Environmentally friendly microwave-assisted sequential extraction method followed by ICP-OES and ion-chromatographic analysis for rapid determination of sulphur forms in coal samples

Procedures from samples to sulfur isotopic data: A review

RATIONALE

Sulfur isotopes have been widely used to solve some key scientific questions, especially in the last two decades with advanced instruments and analytical schemes. Different sulfur speciation and multiple isotopes analyzed in laboratories worldwide and in situ microanalysis have also been reported in many articles. However, methods of sampling to measurements are multifarious, and occasionally some inaccuracies are present in published papers. Vague methods may mislead newcomers to the field, puzzle readers, or lead to incorrect data-based correlations.

METHODS

We have reviewed multiple methods on sulfur isotopic analyses from the perspectives of sampling, laboratory work, and instrumental analysis in order to help reduce operational inhomogeneity and ensure the fidelity of sulfur isotopic data. We do not deem our proposed solutions as the ultimate standard methods but as a lead-in to the overall introduction and summary of the current methods used.

RESULTS

It has been shown that external contamination and transformation of different sulfur species should be avoided during the sampling, pretreatment, storage, and chemical treatment processes. Conversion rates and sulfur isotopic fractionations during sulfur extraction, purification, and conversion processes must be verified by researchers using standard or known samples. The unification of absence of isotopic fractionation is needed during all steps, and long-term monitoring of standard samples is recommended.

CONCLUSION

This review compiles more details on different methods in sampling, laboratory operation, and measurement of sulfur isotopes, which is beneficial for researchers' better practice in laboratories. Microanalyses and molecular studies are the frontier techniques that compare the bulk sample with the elemental analysis/continuous flow-gas source stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry method, but the latter is widely used. The development of sulfur isotopic measurements will lead to the innovation in scientific issues with sulfur proxies.

Anthocyanin Extraction from Jaboticaba Skin (Myrciaria cauliflora Berg.) Using Conventional and Non-Conventional Methods

This study evaluated the effect of different extraction technologies and conditions in order to obtain jaboticaba skin extracts. Firstly, the skins were extracted by conventional extraction, according to a rotatable central composite design, varying ethanol concentration, solid:liquid ratio, and temperature. Next, ultrasound-assisted extraction was performed using different power densities and times. Finally, high-pressure extractions were performed with varying pressures and times. For agitated bed extraction, the highest anthocyanin content was observed for ethanol concentrations varying between 60% and 80%. Thus, the independent variables which more influenced anthocyanin content were ethanol concentration and solid:liquid ratio. Folin–Ciocalteu reducing capacity was linearly affected by the increase in temperature. Ethanol concentration was the variable that most influenced ABTS+. On the other hand, the increase in ethanol concentration decreased the antioxidant capacity by ABTS+. Considering the ultrasound extraction, increasing its power did not affect total monomeric anthocyanins content, while the increase in process time had better yields. The highest antioxidant capacity and total monomeric anthocyanins were found for the highest extraction time. Similarly, with ultrasound, the increase in high hydrostatic-assisted extraction time positively influenced anthocyanin content and antioxidant capacity. As a result, the ultrasound-assisted method was found to be the best extraction technology for anthocyanins recovery.

An improved microwave assisted sequential extraction method followed by spectrometric analysis for metal distribution determination in South African coal samples

Some metal pollutants are corrosive in nature, are associated with fouling and slagging challenges of the coal boilers, are highly volatile and might cause air pollution and are catalyst poisoners during Fischer–Tropsch catalytic reaction. Therefore, this work describes an improved microwave-assisted sequential extraction (MW-ASE) method followed by ICP-OES/MS analysis for metal distribution determination in South African coal samples. The multivariate optimum conditions for each sequential step were 0.1 g, 200 °C and 5 min for sample amount, microwave temperature and extraction time, respectively. Under the optimum conditions, Ga, Sr and Ba were the only metals that showed solubility towards water, therefore, these metals are classified as highly mobile and eco-toxic under wet environmental conditions. Additionally, all the investigated metals showed solubility towards acidic conditions (HCl and HNO₃). These results suggest that, most metal ions are predominantly bonded to sulphate, sulphide, and carbonate coal minerals. Alternatively, Ce, Cr and Y showed total extraction recoveries of ≤ 90%, confirming their strong affinity towards quartz coal minerals. In overall, the proposed MW-ASE method reported short extraction time (0.34 h), environmentally friendly reagents (H₂O and diluted H₂O₂) and rapid multivariate optimization with acceptable extraction efficiencies (79–98%) and reproducibility (RSD ≤ 5%).

Microwave-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction coupling to solidification of floating organic droplet for colorants analysis in selected cosmetics by liquid chromatography

A convenient and rapid method was developed for determination of fourteen colorants in selected cosmetics based on microwave-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (MA-DLLME) using solidification of the floating organic droplet (SFOD) as a clean-up step followed by high-performance liquid chromatography diode array detection (HPLC-DAD). DLLME was performed in a microwave device for reducing manual operations and facilitating rapid extraction equilibrium, resulting in high sample throughput and good extraction efficiency. Matrix effects could be effectively eliminated by SFOD technique. Various parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were optimized by multi-response surface methodology. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.25-3.2 mg kg^-1 and 0.85-11.0 mg kg^-1, respectively. The recoveries ranged from 90.2% to 106.1% with relative standard deviations of 0.30-3.1%. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of cosmetics, in which all the colorants could be quantified, and their median values ranged from 4.94 to 591 mg kg^-1 for seventy-two lipsticks, and from 7.70 to 1.73 × 10³ mg kg^-1 for fifty eye shadows, respectively. The proposed protocol could achieve batch preparation of samples and avoid measurement errors from the obvious volume reduction of the recovered extract, and it could serve as a powerful tool for high-throughput analysis of multiple colorants in complex samples.
