrodes. Under the optimized conditions, the matrix calibration curves of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in rice and wheat showed good linear relationships with R2 > 0.996. The method shows a detection limit (LOD) for Cd2+ in rice and wheat of 6.7 μg kg−1 and 11.5 μg kg−1, and the corresponding values for Pb2+ were 34.9 and 31.1 μg kg−1, respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was less than 8.7% for Cd2+ and Pb2+. In addition, the recoveries of the tested reference materials using this method were between 80% and 120%. From sample pretreatment to testing results, the whole process took no more than 25 min, and the operation was simple for operators, green to the environment, cheap in terms of instruments, and above all suitable for on-site detection. The results implied that this portable electrochemical method with new pretreatment may be a good choice for screening Pb2+ and Cd2+ in cereal samples on-site. To achieve rapid on-site screening rapid pretreatment for the determination of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in cereals by a portable electrochemical analyzer with disposable screen-printed electrodes, a new reliable and simple extraction method for Pb2+ and Cd2+ was developed.![]()

Screen-Printed Electrodes Modified with "Green" Metals for Electrochemical Stripping Analysis of Toxic Elements. SENSORS 2018; 18:s18041032. Abstract
This work reviews the field of screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) modified with “green” metals for electrochemical stripping analysis of toxic elements. Electrochemical stripping analysis has been established as a useful trace analysis technique offering many advantages compared to competing optical techniques. Although mercury has been the preferred electrode material for stripping analysis, the toxicity of mercury and the associated legal requirements in its use and disposal have prompted research towards the development of “green” metals as alternative electrode materials. When combined with the screen-printing technology, such environment-friendly metals can lead to disposable sensors for trace metal analysis with excellent operational characteristics. This review focuses on SPEs modified with Au, Bi, Sb, and Sn for stripping analysis of toxic elements. Different modification approaches (electroplating, bulk modification, use of metal precursors, microengineering techniques) are considered and representative applications are described. A developing related field, namely biosensing based on stripping analysis of metallic nanoprobe labels, is also briefly mentioned.
