Quality Monitoring of Biodiesel and Diesel/Biodiesel Blends: A Comparison between Benchtop FT-NIR versus a Portable Miniaturized NIR Spectroscopic Analysis

A methodology such as near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, which enables in situ and in real-time analysis, is crucial to perform quality control of biodiesel, since it is blended into diesel fuel and the presence of contaminants can hinder its performance. This work aimed to compare the performance of a benchtop Fourier Transform (FT) NIR spectrometer with a prototype of a portable, miniaturized near-infrared spectrometer (miniNIR) to detect and quantify contaminants in biodiesel and biodiesel in diesel. In general, good models based on principal component analysis-linear discriminant analysis (PCA-LDA) of FT-NIR spectra were obtained, predicting with high accuracies biodiesel contaminants and biodiesel in diesel (between 75% to 95%), as well as good partial least square (PLS) regression models to predict contaminants concentration in biodiesel and biodiesel concentration in diesel/biodiesel blends, with high coefficients of determination (between 0.83 and 0.99) and low prediction errors. The miniNIR prototype’s PCA-LDA models enabled the prediction of target contaminants with good accuracies (between 66% and 86%), and a PLS model enabled the prediction of biodiesel concentration in diesel with a reasonable coefficient of determination (0.68), pointing to the device’s potential for preliminary analysis of biodiesel which, associated with its potential low cost and portability, could increase biodiesel quality control.

Uncovering four domains of energy management in palm oil production: a sustainable bioenergy production trend

This study aims to identify current and future research trends in sustainable bioenergy production. The systematic review is conducted using a social network analysis method. The data were collected from the Web of Science and Scopus database (2010-2021). Out of the 1747 articles reviewed, 100 were found to be relevant for thematic analysis. The results uncovered four domains of palm oil biodiesel production for sustainable energy management: (1) renewable energy, (2) biodiesel, (3) bioenergy, and (4) life cycle assessment. This study has proposed a sustainable bioenergy production framework based on the four main domains. The framework sheds light on the future of sustainable bioenergy production. The findings indicate the potential growth of the research topic, including sustainable bioenergy, palm oil biodiesel, energy management, and carbon emissions reduction. Future research must incorporate the energy management framework to design a sustainable energy management ecosystem strategy. In addition, the industry must comply with the international sustainability standard and sustainable development goals to manage the energy supply chain and consistency of palm oil biodiesel production.

Mammary microbial dysbiosis leads to the zoonosis of bovine mastitis: a One-Health perspective

Bovine mastitis is a prototypic emerging and reemerging bacterial disease that results in cut-by-cut torture to animals, public health and the global economy. Pathogenic microbes causing mastitis have overcome a series of hierarchical barriers resulting in the zoonotic transmission from bovines to humans either by proximity or remotely through milk and meat. The disease control is challenging and has been attributed to faulty surveillance systems to monitor their emergence at the human-animal interface. The complex interaction between the pathogens, the hidden pathobionts and commensals of the bovine mammary gland that create a menace during mastitis remains unexplored. Here, we review the zoonotic potential of these pathogens with a primary focus on understanding the interplay between the host immunity, mammary ecology and the shift from symbiosis to dysbiosis. We also address the pros and cons of the current management strategies and the extent of the success in implementing the One-Health approach to keep these pathogens at bay.

Determination of biodiesel and used cooking oil in automotive diesel/green diesel fuels through high-performance liquid chromatography

This study reports a simple and convenient analytical method for the simultaneous determination of biodiesel and vegetable oils or used cooking oils in petrodiesel and green diesel (hydrotreated vegetable oils or paraffinic diesel). The approach is based on normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with refractive index detection. It employed silica stationary phase, n-hexane mobile phase with isopropanol modifier to achieve optimum separation between hydrocarbons (petrodiesel or green diesel), fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel) and triglycerides (vegetable oils and used cooking oil). In addition to determining vegetable oils or used cooking oils as adulterants in diesel, this method is also proposed as a better alternative to the standard method ASTM D7371, which is currently recommended for determining fatty acid methyl esters in petrodiesel. The method development involved screening of various stationary and mobile phases, with and without modifiers, to achieve acceptable chromatographic resolutions between analytes. Under the optimized method conditions, silica column, and n-hexane containing 0.6% isopropanol as the mobile phase provided the best results. The real-world scenario was simulated for the method validation carried out by fortifying Jatropha seed oil, soybean oil, and used cooking oil in the biodiesel blended petrodiesel and green diesel. Measurement of all analytes was accompanied by high precision, low limit of detection/quantification and linear response range of 0.05 to 50% for biodiesel, and 0.05 to 30% for vegetable oils. The proposed method is simple, fast (runtime 7 min), and does not require sample pre-treatment and backflushing.

Lanthanum Exchanged Keggin Structured Heteropoly Compounds for Biodiesel Production

La-exchanged 12-tungstophosphoric acid (LaxTPA) and 12-molybdophosphoric acid (LaxMPA) salts (x = 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00) were prepared via an ion exchange method. The physico-chemical characteristics of the materials were analyzed by using elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2-physical adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and acidity-basicity measurements. The results indicated that La was introduced into the secondary structure of heteropolyacid (HPA) and have not influenced the primary structure, which effectively improved the surface area and pore size. Acidity-basicity studies indicated that incorporation of La resulted in a decrease in the number of acid sites and an increase in the number of basic sites. The catalytic activity of samples was studied in transesterification of glyceryl tributyrate with methanol and LaxTPA samples which exhibited high activity compared to LaxMPA samples due to having more active basic sites and a larger surface area. Calcined LaxTPA samples showed excellent stability, outstanding recyclability, and high activity for one pot transesterification and esterification processes. This outcome was attributed to the presence of balanced acidic and basic sites.

Performance analysis of IC engine with ceramic-coated piston

Experimental investigation about the ceramic coating on diesel engine components is to evaluate its effective efficiency with respect to different loads. It is conducted on the Kirloskar single cylinder diesel engine; in addition, the engine performance, emission, and combustion have been analyzed by treating with the coated piston on the engine runs with diesel (D100) and biodiesel (B100). Yttria-stabilized zirconia is the ceramic agent coated on the piston with the help of plasma spray coating method. After the experimental results based on the comparison of coated and uncoated piston, it shows that the coated piston performed very effectively with increased brake thermal efficiency, decreased specific fuel consumption at all applied spectrum of loads. The emission is also evaluated with special equipment for testing and it shows that the hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide are some major pollutants tend to reduce in the coated piston than the uncoated piston. But there is an increase in nitrogen monoxide where it is controlled by varying injection timing and pressure with advanced fuel injectors according to the survey. Other benefits of this thermal barrier coating are that thermal fatigue faced by the surface of the components can be reduced to a greater level. The combustion has high heat release rate and pressure due to the complete heat within the insulated chamber without any conduction through the surface of the surrounded components.

A review on the engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics of diesel engines fueled with biodiesel blends

Biodiesels have gained much popularity because they are cleaner alternative fuels and they can be used directly in diesel engines without modifications. In this paper, a brief review of the key studies pertaining to the engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics of diesel engines fueled with biodiesel blends, exhaust aftertreatment systems, and low-temperature combustion technology is presented. In general, most biodiesel blends result in a significant decrease in carbon monoxide and total unburned hydrocarbon emissions. There is also a decrease in carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and total unburned hydrocarbon emissions while the engine performance increases for diesel engines fueled with biodiesels blended with nano-additives. The development of automotive technologies, such as exhaust gas recirculation systems and low-temperature combustion technology, also improves the thermal efficiency of diesel engines and reduces nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions.
